5 WTVP 47.1 HD WTVP 47.1 HD WTVP 47.1 HD Notes from the President & CEO Celebrating independent points of view Telling the unique stories of diverse races and cultures is just one of the places where public media excels. We reflect this truth every month of the year, though it emerges even more clearly during February s Black History Month. After all, no other media entity brings you programs that explore the gamut of the African American experience from the insight of award-winning performers and writers to a landmark study of race and inequality, to the power of photography in sharing a collective history. Two of these programs (Through a Lens Darkly and American Denial) are from, produced by Independent Television Service (ITVS), one of our most important media partners. I had the privilege of serving on the ITVS board of directors for eight years; it was incredibly gratifying to play a part in bringing the perspectives of independent filmmakers to public television viewers. Thank you for your interest in all that ways that public media and the WTVP stations enhance the quality of life across central Illinois. Moss Bresnahan, President & CEO WTVP P.S. 8 8 WTVP 47.1 HD WTVP 47.1 HD WTVP 47.1 HD The Italian Americans Unlike other immigrant groups, many Italians did not come to America to stay. At the turn of the 20th century, most came to work, earn money to support their families, and eventually return home. For those that made America home, their struggle to maintain a distinct Italian culture was guided by remarkably powerful ideals of family that had always been at the center of their lives. In the Italian family, the needs of the collective came before the individual a value system often at odds with American ideals of freedom and personal choice. While the power of the Italian family became a source of strength, it also bred suspicion, popularized in popular media as a dark, criminal element. This clash of culture echoed through generations of Italian Americans and, as they entered positions of political, social and cultural influence, it has left its mark on the American landscape. The Italian Americans, a new two-part, four-hour documentary series airing Tuesday, Feb. 17 & 24 from 8-10 p.m., explores the unique and distinctive qualities of one immigrant group s experience, and how these qualities, over time, have shaped and challenged America. Through extensive archival materials and interviews with scholars and notable Italian Americans such as Tony Bennett, Dion DiMucci, David Chase, Gay Talese, John Turturro and narrator Stanley Tucci the series strips away the stereotypes about Italian Americans to reveal a complicated and rich narrative, little understood by most Americans. 22 WTVP WTVP WTVP WTVP WTVP WTVP WTVP Thank you for helping us start 2015 off right! WTVP is very grateful to everyone who pledged during the December membership drive and who answered the call for year-end contributions. Thanks to you, we have strong expectations for this new year. A special thank you to our volunteers throughout The gift of your time is appreciated and, we hope, makes you feel more connected to what we do. Here s to 2015 a year of great programming and prosperity for all! Best-selling author Jessica Fellowes, left, with Jerry and Laura Kolb. Fellowes, the niece of Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, was WTVP s special guest at one of the station s many Downton Abbey-themed events. She is the author of three Downton Abbey books. The comedian Gallagher (yes, the guy who smashed watermelons) used to tell a joke about how it would be nice to be able to turn up the intelligence on your television. But the truth is that while we seem to have ever more channel choices, it is becoming ever harder to find programming that allows us to turn up the intelligence. But the one place that maintains that commitment is public television and in our community, that is WTVP. While offering a wide array of programming, the commitment to quality never waivers. From the to, Downton Abbey to Red Green, NOVA to Sesame Street, WTVP brings the world into our homes and raises our intelligence. As we know that member support is a critical piece of WTVP s funding, we are proud to support WTVP as sustaining Klystron members. Being a sustaining member couldn t be easier, as your contribution will automatically be debited from your account on a monthly basis. So won t you consider joining us to ensure the future of intelligent programming for our community? Jerry & Laura Kolb Join the Kolbs as sustaining major donors by calling WTVP at (309) or visiting wtvp.org. WTVP Endowment Fund Thank you to those who are generously helping WTVP save for a rainy day. The station s Endowment Fund continues to thrive thanks to the following caring individuals, listed below. WTVP would also like to give our enduring gratitude to the local family, who asks to remain anonymous, who matches the first $10,000 raised each year for our Endowment Fund. This family started WTVP s Endowment Fund 30 years ago, and their foresight has helped the station through good times and bad. Though the station solicits for our Endowment Fund just once a year, donations are welcome throughout the year. You can specify an additional gift when you renew your membership or visit our website at wtvp.org anytime to make a gift. Thank you.
