1 PRESS RELEASE DECEMBER 30 th 2013 THE MODEL UNIT MINIATURE EFFECTS FOR THE TIME OF THE DOCTOR Following our work on the 50 th Anniversary show, producer Marcus Wilson engaged the Model Unit again to provide miniature sequences for the Christmas Doctor Who episode The Time of the Doctor. As with the Anniversary story, the miniature effects were primarily concerned with a battle sequence; this time at the climax of the story, when the Daleks invade the planet of Trenzalore to confront the regenerating Doctor. Working from detailed art department drawings and photographs, the Model Unit recreated a building from the Sennybridge army camp location as a modular 1/6 th scale miniature with a selection of walls and roof sections, allowing one model to represent several different buildings. Windows and doorways were made replaceable for multiple pyro events, and brickwork cut away to show more damage to the building than would be possible on the full size versions. Numerous pieces of 1/6 th scale rustic dressing were also constructed to ensure an exact match to the location and the entire set dusted with artificial snow. Real pine trees and LED Christmas lights completed the miniature set.

As had been done with the 50 th Anniversary episode, the attacking Dalek forces were based around commercially available 18 inch models, although assistance from Alistair Dewar at Character Options meant that this time the models were specifically manufactured from modified moulds, speeding up the conversion process required to match to the full sized props. Careful modification work by Model Unit crew, including interior detail (including the Dalek mutant creatures), blue LEDs set into the eye stalk and radio controlled head motion ensured that the shots achieved using ¼ scale miniatures were virtually indistinguishable from what had been done on location.
