4 Cinderella Ideas for the Classroom IDEAS FOR INTRODUCING THE FILM Choose from the following themes to prepare students for watching the film at ACMI. FAIRYTALES AND STORYTELLING What is meant by the word story? Where do we find stories? What is a fairytale? What are some fairytales you know? What do they have in common? What are the opening and closing lines used in a fairytale? ACTIVITY: What are some examples of fairytales? List and discuss different fairytales as a class. What happens in those narratives? What do they have in common? Where did the students read or watch them? FAIRYTALE CHARACTERS What are some common characters from fairytales? Ask students to draw a good or bad character from their favourite fairytale. Students can present their work to the class. o What details make the character good or bad? Think about colours, clothing, and facial expressions. MAGIC Fairytales always feature an element of magic. How is magic used in the fairytales you have spoken about in class? If students could have a magic power what would it be and why?

5 AFTER WATCHING THE FILM: IDEAS FOR EXPLORING CINDERELLA RESPONSE TO THE FILM Which aspects of the film stand out? How did the story make you feel? Did it make you happy, laugh, angry, upset or sad? Why? What did students think about the ending? What was the message of the film? FAIRYTALES AND STORYTELLING What problems does Cinderella face? How does she try to solve them? ACTIVITY: Fairytales are usually organised into three sections, the beginning, middle and end. Beginning Middle End Main character or characters are introduced at the beginning of the story. Who are these characters in Cinderella? Their world is disrupted in some way: there is a complication or a problem. What are some of the problems faced in Cinderella? The story concludes as the problem is solved. In the case of a fairytale, there will be a happily ever after ending. What happens at the end of Cinderella? What parts of Cinderella fit into each of these sections? Discuss as a class and ask students to complete the Fairytales And Storytelling Worksheet at the end of this resource. CHARACTERS Who are the main characters in the Cinderella? What words describe the stepsisters and stepmother?

6 What are some words that describe Cinderella? What types of animals are in this film? Were some animals good and some bad? How did you know? How are the animals in this film like people? What relationships are there between humans and animals in this film? In many fairytales there is a hero who will save the day and an evil character who will try to hurt or ruin the main character s life. Who were the good and bad characters in Cinderella? How did you know which characters were good and which were bad in Cinderella? Was it the way they looked? Their voice? The actions they carried out? ACTIVITY: Print off pictures of the characters from the film. Ask students to group them under the heading of good characters and bad characters. MAGIC Where do we see magic in the film, Cinderella? How does an animated film allow magic to appear normal? Were students surprised that there were talking animals in the story? Why? Why not? How do we know the Fairy Godmother is magical? ACTIVITY: The Fairy Godmother says some funny magic words before she helps Cinderella. Ask students to make their own magic words to perform certain magic. What words would you use to open a locked door, transform an object into an animal or create a beautiful dress?

End: Was the problem resolved? On the back of this page draw a picture showing how the film ended.
