4 4. Rewrite the story below using passive voice (you can change up to 9 sentences). When rewriting, don t use the word they in line 2. The words in parentheses can be skipped when rewriting. Remember to change the verbs from past tense to past participle tense. The Space Shuttle: 5 10 NASA built the first space shuttle in They called it Enterprise. However, Enterprise never went into space. The second shuttle, Columbia, the first to reach space in April, (NASA) launched it from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. 5 5. There is something you have to be very careful about when making passive voice sentences; only transitive verbs can be used. Look at the examples below: The firefighter carried the baby. WhatWho did the firefighter carry? The baby. the baby is the object of the sentence, so the sentence can be rewritten as: The baby carried by the fire fighter. Since carried needs an object (in this case, the baby), it is a transitive verb. Next, let s look at the verb smile : The new worker smiled. WhatWho did the new worker smile? NothingNo one. Since smile doesn t have an object, we cannot say: I smiled by the new worker. 6. Thus, only verbs that have objects (transitive verbs) can be used to make passive voice. To know whether a verb needs an object, ask yourself what or who. If you can answer one of these questions, then that verb is transitive. Write a short story about your school, local library, a temple, or any building or monument in your city. Use the example of the space shuttle on the last page. Make passive voice sentences with and.
