1 !" # $!%%& Inside This Issue: The President speaks The Old Workbench Blues Red Green s Winch for Sailplane Flyers Events Calendar Items for Sale Sadly we report that we seem to have lost our library. Video tapes and CD s have been swirled aloft by dust devils and scattered to the four corners (Duffs, Peters, Clappison and Rykerts) of Wentworth County and beyond. If you happen to come across one of these items, snare it and return to the head keeper (Librarian) who will ensure it is returned to its proper place for all to enjoy. It is hoped that the Library will be expanded to include books and texts of interest and we thank Les Peer for offering to look after things and coax some order out of the chaos. A few words of thanks to Cliff English who steps down this year from the post of Secretary, for his sterling work over the past years. Cliff was able to record the minutes of the meetings, often with true diplomatic style. He ensured that all the paperwork for club registration with MAAC, the sanction requirements for events and documentation was in place so that we could all fly and enjoy ourselves (weather permitting, of course). Thanks again. Cliff, you are now free to fly about the country and even take a few minutes for yourself. Real Flight G4 Some further observations: OK, we have the hardware issue solved. Now, we have to adjust to the simulator itself. Adjusting to the simulator is rather like adjusting to a new flying field getting used to seeing the plane, adjusting the orientation for wind direction and landings and take-offs also there is getting used to the new models that are used and not having to wrestle with a hi-start line under tension. At the moment, the launch process makes some demands on our imagination. However, once we have the plane in flight the simulation is very good indeed and even bad Landings go unrewarded. We just press reset and try again. This is where the unit shines the more you practice, the better you get and slowly but surely the flights improve the turns become smoother, the set up for landings more consistent and even some thermals can be found. There are many parameters that can be changed, from aircraft to flying fields to weather conditions. Try flying with a 20K turbulent cross wind or modify the C of G. There are endless possibilities try something different (as the Actress said to the Bishop) it will challenge your skills and also help to improve them.!%%& ' (
2 The President Speaks: Elections for SOGGI s 2009 Executive Positions Subject to being elected by the membership, the following candidates have offered to serve on SOGGI s Executive during Elections will be held at the December meeting: For President: For Vice President: For Treasurer: For Secretary: For Editor: Bob Hammett Otakar Koprnicky Bob Thayer Peter Clarke Dick Colley I thank the other candidates for their generous offer of service to the club for We must also thank Cliff English who is stepping down this year as club Secretary after many years of faithful service. I have enjoyed serving the club during In 2008 we made progress on building membership, improving our financial tracking, raising field safety awareness and on some other due-diligence and public accountability issues. During 2009 we hope to streamline our business meetings, hold some technical seminars, and continue to build our membership. Good News Already! Our November business meeting set a new speed record (54 minutes gavel-to-gavel)! If our meetings can be kept short, it will leave more time for things that are fun, like Show and Tell, Guest Speakers, Technical sessions, Indoor Contests, and drinking coffee with our friends. Perhaps someone will volunteer to organize a coffee pot for our December meeting. Charge any supplies to the club. Recently you may have noticed the talk in the media about recession or even depression. Well, don t get depressed, get busy. Participation is the best bail out package. Finish building that model airplane. Come out to a club meeting and get a fresh perspective. Lead a club project. Want further simulation? Well, try the club s flight simulator may be the best year you ve ever had. And yes, these ARE the good old days. SOGGI Library SOGGI s entire collection of CD s and video tapes has disappeared. Please take a look to see if you have any of those items. Winter is the time to put them back into circulation amongst the membership. We thank Les Peer for creating the SOGGI Library. The new Library will house our flight simulator, videos, books, drawings and any other materials that our Librarian feels are appropriate. If you have items that you wish to donate to the Library, please contact Les. Be aware that the MAAC archives already contain very complete collections of most model airplane magazines, and there seems little point in attempting to duplicate that public collection. On the other hand, model aircraft drawings, photos, aviation books and scale documentation material would be welcome. Ted Mitchell has already posted recent back issues of the TASK newsletter on our website. (See [News and Events page header]). We thank Stan Shaw for offering to digitize his collection of older TASK issues, which will be posted on the website as soon as the digitized files become available. SOGGI Indoor Contest Members present at the November meeting showed revitalized interest in holding an indoor contest. The contest would occur at our April 2009 meeting. Suggestions included a triathlon one-design event in which contestants would all fly the same model design, and be scored on three separate tasks. Suggestions included duration flights, most loop-the-loops, most circles, and/or hit-thetarget. For those who have been asking for advice on how to trim their R/C model, this would be a good way to learn. ' *!
3 A final selection of three tasks is to be made at the December meeting. At that meeting, we also hope to see several aircraft prototypes unveiled from which a final selection can be made. The successful design drawing will be digitized and published on the website. Flight Simulator SOGGI s new Real Flight G4 model aircraft simulator has been in use during our October and November membership meetings. Those who have tried it have mostly praised its real life accuracy. We intend to continue with these introductory sessions. Each session is a full, productive 20 minutes. An instructor familiar with the simulator is always present leaving you free to concentrate on flying. To date, no one has had to take any aircraft home for repair. If you haven t tried it, give it a whirl. SOGGI thanks Ted Mitchell for the loan of his laptop as simulator platform at the October meeting, and we also thank Joe Fiore for bringing his own simulator and laptop. Christmas Party and our December Meeting We hope to see you at our club Christmas Party which will take place on Saturday December 13 at the Winchester Arms in Dundas. Contact Otakar (ph ) if you are looking for additional details. Thanks Otakar for organizing this event. Please be aware that we will be having our regular business meeting in Rockton the next day (Sunday December 14). Until then, Merry Christmas! Bob Hammett A Christmas thought: STRESSED is just DESSERTS spelled backward. Minutes of Meeting, October at the Rockton Library Bob Hammett called the meeting to order at 2.00 PM. There were 19 members present Bob introduced Andy Misner a new member of the club. Flight simulators were set up in the back room names were drawn for simulator time 20 minutes. This procedure worked out very well, and will be continued at future meetings. Bob said he would like to see a part of the meeting be used to instruct and talk more about the RC aspect of the hobby. 1) Minutes: Minutes of the April meeting were read by Cliff English. Motion to accept minutes as read Dick Colley seconded by Stan Shaw. Motion carried 4) Task & Web Site: Dick Colley asked for articles for the Task. The topic of putting old articles from the Task on the web site was proposed. Jack Linghorne brought in some old QSI magazines with how to articles about soaring and building gliders. Les Peer offered to become the club librarian. Les said he would catalogue the articles and look after the club glider videos. 5) Growing the Club Brochures: Derek Hartwell said we have about 500 brochures left. Brantford Air Show: Bob Hammett talked to officials about the 2009 event. We need a co-coordinator for this event. 6) Safety and Flight Instruction: Jim Laslet and Les Peers were given their wings for completing the wing program. Flight training instructors list to be updated by Dick Colley. Bob mentioned that SOOGI had no accidents in Jack Linghorne said that in the past gliders had priority over other types of aircraft. A flight line must be 40 meters (120 feet) from the parking lot. The frequency board must be placed on the grass even if only one person is flying by themselves. This is a MAAC rule for insurance purposes. With gliders, free flight, electric gliders and electric sport planes it is important for all pilots to come to an understanding about flight lines. A general discussion about noise control at the field was held: 1: Noise restrictions to be enforced. 2: Flying electric jets. 3: No duct fan jets. 4: If some one is flying a noisy electric plane first speak to the pilot. Get another member to speak with the offending pilot. 5: A motion to ban ducted jets from the field was put forth then withdrawn ' *"
5 6: Note: Stu Watson said he was building a ducted fan jet and wanted to know if he could fly it at the field. After the above discussion it was decided that Stu would bring the finished plane to a meeting and start the motor up to see how loud it would be. (To be continued) 7) Events Calendar: Otakar Koprnicky will look into reserving the Winchester Arms in Dundas for the Xmas lunch. Possible date: Dec. Saturday 13 Sunday 14. The executive for 2009 President, Vice President, Treasurer, Editor all said they would continue. The position of secretary will be open for nominations Cliff declined to serve for another year. An indoor contest for the April meeting was discussed. If the weather permits a thermal duration contest could be held at the Beverly Center. 8) New business: The income tax return for 2008 has been filed and the Incorporation yearly report has been filed by Bob Hammett. Nebo road field has been stripped use will depend on sod being planted. Ben Schouten`s field has been seeded this year and could be used in ) Task & Web Site: Older issues of the Task could be digitized. for Les to archive and put on the web site. ' *+
