1 THE FALCON TIMES THE WEEK OF: 20 th November 2017 EXCLUSIVE NEWS RUCK N ROLL On Wednesday 4th of October, John of Gaunt s Y7 Boys Rugby Team played Matravers at home. JOG showed amazing teamwork and skill resulting in a spectacular win of This result was all the more impressive as it was only the second time the team had played together this season. The team are looking forward to playing more matches in the future and continuing their winning streak. Following our recent rugby match against Matravers we decided to interview Mr Mockett, Y7 Boys Rugby Team Coach, to see how he thought it went and what he thinks the rest of the season holds for us. Here is what he had to say: Q. What lessons can be learnt from our match against Matravers? A. The team played as individuals and not as a unit, which is essential. They also need to be more composed around the ruck and hold their defensive positions better. Q. Which players do you believe really stood out in the match? A. From what I saw I think Ben Randell, George Saggars and Charlie Sweetman are showing the most promise at the moment, but it is only early on in the season so things could change. Q. How do you think the team have done so far this season? A. We are currently going from strength to strength and for a lot of players this is their first experience of playing rugby so there is obviously room for improvement, but we are doing ok at the moment. Q. Who do you think will be our hardest opposing team this season? A. Historically it has been St Augustine s, but since seeing how they played us in our first match, I would say Clarendon. The Salvation Project Author Visit On the 30 th October Stewart Ross visited the John of Gaunt School. Every Y7 and Y8 student joined him for an inspirational talk about literacy.

2 The Salvation Project Author Visit On the 30 th October Stewart Ross visited the John of Gaunt School. Every Y7 and Y8 student joined him for an inspirational talk about literacy. Stewart Ross s latest book The Salvation Project, which joins on to his three book Soterion trilogy which is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a small mutation (called mini flu) altered the human DNA so that no one lives beyond the age of 19. Y7 and Y8s could have brought in money to buy all three of the books for 10 or 5 for just The Salvation Project. All students who bought the books got them signed. In my opinion, the books are amazing and I highly recommend reading them if you haven t already. A Day in Lyme Recently, Year 11 Geography students took a trip to Lyme Regis. Drama club is extremely fun environment and Mrs Regan would like to have a larger group of students to attend drama club, so she can host a play around January or February. Drama club is on a Thursday. Regularly you will be given a theme in groups to practice and show to the rest of the club. However on of our recent gathering we did improve which was one of my favourites. 2 Calling all Creative Minds! Do you write stories and poems in your free time? Show off your talents to our lovely English teachers Miss Harwood and Mrs Johnson; they re dying to hear your work. Every Friday in L25, 3-4pm. The fun awaits!

3 The Library The library is an amazing place to go at lunch and break. It s a relaxing area to do homework, A.R quizzes and to read. The atmosphere is calm and relaxing; you can get your tasks done in no time. The librarian (Mrs Bruton) is very nice and is always smiling. If you feel sad or upset going to the library is a great idea. Mrs Bruton is always happy to help. We all agree that Mrs Bruton is a lovely librarian and she s always in a talkative mood, so we decided to do an interview. What is your favorite genre of books? My book taste is very much like my music taste: I like almost everything! It depends a bit on my mood I suppose. I love funny books especially from David Walliams, Roald Dahl and Michael Rosen - and I love adventure books. The only genre I m not too keen on is horror! What made you want to be a librarian? I have always loved books and I think reading is so important. Books can let you see things from a different perspective, it can take you to places you ve always wanted to go and it can give you a break from your own life for a while. I love how you can become so emotionally attached to fictional characters and miss them when you ve finished a book. You can learn so much about the world, about people and about yourself when you read. That s why I wanted to work in a school library, to help young people discover books and what wonders await inside the unassuming covers of a book What is the best part of being a librarian? The books!!! And obviously the students! It s great to be surrounded by the enthusiasm and energy of our students. Plus, I get to go all Blue Peter style and decorate the library! What is your favorite quote from a book? Winnie the Pooh is jam packed with great quotes and that is where my favourite one is from: If ever there is a tomorrow when we re not together.there is something you must always remember: you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we re apart.i ll always be with you. Do you approve of this interview? Hahahaaaaa, a bit late to ask now but as Mrs PC would say yes indeedy doody I do! If you could make an improvement to the library, what would it be? I would love to have a bigger library! If we had more space, we could have more cosy and comfortable seating for lessons and break times and quiet corners in which to read. We could also have more shelf space so the books could be displayed in a more appealing way. Five reasons why you should try cooking These are six reasons why you should take cooking for your GCSE and A-level and how it could help you in your adult life. 1. You should take cooking for GCSE or A-level because it could help you in your adult life. You should always try to cook and eat healthy food (not just takeaways). This could also help you save money when you re older! 2. You should also take it for GCSE or A-level because it could be a good career choice for you and it could be something fun to do! 3. Another reason to take cooking is because it makes a fantastic hobby. It could be something to do when you re older, a part time job or just to feed yourself different and exciting food. 4. Taking food for GCSE or A-level means that you could save yourself and your loved ones from getting severe illnesses and help you stay fighting fit for longer in your life. 5. Finally, a person who likes cooking or teaches cooking would agree that this subject is a good idea because it helps you with your life. 3

Marvelous Movie Reviews This year, the cinema universe has widely expanded with the release of many major movies.

4 Marvelous Movie Reviews This year, the cinema universe has widely expanded with the release of many major movies. In this article, you will read about probably some of the biggest blockbusters of the year. I will be focusing on the movies Beauty and the Beast, The Lego Ninjago Movie, and of course Thor: Ragnarok. Let s get started! The first movie is Beauty and the Beast. This is the third live action fairytale that Disney has produced, the first being Cinderella back in This was a highly anticipated film and was really entertaining to all. It is a recreation of the animated film made back in It is set in a little town in France where a young woman dreams of adventure, little does she know that, one dark forest away, a big beast lurks, in a tall, dark castle. When he kidnaps her father, she is forced to trek into the dark woods in search of her beloved dad. There are also some epic additions to the movie, such as the song Evermore from the stage version. This is a real mind-blowing movie that I seriously recommend to everyone, beasts and all. Following the huge success of The Lego Batman Movie, is The Lego Ninjago Movie. Being a lego fan myself, I really liked this movie and it is a great installment to the Lego cinematic universe. This story focuses on a young boy named Lloyd Garmadon, son of the evil Lord Garmadon. You can guess that Lloyd is bullied a lot, with his dad attacking the city of Ninjago very frequently. But what they don t know is that Lloyd is actually a member of the Secret Ninja Force, led by Master Wu (voiced by Jackie Chan) who defends the city from his dad. I strongly suggest you watch this movie, it is truly BRICKTASTIC! Finally, lets talk about one of my favorite movies of the year- Thor: Rangnarok. SPOILER ALERT AHEAD! This stunning movie was released not so long ago, October 24 th to be precise. We really learn a lot about Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in this movie, as he tries to stop Ragnarok, the end of Asgard, realm of the gods. But soon into the movie, Hela, goddess of death and Thor s older sister (I warned you), breaks out of her prison and takes over Asgard! Will Thor be able to escape from the clutches of the mad Grandmaster and save Asgard? Or will he be forced to fight an old friend, the incredible Hulk? This is a simply phenomenal film, and makes every marvel fan thunderstruck with awe. I loved all the above movies. A personal favorite from this year has got to be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Who could resist Baby Groot? However, I suspect the best is yet to come, released just before Christmas, the very highly anticipated next chapter in the Star Wars saga, STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI! 4
