A few prickly ones (hair brush, scrubbing brush, etc) plus a few different ones. Rope and string Stretch the rope across the room Hang the bags with the objects inside at intervals along the rope Joeys feel the bags and try to guess what the objects are. SONG Echidna Song MINUTES - 5 Echidna Ten little ants went marching by, hoorah! Hoorah! Ten little ants went marching by, hoorah! Hoorah! One little ant caught Echidna's eye, Echidna said "that'll taste just fine" Ten little ants turned into nine. hoorah! Hoorah! Nine little ants went marching by, hoorah! Hoorah! Two little ants caught Echidna's eye, Echidna said "yum yum they'll do" Four, little ants turned into two. hoorah! Hoorah! Two little ants went marching by, hoorah! Hoorah! One little ant caught Echidna's eye, Echidna said "Ant eating's fun,' Two little ants turned into one. hoorah! Hoorah! One little ant went marching by, hoorah! Hoorah! One little ant caught Echidna's eye But this little ant was far too quick, Far too quick for Echidna's lick, Echidna turned around again And said "yum yum here's another ten" TALK All About MINUTES - 5 The echidna is best known for its amazing biology. Like the platypus, this unusual mammal lays eggs and suckles its young. The echidna and platypus are the only members of a primitive group of mammals known as monotremes. are toothless and feed almost exclusively on ants and termites. They expose termite galleries by breaking open nests with their strong forepaws or snout or by digging into soil. They then extract the termites, which adhere to their long, sticky tongues. When disturbed, the echidna either curls into a spiny ball to protect its soft underside, or digs its belly into the soil, so that only the spines are exposed. DESCRIPTION: Long spines cover the body and fur is present between them. These slowmoving creatures have a bulbous forehead and a long snout to collect their food. Males have a spur on the ankle of the hind leg but, unlike that of the platypus, it is not venomous. They are equipped with a long sticky tongue that extends perhaps 17 centimetres beyond the end of the snout. OTHER NAMES: Spiny anteater. STATUS AND DISTRIBUTION: are widely distributed throughout the Australian continent and Tasmania. Although not commonly seen, they are not considered threatened. PREFERRED HABITAT: They may be found in any place with a good supply of ants and termites. They live in a wide variety of habitats, from cold mountainous peaks to deserts. They Source: Scouts Australia, Page 5 of 10

deal with very cold weather by hibernating and avoid extreme heat by sheltering in burrows or other refuges. LIFE HISTORY: are usually solitary. However, during the breeding season between July and August they give off a strong smell that may help advertise their presence to the opposite sex. During this time, several males may follow a single female in a "train" until she is ready to mate. About two weeks after mating occurs, a single soft-shelled egg is deposited directly into the pouch and hatches after 10 days. Because the echidna does not have teats, the baby clings to specialised hairs within the pouch, where it suckles milk oozing from the mother's mammary glands. The initially tiny young has an incredible growth rate, increasing its body weight up to 500-fold in the first 45 days of life. Completely hairless when born, the young is covered with short spines by the time it leaves the pouch. When it becomes too big and spiky to be carried about, the youngster will be placed in a burrow to which the mother returns every five or six days for suckling. Here it remains until about six months old. Dingoes and goannas will occasionally eat echidnas STORY An Echidna Story MINUTES - 10 There are some wonderful stories and aboriginal dreamtime tales concerning echidnas and these are readily available. Search on the net or borrow a book from your local council or school library. GAME 3 Echidna Catching Ants MINUTES - 5 Equipment: 3 Buckets, one is full of balls (tennis or golf are good) Joeys in two teams Joeys are echidnas and the balls are ants Echidna teams are in a corner with an empty bucket Joey Leader has the bucket of balls which gets up-ended and the balls are tossed all at once towards the other end of the room. Leader shouts GO and all the Joeys at once race out to retrieve one ball at a time and return with it and put it in their team bucket. Joeys can keep going back out for another ball until there are no more balls to collect. Team with most balls wins. Source: Scouts Australia, Page 6 of 10

Activity 2 Draw an Echidna MINUTES Equipment: Chalk Coloured pencils Paper A Leader reads the poem and draws the echidna slowly on the chalkboard while the Joeys follow along on their piece of paper Draw this first Add face Finish This funny little fellow, round like a ball of twine, Looking like a pincushion, or a porcupine, Is really an ECHIDNA, through many think it neater To call him by the title of Australian Ant-eater If you feel you d like to draw him, nut can t think how he begins You only have to sketch a plate and fill it fill of pins. His taste in food is rather odd, or so it seems to me, For all he eats is lots of ants for breakfast, lunch and tea. Now ants are often hard to catch, or so I should suppose, But not for this echidna, who can find them with his nose. So draw him in a long one that will hide his sticky tongue Source: Scouts Australia, Page 7 of 10

That s just ideal for snaring ants, old ones as well as young. For ants that hide beneath the earth and think it safer there Echidna s claws are strong and sharp to dig and lay them bare. So draw his claws; then let him go in search of nests of ants And watch the way he licks them up with speed and elegance. GAME 4 Catch the Ants MINUTES - 5 Equipment: Peas enough for about 3 per Joey Plates Straws Joeys in relay teams Joeys run forward, suck up a pea on the end of a straw and transfer it to a second plate. First team to transfer all the peas wins. Additional Activity Echidna Art MINUTES 10 Echidna Draw an outline of an echidna and paint the snout, add pink tongue flicked out to catch ants. Have them roll small (depending on size of echidna body) squares of paper (painted brown) around a pencil and glue edge when rolled. Slide off pencil and let dry...then glue onto echidna, starting from rear. Source: Scouts Australia, Page 8 of 10

Sit the Joeys down in a quiet place for the announcements prior to parade: Announcements: Details for Next week Activity details etc CLOSING PARADE Joey Scouts: Presentations: Certificates Challenge Badges Awards etc Joey Scouts on Parade Form a circle Prayer: All reply: Joey Scouts - Alert Joey Scouts - Salute lowers the flag (lowering must only be done by a Leader) The other leaders drop the salute as the flag comes to the lowest point and all the Joey Scouts do the same. Prepare for Prayer (Joey Scout may read or say a prayer) Good-bye Joey Scouts Good-bye Joey Scouts. Joey Scouts - Dismiss All Joey Scouts and Leaders turn to the right, Salute and move off.
