1 BACKCARE UK BACKCARE AWARENESS WEEK 2016
2 RADIO CAMPAIGN COVERAGE OVERVIEW Live & Studio Interviews:16 Pre-Recorded Interviews: 15 Total Items of Coverage: 31 Total Listener Reach: 50,223,500 Objectives We set out to achieve broadcast coverage across the UK for BackCare UK in-line with Back Care Awareness Week Our brief was to place Dr Brian Hammond at the centre of a series of leading Regional and National radio interviews, discussing how BackCare UK hopes to raise awareness of the reality of back pain in young carers and the various steps that can be taken to prevent it. All of the interviews were to be guided by a cue sheet, to ensure all of BackCare UK s key messages were included and listeners were directed to where they could find out more information. We aimed to reach a minimum of 4,000,000 listeners across a range of National and Regional outlets and for the messages to presented in a direct but editorial fashion, with plenty of stats, facts and calls-to-action. Achievements We had a fantastic result for BackCare UK for Back Care Awareness Week 2016, significantly exceeding our KPIs and securing a wide-range of highly engaging interviews, some of which lasted well in excess of 10 minutes, with a total of nearly 3 hours total air-time on the live and studio interviews alone. Amongst the many additional highlights, the mighty BFBS broadcast the interview to their colossal Global listenership - which totals 11,000,000 listeners and we syndicated the pre-record to a wide range of leading UK stations, including the highly-regarded Sky News Radio. An unbelievably hectic morning for Dr Brian Hammond, but one which he carried out with utmost professionalism and considerable aplomb fantastic work! Summary This has been a hugely rewarding campaign to work on and a massive success on many fronts. We have also had a great deal of extremely positive feedback from presenters they re in agreeance that Brian gave excellent, engaging interviews and came across as relaxed, knowledgeable and self-assured. In summary, a fantastic campaign to work on and we very much look forward to working with BackCare UK again to support BackCare Awareness Week 2017.
3 Press Release: Embargoed 03/10/2016 BACK PAIN: WHO CARES FOR YOUNG CARERS? Imaging working an average of 50 hours a week unpaid, whilst doing a full week at school. Shockingly for 13,000 of the UK s young carers this is a reality. Their chores include cooking, housework, shopping, helping someone out of bed, helping someone dress and looking after brothers and sisters. According to Backcare UK, there are 7 million unpaid carers in the UK and staggeringly 700,000 are children. That s about one in 12 secondary aged pupils. Not only is caring for a loved one emotionally demanding but it also takes its physical toll. In fact, 70% of carers in the UK suffer from back pain and are at high risk of developing chronic pain. BackCare UK wish to shine a light on the invisible army of young carers and discuss what can be done to prevent them from developing serious back pain. Backcare UK belief that back pain prevention has to begin in childhood to lessen the chance of it occurring in adulthood. With the already heavy burden that young carers face, suffering from back pain is really a double whammy. Suggested Questions 1. What can cause back pain in young carers? 2. What are the symptoms of back pain in children and how can parents/schools tell? 3. Does back pain cause serious absenteeism? 4. What sort of problems can back pain lead to in later life? About Dr Brian Hammond Dr Brian Hammond is the executive chair at BackCare UK. BackCare UK will also be hosting the Back Pain Show 19th- 20 th May a one-stop shop for all those who suffer from back problems along with the health professionals who look after them and are rapidly approaching their esteemed 50 th Birthday.
