Where can I hear Angel Radio? We are loud and proud on Digital DAB Radios in Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Aldershot, Bristol, Birmingham, Brighton, Cambridge, London, Norwich, West Sussex & Woking. On tens of thousands of FM Radios in Portsmouth, Gosport, Borough of Havant and surrounding areas. On RadioPlayer, also Tunein, AppleTV and Online - around the world.
Who listens to Angel Radio? In 1999 our original target audience was older people aged 60+ but 17-years later the popularity of Angel Radio s unique programmes are enjoyed by people of all ages. However, our core listenership is still older people who are retired and spend 6 or more hours a day tuned to Angel. Angel Radio has a large loyalty audience who have the radio station on all day every day as their main source of entertainment and information.
Digital Coverage in the Solent area
FM Coverage in the Solent area on 89.3
Why is Angel Radio so popular? Angel Radio is very different to most modern stations which rely on a few records played in constant rotation, expect most listeners to tune in while driving to and from work, and discourage listener contact. Angel Radio programmes are designed to keep people listening all day every day by providing a much wider variety of types of music, friendly banter and the unique personalities of the presenters. Our presenters can choose from the 150,000 records in our library, which includes Ballads, Swing, Big Band, Jazz and Blues, Novelty, Light Music, Popular Vocal, Show Tunes, etc. from the 1920s into the 1960s
What about brand awareness? In 2004, long before any of the many TV and radio documentaries about Angel Radio had been produced, long before the many magazine articles had been written about us, and long before we won awards for our work, the Government Department of Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) had an independent research company, Research Works, conduct 304 street interviews regarding all aspects of the work of Angel Radio. Public awareness of Angel Radio was measured at 31%. In the 13 years since that survey, the mass of national and international publicity about our unique work, has made Angel Radio a brand known all over the UK and elsewhere.

What s unique about Angel Radio Angel Radio s unique record library carries 150,000 vintage tracks. Most of our playlist was recorded between 1920 and We still play proper records rather than digitised files. Angel Radio s unique team of presenters and receptionists are aged between 16 and 93. Angel Radio s shows are presented by local people. Angel Radio is a charity providing media services for older people
Angel Radio s Music Programmes Our programmes all feature real people playing proper records. There are no computer generated jukebox shows on Angel Radio. An independent survey by Radio Monitor in November 2014 concluded that all the FM radio stations available in the Portsmouth area musically overlap each other by playing the same records. except Angel Radio. The survey showed that some radio stations play less than 300 records in a 24-hour period, whereas Angel Radio played over 370 different records in the same period and one commercial radio station played 115 records that other stations also played.
Information on Angel Radio Angel Radio has several types of information programmes. 1. Community Noticeboard Short ads for charities. 2. Talking News for blind & partially sighted listeners. 3. Breakfast Show includes Weather Forecast & Events Diary. 4. B.I.L.L. Being Independent in Later Life. 5. Scam Busters & Conversations with Service Providers. 6. A series of shows highlighting the work of Brendoncare. Former Radio 390 DJ visits Ange Radio Mayor of Havant visits Angel Radio
Our Awards Angel Radio has collected many awards for our work. Here are a few Best Radio Station Queen s Award Hampshire Good Best Silver Surfer Serving Listeners for Voluntary Neighbours Website 2008 in the South Service MEDIA SUPPORT Angel Radio has a good rapport with other broadcasters around the world and has been the subject of many documentary programmes highlighting our work. In 1999 Angel Radio s request programme was aired coast-to-coast across Australia by ABC Radio. In 2002 and 2013 our work was filmed for TV audiences in South Korea. In 2013, 2014 and 2015 we appeared on BBC TV and BBC Radio. On BBC Radio 1 Sara Cox praised Angel Radio and sang along to our jingles live on air. Radio 5-Live had a live link to the Angel Radio studio to interview our guest David Willetts MP. In 2014 the German TV company, ARD, produced a documentary about our unique work which was aired on national German TV and also aired on satellite TV in North & South America. A German radio documentary about Angel Radio was Germany s entry for the Prix Italia Austrian national broadcaster ORF also produced and aired a documentary about us.
LOCAL SUPPORT FOR ANGEL RADIO When Angel Radio applied for a radio licence which would cover a larger area on FM. We were overwhelmed by the letters of support from local people Within my role at Havant Borough Council I have found Angel Radio s support invaluable. Over the years they have assisted me in getting many informative and in some cases emergency messages out over the airwaves to their listeners. Sally Foster, Communications Officer, Havant Borough Council It has patiently and consistently delivered a high quality service. David Willetts MP There are many commercial radio services available on the FM waveband across Portsmouth but none of them are dedicated to serving senior citizens. Radio can provide a vital service for senior citizens; reducing isolation and preventing loneliness and even depression. Angel will fill the current gap in provision at a time when the 60 year old plus population is growing. Caroline Dinenage MP for Gosport Angel Radio fills many of the gaps that our statutory services cannot provide especially in area relating to mental and physical health.... Isolation is a growing problem especially for people whose families have moved away and the opportunity for the FM licence to extend Angel Radio s reach to the whole of the city will be most welcome... Cllr Terry Hall, Eastney & Cranswater If we could use Angel Radio to get our message out to more people in our County, that would be a welcomed service. Jane Edsell, Head of Hampshire Trading Standards...we appreciate the loyalty and generosity we have been given. We wish you success with your bid to operate a full commercial FM licence and we look forward to continuing our association with Angel Radio. Judith Steward, Hayling Wheelchair Services We are constantly reminded by the media that the UK has an ever-growing older population, so it beggars belief as to why we are so poorly served by the main broadcaster... there is unquestionably a need and a place for Angel Radio, and the more people it s made available to the better! EH, listener We have been enjoying Angel Radio for the last five years, we find it s the only station which plays the music we can relate to at the tender ages of 84 and When we were looking to move from Fishbourne, our number one priority was to make sure we could get a good Angel Radio signal... Les & Rita, Listeners
Online Listeners Angel Radio has a large audience around the world. The average listening period for our online listeners is 6-hours 28-minutes.
OTHER ANGEL RADIO PROJECTS In 2015 Angel Radio was selected by Ofcom to be awarded one of only 10 UK licenses to run its own Digital DAB multiplex. Our service now carries a whole host of stations for the Portsmouth/Gosport area, including Radio Caroline, BFBS, Breeze, The Flash, and many more. Ofcom has also awarded us a new FM licence, which has enabled Angel Radio to considerably extend its reach on FM to cover Portsmouth, Havant, Gosport and the surrounding area. Our new FM frequency is ideally placed to catch accidental listeners migrating to or from BBC Radio 2. On 1 st January 2017 Angel Radio launched its new 1960s pirate-style radio station. This station is entirely based in the 1960s and provides entertainment for people who enjoyed the 60s pop pirate ships. Our team includes ex-radio Caroline, King Radio and Swinging Radio England deejays. Our FM aerial mast Bob Sevier & Kevin Fiford... Angie
A New FM Service for Angel Radio Although Angel Radio can be heard across a large area of the Solent region on DAB digital radios, it is still a fact that many of our potential older listeners still have FM as their main listening device. This is why Angel Radio is now broadcasting on a new frequency, 89.3 and using a higher power transmitter. The photograph shows our Station Manager working on our new aerial array. The main transmitting aerial is over 100 metres above sea level, which you can see by the background of the photo. On FM the higher the aerial the better the signal.
Advertising on Angel Radio Angel Radio is always delighted to hear from businesses, small and large, looking for a way to reach an audience which isn t served by other radio stations. We are able to produce professional commercials to suit the budget of most companies. You tell us what would like to spend and what you would like for your money.. we will produce a package to fit your requirements. Most of our established clients have a 40-second commercial aired 4 times each day. Our newer clients, who may wish to test the water before they commit to a longer run, often choose to go for a 30-second commercial aired twice each day. Whatever your choice, we are happy to help your brand get on the wireless. Angel Radio commercials are produced using professional voiceovers using a script provided by the client. We can assist with script-writing if required. Commercials are aired between at different times each day to ensure they are heard by a wide audience. They are aired simultaneously on FM, DAB & Online.
Sponsoring shows & slots on Angel Radio PROGRAMME SPONSOR Most radio shows on Angel are sponsored by individuals. Some companies also sponsor shows, but there are regulations which mean company sponsor announcements cannot carry a call to action. This means the sponsor announcements can publicise their business but cannot say call us or visit our website, etc. SLOT SPONSOR These include our weather forecast, events diary, travel updates, community noticeboard, etc. again these announcements cannot carry a call to action but they are a very good way to raise the profile of a business to Angel Radio listeners.
