4 DAVIDSON COUNTY ARES MEETS WITH AMERICAN RED CROSS OF NASHVILLE AREA The ARRL and American Red Cross (ARC) Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishes a partnership between the two organizations, to provide assistance in communities impacted by disaster events and the Unites States. Signed in January, 2016 and valid for 5 years, the MOU recognizes the strengths of each organization, and encourages the ARC chapters and local and state ARES groups to engages in discussions to plan for local response or disaster relief operations. Members of the Davidson County Amateur Radio Services (ARES) organization met at the American Red Cross Nashville Area facility for the DCARES monthly meeting. There was a great deal of information presented by the ARC representatives, and the members got to see the radio capabilities at the facility, as well as the drop kits organized for emergency operations. Attendees were provided copies of the MOU, which provides detail about each organization, response activities, mutual support and other pertinent information. The DCARES members spent well beyond Official meeting time to learn and see more from their ARC hosts. Many thanks to the DCARES EC and AECs - Paul Stinson (KJ4WQN), Adam Deland (W8IFG), Jim Bradfield (W4BSL) and David House (N4FPE) - for working with the Nashville Area American Red Cross to organize the on-site meeting. AMATEUR RADIO EMERGENCY SERVICES (ARES)... If you are not part of your local Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) group, please consider becoming a member. They offer valuable services their served communities, not just in times of severe conditions, but many also serve the communications needs for local events. As an ARES member, you will learn ways to enhance your Amateur Radio operating skills BEFORE you need them. For more information about ARES in the ARRL TN section, check out web page at tnares.com/. ARES volunteers are licensed amateur radio operators who are organized and trained to provide emergency communications during emergencies and public service events. "When all else fails" is a motto of ARES because in many instances, amateur radio communications are operational when other communications systems have failed or are over burdened. To get involved, simply find the county you wish to serve in on the tnares.com website, and get in contact with the emergency coordinator. ARRL TN Section Public Information Team OUR MISSION: Work throughout Tennessee to show the value of amateur radio as a hobby, a skill, and a means of emergency communications to the general public to generate interest in amateur radio operations.
