1 ARRL TN SECTION PIC NEWS ARRL TN Section Public Information Newsletter APRIL 2017 YOUR CLUB IS SPECIAL BUT IS IT A SPECIAL SERVICE CLUB??? Each Amateur Radio Club is unique in its own way through its members, its specialties and areas of focus. Some clubs pride themselves on their contesting skills, others on their community and emergency services, and others may be the best antenna-makers around! And then there are the ARRL Special Service Clubs. ARRL SPECIAL SERVICE CLUBS CONTENT FROM ARRLSPECIAL SERVICE CLUB PAGE BY DEFINITION, a Special Service Club is A club that exists to go above and beyond for their communities and for Amateur Radio is what defines a Special Service Club (SSC). They are the leaders in their Amateur Radio communities who provide active training classes, publicity programs and actively pursue technical projects and operating activities. This special service clubs designation is held by four clubs in the TN Section, including : Stones River ARC, Nashville ARC, Reelfoot ARC and our newest addition, Chattanooga ARC. These clubs hold the Special Services Club designation with pride for their service to their communities. The process requires completion of an application and specific levels of approval,. Interested in recognizing your club as one that strives for excellence in Community Service? Talk with the TN Section ACC (Affiliated Club Coordinator WA4VGZ) about the process, and find the application at: MEMPHIS FREEFEST Sponsored by: The Mid-South Amateur Radio Association (MARA) Date: Saturday, April 8, 2017 Time: 9 am to 3 pm. If you are not part of your local Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) group, please consider becoming a member. They offer valuable services their served communities, not just in times of severe conditions, but many also serve the communications needs for local events. As an ARES member, you will learn ways to enhance your Amateur Radio operating skills BEFORE you need them. For more information about ARES in the ARRL TN section, check out web page at tnares.com/. ARES volunteers are licensed amateur radio operators who are organized and trained to provide emergency communications during emergencies and public service events. "When all else fails" is a motto of ARES because in many instances, amateur radio communications are operational when other communications systems have failed or are over burdened. To get involved, simply find the county you wish to serve in on the tnares.com website, and get in contact with the emergency coordinator. ARRL TN Section Public Information Team OUR MISSION: Work throughout Tennessee to show the value of amateur radio as a hobby, a skill, and a means of emergency communications to the general public to generate interest in amateur radio operations. 4 The Ides of March Hamfest de Jamie Hall, WB4YDL, RARC Webmaster and special thanks to Harrell Davidson WD4LAR Sponsored by: Reelfoot Amateur Radio Club Date: Saturday. March 25, 2017 The 10th Annual "Ides of March" Hamfest sponsored by the Reelfoot Amateur Radio Club in Union City, Tennessee was held at the Tennessee National Guard Armory in Union City, TN. The weather put a damper on attendance, but the many folks who were able to attend had quite a treat with the visitors, forum, and fresh off the grill food offered at the Hamfest. And, of course DOOR PRIZES what would a Hamfest be without them? Content from Reelfoot ARC Events A large number of quality prizes were given away at this year's Ides of March Hamfest. Prizes came from vendors such as Elecraft, Icom, Ten-Tec, Yaesu, the American Radio Relay League, MFJ Enterprises, RT Systems, and many others. Over 30 prizes were given away which meant a name was drawn from the "chicken coop" about every 10 minutes! The top prizes were a TNØ7 Engineering Backpack Antenna as 4th prize, a Baofeng UV-82 2M/440MHz dual band HT donated by JMR Sales as 3rd prize, a Kenwood TM-281A 2M FM transceiver as 2nd prize and Grand Prize was an Icom IC- 718 HF transceiver. There was also much literature available from many of the suppliers of amateur radio equipment. In addition, anyone who obtained or upgraded their license in the past year received a free Yaesu cap! Tennessee Section Manager Keith Miller N9DGK and ARRL Vice-Director Ed Hudgens WB4RHQ were also there, and gave a great forum and updated the group on happenings within the Delta Division and the Tennessee Section. See their website to read all of the details and to enjoy more of their pictures and narratives about the event. YLRL Echolink Net Do you know a YL who is eager to make contacts with others, but unsure of which nets to participate in? Or, perhaps you are a YL who would like to talk with other young ladies on the air about Amateur Radio, but don t have the equipment to talk outside of your local UHF/VHF nets. Here s a great way to chat with other YL s without needing anything more than an Amateur Radio license, an EchoLink account (it s FREE) and a cell phone or computer with the EchoLink app installed! There is a Young Ladies Radio League (YLRL) EchoLink Net that that meets weekly on Thursday nights at 8:00 p.m. Eastern/7:00 p.m. Central time using the ALARA EchoLink Conference Node You don't need to be a member of the YLRL, but you do have to be a licensed "YL" to participate in the net. It s a lot of fun, has some great information, and you can learn some interesting things about radio operations that take place around the world. There are some YLs that call in pretty regularly from the UK, Japan, and across the US. Feel free to check in on Thursday evenings. Learn more about the Young Ladies Radio League (YLRL) at: Don t have an EchoLink account yet? Check their website at
