2 Quick Start Instructions This page explains how to turn on the RGC250 and switch between s. Refer to Selecting Menu Items at the bottom of the page as needed. or traffic information may not be available in your configuration. NOTE If a traffic advisory (TA) occurs in mode (steps 5, 7, and 8), the RGC250 will a yellow TRAFFIC annunciator even though no other traffic information is ed in that mode. 1. Make sure the RGC250 power switch is in the ON position, start your engines, then turn on the avionics master switch. 2. 9 General Description Figure 1-1 shows the Radar Graphics Computer, model RGC250 from BFGoodrich Avionics Systems, Inc. The RGC250 lets you superimpose and traffic from other BFG systems on top of the precipitation ed on your compatible weather radar indicator (figure 1-2). The RGC250 also lets you simultaneously information from another graphics computer. Figure 1-1. 13 Introduction This chapter describes the RGC250 s controls and indicators, menu items, traffic s, and messages, followed by complete operating instructions. If you want to turn on and operate the RGC250 before reading about its operation, skip to the complete operating instructions on page For an abbreviated version of the operating instructions, refer to the quick start instructions inside the front cover of this guide. This chapter assumes you are familiar with the operation of the systems that are attached to the RGC250. This chapter does not repeat information already available in the associated pilot s guides and user s guides. Refer to those guides for explanations of, modes, tests, graphics, etc. that are generated and defined by those systems. This chapter also assumes that the RGC250 is connected to both traffic and avoidance systems. If it s not connected to a traffic avoidance system, ignore all traffic references. If it s not connected to a avoidance system, ignore all references. The RGC250 s traffic and similar to those ed on the stand-alone traffic and avoidance systems. Refer to pages 2-25 and 2-26 for a description of the differences. Wherever you see the word T[C]AS in this chapter, read it as TCAS if a TCAS791 is connected to the RGC250, or as TAS if a SKY497 is connected to the RGC250. RGC250 Pilot s Guide 2-1

14 Controls & Indicators Figure 2-1 and the following paragraphs describe the controls and indicators on the RGC250. The RGC250 also provides connections for remote yoke-mount switches that can duplicate or replace the following buttons: traffic, 360- view, ABV/BLW, and ENT/CLR. RGC250 Controls and Indicators or Power/Fault LED The power/fault LED (light emitting diode) glows green when the power is on and no fatal faults are detected. The LED glows red or flashes red when the power is on and a fatal fault is detected; in this case, the RGC250 is inoperable. The LED is dark when the power is off. Power Switch The power switch controls power to the RGC250. Traffic Button Pressing the traffic button changes the to the dedicated traffic screen. If the dedicated traffic screen is already ed, pressing the traffic button returns the to the previous traffic and view. (If the RGC250 is in TA AUTO mode and a TA causes the dedicated traffic screen to appear, pressing the traffic button while the TA is ed has no effect.) Pressing the traffic button with the traffic avoidance system in standby yields a standby message. Pressing the traffic button with no traffic avoidance system connected yields an error message. 2-2 RGC250 Pilot s Guide

15 RNG Range Button Pressing the range button when the dedicated traffic screen is ed toggles the through one of the four sets of traffic ranges listed in table 2-1. Table 2-1. ABV BLW MNU Display Mode Button Pressing the altitude button when the RGC250 is in -TCAS mode or when the dedicated traffic screen or the small traffic window is ed toggles the altitude of the traffic through the ABV, BLW, and NRM altitude s. In all other cases, pressing the altitude button does not affect the other than toggling the altitude mode label that s ed on several screens. If the traffic avoidance system is in standby, pressing the button has no effect. Pressing the button with no traffic avoidance system connected yields an error message. Menu Button Pressing the menu button s the RGC250 menu unless a TA exists or the dedicated traffic screen is ed; in those cases, the menu is not ed because traffic is given priority. If the menu is already ed, pressing the button scrolls through the options for the RGC250 Pilot s Guide 2-3

16 selected menu item. If the selected menu item has only one option, pressing the button has no effect. Left & Right Arrow Buttons Pressing an arrow button selects the menu item to the left or right of the currently selected menu item. Outward pointing arrows below the bottom left and right corners of the menu box indicate that there is one or more menu items off-screen that you can select by pressing an arrow button. If there s no menu on the screen, pressing an arrow button has no effect. ENT CLR Enter/Clear Button Pressing this button with the RGC250 menu ed executes or activates the selected menu option. If the menu remains on the screen after you press the button, pressing the button again clears the menu from the screen. If no menu is ed and a avoidance system is connected, pressing the button clears the or the LIGHTNING annunciation from the screen. If no menu is ed and no avoidance system is connected, or if the dedicated traffic screen is ed, pressing the button has no effect. 360-View Button Pressing the 360- view button ( ) toggles the between sector view and 360 view. Pressing with no avoidance system connected yields an error message. If the dedicated traffic screen is ed, pressing has no effect. Remote Off/Fail Light This customer-supplied indicator light turns on when the RGC250 is turned off and when the RGC250 s power/fault LED glows red or flashes red. Menu Items & Options NOTE Figures 2-2 through 2-10 and the following paragraphs describe all the RGC250 menu items and options. (See page 2-33 for instructions on using the menu.) Page 2-10 describes the modes. TCAS OPER STBY or TAS OPER STBY SECTOR LX ON LX OFF Traffic System Mode Use this menu item to place the connected traffic avoidance system into standby or into operating mode. If you re airborne, you will only be able to switch into standby if you have a SKY497 and you do not have a squat switch. Sector Display Mode Use this menu item to enable or disable the of, the LIGHTNING annunciator, and all messages when the is in sector view. Heading Stabilization Use this menu item to turn heading stabilization on or off on the connected. Self Test Use this menu item to run the self test on the connected. Traffic System Self Test Use this menu item to run the self test on the connected traffic avoidance system. The self test can only be performed when the traffic avoidance system is in standby. What s Displayed on the Screen Sector View The type of information ed on the screen depends primarily on the chosen view, the traffic setting, the SECTOR LX ON/OFF setting, and whether or not the dedicated traffic screen is being ed. (The priorities on page 2-12, and the special considerations on page 2-29 also affect what gets ed.) Table 2-2 and the following sections describe how these settings affect what s ed on the screen. Page 2-26 lists other messages that may be ed on the screen. Sector view is the 90 - or 120 -forward view normally ed on radar indicators. The following information is ed in sector view. (See parts a and b of figures 2-11 through 2-22.) Weather Information i.e., precipitation graphics and information Traffic Information to the extent specified in the chosen traffic. 22 360 View Pressing switches the to a 360 view. The range you set for the radar serves as the range for the 360 view. The following information is ed in 360 view. (See part c of figures 2-11 through 2-22.) Traffic Information to the extent specified in the chosen traffic. No traffic indication is ed if the traffic avoidance system is in standby. Information If the radar range is set to 20 nmi or farther, the RGC250 s to indicate detected within the ed range. If the radar range is set closer than 20 nmi, the RGC250 s the message Increase Range for LX Data prompting you to increase the range if you want to see any. The setting of menu item SECTOR has no effect on the of information in 360 view. Traffic Display Modes The RGC250 has four traffic s: -T[C]AS TA AUTO TA AUTOW These traffic s determine the extent to which the RGC250 s traffic information. These modes apply whether the is in sector view or 360 view. You can change the traffic using the DISP MD menu item. The RGC250 saves the traffic mode setting when you turn the power off, and then restores the setting when you turn the unit back on. Figures 2-11 through 2-22 illustrate the four traffic modes on three families of supported radars RGC250 Pilot s Guide

23 Mode In mode, the RGC250 doesn t traffic, but it does the word TRAFFIC when a TA occurs. Once the TA is resolved, the word TRAFFIC disappears. Pressing the ABV/BLW button or the RNG button has no effect on the in this mode. -T[C]AS Mode In -T[C]AS mode, the RGC250 s traffic to represent traffic detected within the ed view, but only out to the maximum traffic range of the connected traffic avoidance system (6 nmi for the SKY497, and 20 or 24 nmi for the TCAS791, depending on the range option selected at installation [table 2-1, page 2-3]). The ABV/BLW button controls the altitude of the detected traffic. Pressing the RNG button has no effect on the in this mode other than to change the value ed for dedicated traffic screen range. TA AUTO Mode In TA AUTO mode, the RGC250 doesn t traffic, but it does switch to the dedicated traffic screen (figures 2-23 and 2-24, page 2-25) if a TA occurs. Five seconds after the last TA is resolved, the screen reverts back to the previously ed view with the RGC250 in TA AUTO mode. As long as the dedicated traffic screen is not ed, pressing the ABV/BLW or RNG button does not affect elements on the screen, but it does change the altitude indicator and range value ed for the dedicated traffic screen. Pressing the traffic button while a TA is ed has no effect. TA AUTOW Mode In TA AUTOW mode, the RGC250 doesn t traffic overlaid on the weather, but it does a small traffic window on top of the upper right corner of the when a TA occurs. The ABV/BLW button controls the altitude of the window. The range of the window is fixed at 6 nmi, so pressing the RNG button while the window is ed has no effect other than to change the value ed for the dedicated traffic RGC250 Pilot s Guide 2-11

24 screen range. Pressing the traffic button while the window is ed switches the to the dedicated traffic screen (figures 2-23 and 2-24, page 2-25). Pressing the traffic button again reverts the back to the previously ed view with the RGC250 in TA AUTOW mode. If a TA still exists, the small traffic window will still be present. Once the TA condition is resolved, press any button to remove the window or wait 5 seconds and the window will automatically disappear. Dedicated Traffic Screen Display Priorities The dedicated traffic screen (figures 2-23 and 2-24 on page 2-25) appears when you press the traffic button and also when a TA occurs in TA AUTO mode. No information, precipitation graphics, or data from another graphics computer are ed on the dedicated traffic screen; just traffic, traffic information, and the radar mode indicated on a 360. When the dedicated traffic screen is ed, only the RNG, ABV/BLW, and traffic buttons are operative. (The traffic button is not operative if the dedicated traffic screen appears due to a TA in TA AUTO mode.) Up to two of these messages can be ed at one time in - TCAS mode, on the dedicated traffic screen, and in the small traffic window. TRAFFIC This message can appear in mode and when another graphics computer connected to the RGC250 is in checklist mode. The message indicates that a TA is present. This message overwrites any other message that would normally be ed in the same place on the screen. Special Considerations AlliedSignal/Bendix/King Circle Mode If a Bendix GC360A graphics computer is connected to the RGC250, and you put the GC360A into circle mode by pressing the 360 button on the GC360A, the RGC250 senses the switch into circle mode and switches into a special 360 mode in which the GC360A s the range RGC250 Pilot s Guide 2-29

42 rings, navigation information, and forward precipitation, while the RGC250 s 360 traffic (according to the selected traffic ). This mode is similar to the RGC250 s 360 view with forward precipitation and other graphics computer information added to the, and subtracted. Pressing has no effect while the radar is in Bendix circle mode, but you can still and use the RGC250 menu. AlliedSignal/Bendix/King Vertical Profile Mode If a Bendix radar is connected to the RGC250, the RGC250 passes through the Bendix vertical profile mode. The only information the RGC250 s on top of the vertical profile mode radar data is the TRAFFIC annunciator whenever the connected traffic avoidance system detects a TA. Honeywell/Sperry/RCA Target Mode If a Honeywell/Sperry/RCA Primus radar is connected to the RGC250 and the radar is in target mode, the RGC250 can not overlay any data on top of any intense (level 3) areas of precipitation on the. Checklists In order to any checklists or emergency checklists from another graphics computer, the RGC250 must be in sector view. Regardless of the traffic selected, the only item the RGC250 s on the screen while a checklist is ed, is a small TRAFFIC annunciator if a TA occurs. The RGC250 will not automatically switch to the dedicated traffic screen in TA-AUTO mode when a TA occurs, nor will it a small traffic window if a TA occurs in TA-AUTOW mode. The RGC250 will however allow you to go to the dedicated traffic screen using the traffic button. TCAS II Data The RGC250 is not designed to TCAS II data on radar indicators RGC250 Pilot s Guide

43 Operating Instructions Operation Introduction This section lists the tasks you can perform with the RGC250. The first seven tasks (turn-on through turn-off) are RGC250-specific tasks. The last seven tasks (Test the T[C]AS Unit to Change the Display Mode) explain how to use the RGC250 to perform tasks that would normally be performed on the stand-alone traffic and systems. For these last seven tasks, refer to the corresponding Stormscope, SKYWATCH, or TCAS I pilot/ user s guides for an explanation of the tasks as well as when and why they should be performed. Turn On the RGC250 Pilots typically leave the power switches on all avionics systems in their aircraft in the ON position so that they can control power to all the avionics systems at one time using the avionics master switch. The following procedures reflect that practice. 1. Before starting your engines and turning on the avionics master switch, move the RGC250 power switch up to the ON position if it s not already there. CAUTION Turning on the avionics master switch and then starting your engines could damage the RGC250 due to power surges. 2. Start your engines and then turn on the avionics master switch. The power/fault LED glows red for a fraction of a second then glows green. If another graphics computer is connected to the RGC250, it may a power-on message on the radar indicator. Once the other graphics computer s power-on message disappears, the BFGoodrich power-on screen (figure 2-25 or 2-26) appears on the radar indicator and stays there until the RGC250 completes its power-on self test. If the RGC250 passes the self test, Self-Test: PASS is ed on the BFGoodrich screen for 5 seconds; then the switches into sector view and whatever traffic was active before the unit was turned off. 44 If the RGC250 fails the self-test, Self-Test: FAIL is ed on the BFGoodrich screen along with an error message and a prompt to press the ENT/CLR button to continue. If you continue, the RGC250 will still work, but operation of some of the features may be degraded, depending on the nature of the failure. Contact your authorized BFGoodrich Avionics Systems dealer for troubleshooting help. 3. If the LED glows red for more than a fraction of a second at turn on, or flashes red, turn the RGC250 power switch off then back on. If the LED continues to glow red or flash red, contact your authorized BFGoodrich Avionics Systems dealer for troubleshooting help. 45 NOTE The RGC250 has fault-tolerant pass-through circuitry so that the radar indicator and any other connected graphics computer will continue to operate even if the RGC250 is not operational. Use the Menu Refer to this procedure when the other procedures in this chapter require you to use a menu item. 1. Press the MNU button to the menu. 2. Press an arrow button to move the selection box to the desired menu item. If you reach the last menu item in the direction you re scrolling, pressing the arrow button again jumps the selection box back to the opposite end of the menu. 3. If a menu item has only one option (e.g. TEST), press the ENT/CLR button to activate the option and immediately clear the menu from the screen. 4. If a menu item has multiple options, press the MNU button to scroll through the options. 5. When the option you want is ed below the menu item, press the ENT/CLR button to activate the new option. Once you activate a new menu option, the selected option title changes from yellow to white. 6. To clear the menu from the screen, press the ENT/CLR button again, or wait 5 seconds and the menu will disappear on its own. Toggle Between Sector View & 360 View Press repeatedly to toggle between sector view and 360 view. Pressing while the dedicated traffic screen is ed has no effect.
