22 12. LOW SINGAL FREATURES The CDF-992 provides the ability to operate in areas where the signal level is below that normally detectable with audio from the receiver. This functionality is active ONLY when the DF SCREEN or the HOMING SCREEN is in view. If either of these screens is active, this feature is selected automatically, and the indication of a signal present will occur for signals that are below the noise-floor of the receiver. When a signal is shown to be present (by the highlighting of the frequency in the bottom right corner of the display), the operator is able to establish that the DF is operating using the lowsignal feature by observing that the displayed signal is below the detection threshold on the Sig Level bar-graph (on the left of the screen). Once the signal strength improves to be above the normal detection threshold, the squelch will break, and the DF will automatically swap into normal operational mode. The Low Signal Feature is used to detect (and DF) signals if the frequency is known. Under this condition, the DF SCREEN or the HOMING SCREEN should be selected along with the chosen frequency. Using the Low-Signal Feature, signal detection and bearings are provided once the CDF-992 determines signals are originating from a common relative-bearing over a period of time. Accordingly, functionality of this mode is assisted if the aircraft heading is maintained relatively constant. Publication No Page 2-11 Section 2 CDF-992 Pilots Guide

23 MODE CDF-992 DIRECTION FINDER, CONTROL DISPLAY, SYSTEM-7 This mode allows the user to quickly toggle a DF or HM display between the 406 COSPAS / SARSAT bearing or any one VHF channel. 1) Turn MODE selector switch to SC if not already in this position. 2) Turn FREQ selector switch until the MHz frequency is selected as a signal frequency selections. 3) Press and release RIGHT push button (Active / Standby). 4) Observe that the frequency MHz is selected in addition to the MHz frequency. 5) If an alternative secondary frequency is required, turn the FREQ selector switch to the required frequency. N.B. Only VHF frequencies can be selected; i.e. any frequency other than MHz in displayed example. 24 If the 406 Mode operation has been selected from the SC Mode Screen as described above: Observe that MHz and the chosen Secondary frequency are displayed on the top and bottom right-hand side of the DF Mode screen. The bottom right-hand frequency is within an outline box and colored green, which signifies that this frequency has been selected for DF display. When either frequency is highlighted, it is actively receiving a signal. The Signal Level bar graph will depict the level of signal being received on the Active Frequency (Bottom, green) and should be at a level above the Squelch level marker for Audio to be heard from the DF System. To toggle between the MHz and the Secondary frequency: Press the Active/Standby push button key (right push button). The indicated frequencies will swap between the Top Right and Bottom Right locations on the screen. 27 15. PROGRAMMING MODE OPERATION The CDF-992 Programming Operation allows configuration of the Auxiliary Frequencies, Auxiliary Frequency Squelch Levels, and Main Frequency Squelch Levels. Main Frequencies cannot be changed for safety. This mode should ONLY BE USED BY AUTHORISED USERS as configuration changes can cause incorrect operation. Entry into this mode is accordingly made fully separate to the main operational program. A. Entering Configuration Mode 1) Upon power up, the controller displays a splash screen. WHILE THE SPLASH SCREEN IS PRESENT, if both push-buttons are then depressed and held for 5 continuous seconds the system will enter the program mode. This will be indicated by the left screen shown below: 2) The configuration function consists of three screens, AUX FREQ, MAIN FREQ and EXIT. 3) The initial item selected on the AUX FREQ screen is the channel C4 Frequency. If it is desired to edit this, the left-inner (value after decimal point) and left-outer (value before decimal point) rotary knobs should be used. 4) If it is not desired to edit this frequency, the right inner knob moves this selection to the squelch value for the same channel, then the next frequency etc. 5) Sequential use of the knobs enables editing of all values on this screen. 6) After the squelch value of Channel C7, further rotation of the right inner knob will move election to SAVE. 7) Whilst SAVE is highlighted, pressing the Right-hand push button will cause all modifications made (which will all be highlighted prior to save), to be saved to the DF. 8) It is also possible to effect a save of an individual parameter by pressing the Right Hand push button after changing the parameter. If this is done, the changed parameter is immediately sent to the DF. NOTE: Changes to the DF are NOT made until either of the saving methods is auctioned. 9) If the Right outer knob is rotated clockwise, the selected screen changes to Main Freq (where the squelch levels in the main channels may be edited in a similar manner), and on further rotation the screen changes to Exit. Page 2-16 Publication No Section 2 CDF-992 Pilots Guide

28 10) In the Exit screen self-explanatory instructions are given that enable the user to save all is changes or abandon them before exiting. The examples shown below indicate (respectively) the Exit screen, the Exit screen if the Right push button is pressed, and the Exit screen if the Left push button is pressed. B.
