1.0 GENERAL 1.1 DESCRIPTION The 1U Radio Control Panel (RCP) was designed to remotely tune two (2) VHF COMM transceivers, two (2) VHF NAV/DME receivers, and one (1) or two (2) Air Traffic Control (ATC) transponders. The RCP tunes within two (2) VHF COMM frequency ranges. If a Collins VHF 22C is installed, the accessible frequency range is from (0) to (0) MHz in either 25 KHz or 8.33 KHz increments (switch selectable). If a Collins VHF 22D is installed, then the available tuning range is from (0) to (5) MHz in 25 KHz or 8.33 KHz increments from to , and in 25 KHz increments from (0) MHz to (5) MHz. The NAV/DME tuning range is from to MHz in 50 KHz increments. Being able to pre-select frequencies for both the NAV and VHF COMM modules provides the first level of memory. Ten (10) additional memory locations, or channels, can be accessed by pressing the MEM buttons. Audio volume controls with integrated power Off switches are included for both the VHF COMM and NAV modules. Other typical controls are: VHF COMM: Squelch On/Off, Test NAV/DME: Marker Sensitivity Hi/Lo, Test ATC transponder(s): Ident, Test, Normal /Standby/Lo, Altitude Reporting On/Off, and System 1 / 2 select The RCP has five (5) dual line, five and a half (5 ½) digit, Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) modules. These displays offer a high degree of readability in bright sunlight, and are backlit for enhanced viewing in low ambient light. The VHF COMM and NAV displays show two (2) lines of information. The top line shows the Active frequency, and the bottom line shows the Preselect frequency. The Preselect frequency is altered by turning the knobs accordingly. Once the desired frequency has been selected, it can be transferred to the Active display by pressing the Transfer button. The radio is tuned to the Active frequency. 02/14/2000 1

The RCP has an integrally lit, plastic panel which includes all pertinent nomenclature required to identify the function of each control and annunciator. Dimming is controlled by the aircraft 5 VDC dimming buss. The nomenclature is clearly readable in both low and high ambient lighting. The RCP contains five (5) independent radio control modules, one per radio, and each is similar in construction. All modules have a front panel which consists of a display, a frequency selector, and a number of control switches. Housed in an aluminum enclosure are three (3) or four (4) printed circuit boards (PCBs). The microcomputer (MCU) board is common to all modules. It performs the control and computational functions for each module, including all input and output tasks, and providing service to the radio. The power supply board is also common to all modules. Its main function is to derive power from the aircraft and convert it to those voltages required by the internal circuitry. This board includes input protection circuits to prevent damage that may be caused by lightning. There are two (2) types of boards that provide the radio interfaces. A parallel tuning interface board generates ARINC 410 output signals that are used to tune the NAV / DME receivers and the ATC transponder(s). The Collins CSDB (Collins Serial Data Bus or Commercial Standard Data Bus) interface board is used in the VHF COMM modules to serve as an interface between the module and a Collins VHF-22 (C or D) transceiver. 1.2 THEORY OF OPERATION All five (5) modules operate similarly, and have certain functions in common. These are described below along with unique functions only applicable to the specific module type. 02/14/2000 2

1.2.1 Frequency or Code Selection Rotary, optical encoders are used as frequency selectors. There are two (2) knobs, used to select the desired frequencies. The COMM and NAV modules MHz knob (large) controls the 1 and 10 MHz digits, and the KHz knob (small) controls the KHz digits. Only the Preselect display is affected by the frequency selector. Pressing the TFR transfers (or interchanges) the Preselect and Active frequencies. The radio is tuned to the Active frequency which is shown in the top line of the display. Variable rate tuning is used on the ATC module to allow faster selection of a four (4) digit code with two (2) knobs. The larger diameter knob selects the left two (2) code digits while the smaller diameter knob selects the right two (2) digits. The ATC module uses a single line display which is the active code, changed directly by the optical switch and tuned to by the transponder. The transponder is not tuned until three (3) seconds have elapsed since the knobs were last turned. The NAV modules produce paired 2 of 5 codes per ARINC 410 for NAV and DME receiver frequency selections. The ATC transponder module provides a four (4) digit octal code selection scheme. VHF COMM frequency selection utilizes a serial, CSDB protocol Memory Store & Recall All five (5) modules contain non-volatile memory to store the last Active and Preselect frequencies selected prior to power down. (The ATC module has only one (1) line, the Active code.) These selected frequencies are restored onto the display and sent to the radio on the next power up cycle. The VHF COMM and NAV modules also store and recall 10 additional frequencies, or channels, in non-volatile memory. To change memory contents, press the appropriate MEM button on the RCP. The MEM button toggles between the Command and the Memory mode. When in the Memory mode, the TFR button acts as a toggle between the Memory Store and Memory Recall modes. The frequency select knobs control the lower display line. The Memory Mode starts in the Memory Recall mode with the stored frequency displayed in the upper display line and a reference channel number in the lower line. In the Memory Recall mode, any of the 10 stored channels (0 through 9) can be selected by turning either knob. The smaller or larger knob will increment or decrement the channel number between 0 and 9. In the Memory Store mode, (the memory channel number is in the upper display line, and its frequency is in the lower) the stored frequency of a selected channel can 02/14/2000 3

be changed using the frequency selector knobs. A time-out function is designed into the Memory Mode. If the frequency select knobs have not been turned or the MEM button has not been pressed after a delay of about ten (10) seconds, the display will default back to the Command mode Test Functions Five (5) test switches are located on the front panel of the RCP, one (1) for each module. The switches test the internal electronics, display, and the equipment being controlled. If the test is successful, all display segments will be illuminated for as long as the button is pressed. Indicators are also tested when the push-button is pressed Audio Volume Control The VHF COMM and NAV modules include a volume control. The volume control incorporates a power On / Off switch which powers both the module and its associated radio Other functions MKR HI / LO The NAV modules incorporate a two (2) position toggle switch for setting the HI / LO sensitivity mode of the Marker Beacon radio. IDENT This push-button switch, located in the lower center of the RCP, activates the ATC transponder identification signal. NORM / STBY / LO The transponder mode can be selected using this three (3) position toggle switch which is located in the lower center of the RCP. ALT RPTG - ON / OFF Select the altitude reporting mode with this toggle switch which is located in the lower center of the RCP. 02/14/2000 4

XPDR - 1 / 2 This toggle switch selects between two (2) ATC transponders if a second transponder is installed in the aircraft. The RCP is normally supplied with an attached Locking Mask that keeps this switch in the 1 position. If the aircraft incorporates two (2) transponders, this Locking Mask can be removed. SQ ON / OFF The VHF COMM modules incorporate a two (2) position toggle switch for switching the squelch circuitry in the radios On or Off. COMM FREQ / 25 This is a pull-to-unlock type toggle switch, which selects either the 25 KHz or 8.33 KHz tuning mode of the VHF COMM transceivers. The VHF COMM module displays show only two (2) active KHz digits in the 25 position and three (3) active KHz digits in the 8.33 position Lighting Control The plastic panel back lighting is controlled directly by the aircraft s five (5) VDC dimming buss. The LCD back lighting and the indicators are powered by the internal 5 VDC supply. The intensity of the LCD lighting and the indicators are controlled by the microcomputer after sampling the dimming buss. If the dimming buss voltage is less than 0.5 VDC it is assumed that the panel lighting buss is off. Under this condition, the display and indicators are set to full brightness. When the dimming buss voltage is greater than 0.5 VDC, the LCD and indicator brightness will track the plastic panel brightness Emergency Operation In case of a RCP, VHF COMM module failure which results in the loss of transceiver tuning control, the corresponding Collins VHF-22 (C and D) COMM transceiver will revert to the international emergency frequency of (0) MHz. 02/14/2000 5
