It seems that Spring and Summer arrived only yesterday and I cannot fathom where they have gone so quickly! Since the last issue of the Repeater we have participated in the Pinehurst Triathlon and the Aberdeen Sardine Festival. According to reports both were fun events and there were enough hams to make them successful. I look forward to hearing reports at the October meeting. Several weeks ago Raymond - KG4CPM, J - N4BRD and I went to Pittsboro to take another look at the ham equipment being sold as part of a silent key s estate. I bought a linear amplifier and several smaller items, and J bought an antenna tuner. Belle said Raymond had enough stuff already so he didn t buy anything this time. However, we did come back with pictures of the items that remain unsold (and they will appear in this issue of the Repeater). All of the equipment seems to be in good working order (so far as our examination could reveal), had been in the shack of a non-smoker, had original manuals, and most had the original boxes and packing material. That is indeed unusual. Please take a look at the pictures and consider whether one or more items would be a good addition to your shack. Now is a good time of year to do adjustments and installation on antennas that will hold you for the coming winter months. It is not too hot nor too humid and outdoor work in this weather can be very relaxing. However, watch for electric wires, be careful of heights and don t do something dangerous. By-laws reviewed in detail, changes considered and adopted. Old Business Moore County Fair wrap-up good success, much fun for all that attended, made many contacts. Jamboree of the Air, October Boy Scouts, Ms. Debbie D Auria, Boy Scouts District Council at August meeting requested our assistance, Jonathan Poverud and Mark Wehner to coordinate. Sardine Festival, Aberdeen Friday, October 12 Mark Galyean and Jimmy Brock to coordinate. Jim Johnson to have canopy, banners, table and literature available. ARES Set will be held at the Health Department November 3, 2012 at 9:00am - approximately 4 hours, focus on message handling. Everyone is asked to bring a 2m handheld radio, ARRL message forms, paper and pencil. Digital messaging to be handled later. Objective is to get all members comfortable using message form. 5 5 Disaster communications Occasionally Mother Nature teaches us a tragic lesson. One that can remind us that technology is not infallible. As the residents of Joplin, Missouri, learned of on the afternoon of Sunday, May 22, Hellish winds from a maximumstrength EF5 tornado touched down just east of the Kansas state line and blazed a 22-mile path of death and destruction through the town tearing the city s structures into mangled toothpicks and violently ending the lives of 158 people. The monster mile-wide twister caused catastrophic damage exceeding $2.2 billion and knocked out cell phone communications for days. After the storm passed, 1,300 people were identified as missing. A vast portion of Missouri learned a tough lesson not to rely on cell phones. While they re a great modern convenience, they may also be the first to fail when high winds crush cell phone towers and other infrastructure rendering them useless. When the cell phones stop working, ham radio can answer the call. Today s small amateur radios are incredibly advanced with dual-band transceivers that operate in the 70 cm (440 mhz) and 2m (144 mhz) bands FM. Some also receive NOAA weather radio. Most are reasonably priced though a FCC license is required for use. Unfortunately this incident was far from the first time. New York City, the morning of September 11, Terrorists strike the World Trade Center. New Yorkers and virtually everyone else in America rush to their cell phones. They called to report smoke and fire. They called to request medical help. They called to check in on loved ones. And many just called because they needed to talk to someone, anyone who would listen, about the horrific scenes they saw on TV. It didn t matter why they called, as much as the fact that everyone called at the same time. The phone system locked up. There was too much data flooding the network and not enough bandwidth. While some infrastructure damage could be blamed for the failure several cell towers and connecting land lines were indeed destroyed the real reason the networks failed was simply because they were overloaded. In the aftermath of 9/11, cell phone networks have been tested and retested and they routinely fail when consumer demands exceed normal levels. Industry representatives claim providers are installing additional towers and builtin network redundancy to handle the volume spike during crises. But Telecomm Analyst Gerard Hallaren paints a different picture. In a CBS News story he revealed that networks are typically only designed to handle 20 to 40 percent of traffic, which includes phone calls and data modes such as wireless Internet and text messaging. In the end, it may be business realities as opposed to technical or infrastructure limitations keeping cell networks lean and mean, susceptible to failure during extraordinary events. It s just economic insanity for any carrier to try to solve the congestion problem, Hallaren said, It s cost-prohibitive to build a network that could serve 330 million at the same time. A service like that would cost hundreds of dollars a month per subscriber and people are not willing to pay that much for cell phone service. The prudent individual always has a Plan B.
