6 Services, Retailers, Personal Data SAARF AMPS 2004: The question on improvements to the home has been changed to ask about improvements costing R1000 or more, not R500 or more. In the section on activities, an additional activity Hired a car has been included. Bought video games has been expanded to Bought video/computer games. Debit cards have now been included in the list of financial services. The question on access to accounts via an ATM, the telephone or the Internet, has been replaced with two questions: one asking about access to accounts via the telephone, and the other about access to accounts via the Internet. The question on investment in the Stock Exchange has changed to Stock Exchange/Security Exchange. In the travel section, there is an additional question on the number of air trips in Southern Africa taken for pleasure. In the list of large appliances, personal computer in home has been expanded to include personal laptop in home. There is a new question on which languages the respondent understands. For Diary flooding, basic personal demographics are obtained for each additional household member who is 16 years old or older. The question on home ownership has been re-arranged to ask first about renting, then ownership. This question has also been moved to immediately follow recording of the type of dwelling. The list of makes of cell phones has been updated to include BlackBerry and LG. The two activities on watch and jewellery purchases in the past 12 months now sets a minimum limit of R700 (previously R500). Two new questions have been added to establish at which outlets a) watches and b) jewellery were purchased in the past 12 months. A new service, Mzansi, has been added to the list of financial services. The list of financial institutions now combines 20 Twenty with Standard Charter Bank. There is a new question to establish at which stores small electrical appliances, household accessories and furniture were bought new in the past 12 months. The two questions on camera ownership have been combined into one question that measures 4 camera types, namely camera that takes film, digital camera, camera in a cell phone and video camera. The list of stores from which food and groceries can be purchased has been updated. 7 Eleven is now known as Friendly 7 Eleven. The list of stores at which clothing can be bought has been updated. Legit and Supermart have been added. A new question establishes at which stores women s, children s and men s shoes were purchased in the past 3 months. The questions on dependants have been expanded to ask about: - respondent s own young or unmarried children who are dependants - other dependants, who can be younger or older than the respondent The list of age groups for other dependants has been expanded in greater detail. A new question has been added to establish at which stores large appliances were purchased new in the past 12 months. Page 67
7 Services, Retailers, Personal Data A new question has been added to establish whether respondents work in the public sector (government), the semi-private sector or the private sector. The question on the principal purchaser in the household has been replaced with questions on who the decision maker is with regard to: - purchases of household appliances - holidays - purchase of motor vehicles - which financial and investment products to use or invest in The wording of the question on domestic workers or household helpers has been changed to define these as working for your household. Self- Completion Product Research and Activities Questionnaire SAARF AMPS 2004: Unbranded Product Category Section: A total of 58 unbranded categories are measured. Branded Product Category Section: A total of 32 branded categories are measured. Interests and Activities Section: Branded Products (FMCG) Section: For each product category a unit measure plus brand(s) used in relevant time period, and brand used most often in relevant time period is obtained. An additional question has been included to establish which brands of each product category would be considered in the future.
