Deploying the Promise of NLOS WiMAX Les Sparrey Director of NA Sales
WiMAX Coverage, Capacity & Affordability Superior Range More Throughput Much Lower Cost 2
Product Introduction
About develops high performance, compact, outdoor 4G base stations Coverage and capacity of a macro base station, in a small form factor Provides customers the lowest total cost of ownership: Can operate without or without an ASN-GW No Lock-in Uses standard Mobile WiMAX CPE Range of up to 24 Km/15 miles Simple all outdoor installation Available in licensed and unlicensed bands RUS accepted & made in the USA 4
Broadband Wireless Challenges (1/3) Most deployments are Non Line of Sight (NLOS) Trees, canyons, clutter, indoor penetration As antennas fade so does your performance! The solution is diversity. More antennas = more diversity d offers a single antenna and no diversity. Example: Greenway Communications in Iowa was only able to serve 4 out of 10 customers before using PureWave equipment featuring Smart Antenna functionality. Now they are lighting up 9 out of 10! 5
Broadband Wireless Challenges (2/3) Range Traditionally greater link budget = greater range. Not necessarily so for e Mobile WiMAX which limits a base station s range to 5 miles. PureWave has broken through that limit, allowing ranges up to 15 miles, link budget permitting!!! 16e then allows us to exploit its OFDMA technology to greatly increase UL link budget as well as simultaneous users. UL subchannelization apportions the channel to multiple simultaneous users (unlike 16d) and also allows them to concentrate their power into those subchannels (increasing link budget). Smart Antenna technology such as that deployed by PureWave also increases link budget on both the DL and the UL. 6
Broadband Wireless Challenges (3/3) Ease and Location of Deployment Rapidly rising data rate demands create the need to deploy more base stations closer to the users, in order to increase spectral re-use. This is not feasible using the traditional split-design macro base station approach of yesterday. A compact, all-outdoor, easy-to-deploy base station that can be flexibly mounted in a variety of locations is the solution. This approach also greatly reduces OPEX since it eliminates shelter and air conditioning costs. PureWave exploits a cutting-edge SmartAntenna architecture that allows us to achieve the power of a macro in a compact size. PureWave is allowing operators throughout the world to deploy fullpower base stations in places they could either not access at all, or that were limited to low performance pico base stations. 7
PureWave Solution - Pico Cost; Macro Performance Macro BTS Pico BTS High performance Scalability High cost Complex installation Limited performance Not scalable Low cost Easy to install In-door unit only PureWave Compact BTS High performance Scalability Low Cost Easy to install 8
PureWave Quantum 6600 Compact Mobile WiMAX Base Stations Green: As little as 150Watts in power consumption Scalable: 200 active users per sector Small Footprint: SoC based solution No Shelter or Air Conditioning Required: Fully integrated outdoor Base Stations Range & Capacity: Through Smart Antenna System 9

Summary of PureWave s Technology Advantage Smart Antenna System Beamforming More focused RF energy Creates superior range and capacity Increases performance in any environment Software Defined Radio (SDR): Over the air upgrades Operates Stand-Alone or with ASN-GW No ASN-GW Required Extended Range: Up to 15 miles Fewer base stations required 19
Smart Antennas: Increased Range Standard System PureWave System Energy wasted where not needed Shorter range / smaller cells More base stations needed More focused energy Increased range / larger cells Fewer base stations needed 20
So what does it all means? Capacity 2X X MIMO B Downlink SISO MIMO A/STC Theory 3dB MIMO B Theory 2X User distribution across the sector Beam Forming The optimal working point Maintain capacity where most users are. Add up to 7.78dB with 6 antennas plus Beamforming gain up to 7.78dB additional with 6 antennas. SISO MIMO A/STC BF Range 21
Value of improved range 5dB in a Non Line of Sight (NLOS) link budget calculation provides a 41% increase in range 1 Recall the formula: Area of a circle is calculated as π*r 2 PureWave's Range Increase % PureWave Cell Sites needed vs. competitor 41% 50% PureWave will require significantly fewer Base Station sites 22 22
Deployed in Over 25 Commercial Networks Supported Frequencies 2.5 GHz 3.5 GHz 3.65 GHz Dense Urban (Europe): 1.5 Miles with a USB dongle (3.5GHz) Sub-Urban AB Canada: Over 20Mbps (2.5GHz) Supported devices USB Dense Urban (C. America): 10Mbps at 4 Miles (3.5GHz) Indoor CPE Outdoor CPE NLOS Rural IA, USA: GreenWay 2.5GHz Broadband speeds up to 12 Miles 23
Stand-Alone Architecture
Economic Advantage Dramatically lower total cost of ownership Macro BTS PWN Compact BTS Shelter Cost $25K - $40K Not required Labor & Installation Cost $10K - $20K * $2K - $8K Site Lease Costs / month $2K - $3K $100** - $2K ASN Gateway/AAA Server & Installation/Configuration Cost $40K-60K Not required Total Cost Over 5 Years*** $195K - $300K $8K - $128K And you ll also save up to 50% or more on the base stations themselves * In some green field deployments cost can be dramatically higher ** PWN compact BTS can be pole mountable, making rent minimal *** Costs will vary greatly between markets and deployment scenarios 25
Summary of PureWave s Economic Advantage Lower Equipment costs: Customers can save 20% to 50% on base station costs Lower operating cost over 5 years: Is likely to be $195K more OPEX/CAPX Lower support costs: No Eco-System required therefore only base station and CPE to support 26
