Terminals need to support aggregation of frequencies below and above 6GHz to achieve 5G Requirement. * If existing networks (e.g. using 3G, 4G) are used for traffic offload, more than 300MHz is needed due to the lower spectrum efficiency of such networks. ** For theoretical calculation, the contribution of frequencies below 6GHz for 1Gbps experienced data rate is not taken into account. *** Based on theoretical calculation: Macro (below 6GHz) ISD = 200m, 6 small cells (above 6GHz) per sector, 2500 active user per km2, 3 MNO in the same area. 9

10 Key techniques to enhance capacity Antenna implementation and Carrier Aggregation Antenna implementation: 3GPP design target for terminals (under discussion): 4GHz: maximum 8 elements 30GHz: maximum 32 elements Increasing the number of antenna elements leads to a significant increase of the total antenna area. Support of 10+ bands for both below and above 6 GHz in a 5G terminal: antenna layout engineering is a challenge. x 2 x 2 Carrier Aggregation (CA) Inter-band carrier aggregation requires more transceiver channels which results in increased power consumption and cost Global harmonized bands and larger contiguous bandwidth will enable the terminal provide high capacity more efficiently 10

13 Efficient sharing frameworks Regulatory framework for 5G: Harmonized technical conditions, including preferred frequency arrangements Sharing and co-existence conditions Noting that The macro layer coverage will still play an important role in making 5G services available in wide areas including indoor environments Need for operational guidelines for spectrum sharing Support the implementation of the regulatory framework for the specific bands (high and low) Key principle: protection of existing systems as well as maximization of spectrum use and social / economic benefits to society need to be taken into account 13

14 Duplex Modes L-Band Support for innovative duplex schemes FDD TDD TDD 1. Channel reciprocity provides better support to massive MIMO 2. Unpaired assignments facilitate sharing with other services 3. Unpaired assignments facilitate countries in selecting specific bands within a certain range based on local circumstances Flexible duplex (TDD and FDD) are being standardized in 3GPP in order to adapt to traffic fluctuation while increasing the spectrum usage efficiency.
