DAS Control Rack (DCR) Figure 1. Active DAS Tray Application DAS Control Rack (DCR) Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) have played a significant role in providing coverage and capacity to in-building wireless communications. The proliferation of smart phones has grown the indoor DAS industry and now pushes this industry to develop equipment that can easily monitor and control the multitude of DAS installations. Passive DAS trays have been valuable components in conditioning BTS signals going to and from DAS Head End equipment. One function of a passive DAS tray is to split the duplex RF signal at the BTS into its simplex transmit and receive components for fiber transmission out to the radio heads. Also, splitting the duplex signal into transmit and receive components allows the DAS tray to monitor and individually adjust the uplink and downlink signals. Another function of the DAS tray is to attenuate a macro or small cell base station transmit signal (+27 dbm to +48 dbm) to a level acceptable to an active DAS head end, (typically 0 to +20 dbm.) Manual mechanical attenuators are provided in passive DAS trays to fine tune the installation. These attenuators balance power levels on both the transmit and receive signals. Levels are adjusted to accommodate loss in cable runs not anticipated in the original DAS design. All these features combined into a 19 rack mountable tray provide a neat, clean solution to DAS head end signal conditioning. Microlab 3
DAS Control Rack (DCR) (continued) Although passive DAS trays provide signal conditioning in an active DAS application, the power levels are static once installed. During system installation power levels are set with passive DAS trays to provide optimal signals coming to and from the DAS Head. Eventually system conditions change which can require further adjustments. Signal degradation can occur as a result of failing equipment or transmission connections. Also site power requirements can change as site capacity demand increases and decreases. Site visits are typically required to make the appropriate power adjustments or troubleshoot the system. Figure 2. DCC500-A01 DAS Control Rack (DCR) An effective solution is to monitor and control DAS head end power levels remotely. Controlling uplink and downlink power levels signals via a remote server or mobile device will increase site maintenance productivity by reducing or eliminating truck rolls. Microlab s Active DAS Tray, DCC500 Series, provides convenience of RF DAS performance monitoring and control (Fig.1). Figure 3. DCR User Interface Screenshot Microlab s DCC500 Series products provide both local and remote monitoring and control functions to optimize system performance. At the center of the active DAS tray DCC500 series is the DAS Control Rack (DCR) (Fig.2). The DCR is an active multi-channel device with programmable variable attenuators and RMS power monitors. The DCR provides all of the necessary components to monitor DAS power levels and adjust the variable attenuators. Access to the DCR can be made any of three ways: through the front panel keypad and LCD screen, through an Ethernet port for use with a computer/laptop, or via remote access through a modem/signal router or a site management system. Microlab 4
DAS Control Rack (DCR) (continued) Key Features of Microlab s DCC500 Series: Uplink and downlink signal level control and monitoring 8 simplex channels 4 uplink, 4 downlink 19 rack mount, 1RU Broadband, MHz 24/7 power monitoring with alarm Extended dynamic range to -90dBm for uplink channels Automatic Level Control (ALC) automatically adjusts attenuation to maintain optimal Tx and Rx signal levels. Web server with Ethernet interface accessible via PC or mobile browser Includes Battery Backup to maintain attenuator settings Front panel display with control Supports SNMP V3 User configured alarms Air interface independent The Microlab DCR is a cost effective solution for a number of reasons. Since the 1RU, 19 rack mountable tray is not a modular design there is no need for the added expense of a large chassis or separate power supply module purchase, especially if a number of the chassis slots will go unused. If site capacity requirements increase over time or if it is a large venue, additional Microlab DCRs can be daisy chained together. This is a cost effective solution to match current requirements or to grow systems as needed. Figure 4. DAS Control Rack (DCR) Interface Microlab 5
DAS Control Rack (DCR) (continued) Figure 5. DAS Monitoring Upgrade Solution The DCR, being a complete monitoring and control device, is an excellent low cost solution to upgrade DAS systems with existing passive DAS trays. No need to rip and replace installed passive DAS trays (Fig.5). Microlab s DCR can be installed and operated with any manufacturer s passive DAS tray. This is good news to equipment owners who are still amortizing initial capital expenditures. DAS head end remote monitoring and control features can be implemented with the least possible expense. DCR models with minimum features are also available. A monitor only active DAS tray is available for sites that do not require signal conditioning. These units can be used anywhere RF power levels need to be monitored such as existing legacy passive POI. Like the fully functioning DCR the monitoring features can be accessed locally or remotely. Another DCR model is the attenuator only DAS Tray. The programmable variable attenuators, (8 channels), can be adjusted locally or remotely. Microlab 6
High Power Point of Interface (HPOI) High Power Point of Interface (HPOI) Microlab s DCR can be used as a stand-alone DAS head end interface for low power or retrofit applications, but generally it is meant to work with Microlab s High Power Point of Interface (HPOI) modules. The HPOI attenuates and splits duplexed RF signals from high power base stations. Microlab s DCC Series of products have been developed to provide the widest choice of customized solutions in a common platform for delivery with very short lead-times. DAS site solutions vary greatly with multiple carrier frequency bands, base station power levels, MIMO/SISO schemes, connector configurations, and combining/dividing requirements. All of these options create quite a large permutation of different products. Microlab understands the needs of the customer to have a customized solution in a short period of time. Microlab has developed common DAS tray platforms and a component stocking program to specifically address these customer needs. The DCC Series is this solution. The line of HPOI products have been designed on this DCC Series concept. The HPOI products provide a high level of customization while meeting the short lead-time demands of a growing indoor DAS industry. Figure 6. DAS Control Rack (DCR) with High Power Point of Interface (HPOI) with front connectors Figure 7. DAS Control Rack (DCR) rear view showing high power ports. Microlab 7
High Power Point of Interface (HPOI) (continued) Microlab s HPOI trays can be customized by frequency bands such as 700 MHz LTE, 850 MHz Cellular, 1900 MHz PCS, and 2100 MHz AWS to name a few. Also, combinations of different frequency bands can be included in a single tray. For example a 4 channel HPOI tray can accommodate a 700 MHz LTE MIMO and 2100 MHz AWS MIMO configuration, or possibly a 700 MHz LTE MIMO with a 850 MHz and 1900 MHz SISO configuration. Indoor DAS deployments can use a variety of base stations. These range from macro cells that pump out 60 Watts of power to small cells on the order of ½ Watt. Figure 8. DAS Control Rack (DCR) Interface for 60W base station. Microlab s different HPOI models can accommodate the various power levels of the base station. Connector configuration for the BTS interface can also be customized, for 7-16 DIN or DIN, ( Mini-DIN ). Microlab s HPOI trays provide an added level of customization by providing front or rear access to the high power base station connections. So depending on the site access to the back or front of the rack the Microlab solution eases installation. Figure 9. 9 Spectrum Analyzer Spectrum Analyzer Certain venues require more detailed signal analysis. Microlab s Spectrum Analyzer modules can provide this high level of analysis. The 8 port Spectrum Analyzer is a spectrum measurement and analysis unit in a 1RU, 19 rack mountable. It is ideal for either local or remote monitoring of multiple feeds and carriers in DAS, cable or other wireless networks. The Spectrum Analyzer can function as an independent spectrum analyzer or can be easily integrated into a larger measurement network. Microlab provides two models, a 4 port analyzer, (DCC591), and a 8 port, (DCC590). The 4 port model is mechanically the same as the 8 port. This provides the flexibility of upgrading the 4 port to 8 by the use of a software key. This makes a cost effective solution for projects only requiring 4 ports of analyzing but possibly allowing for upgrading in the future. The Spectrum Analyzer uses state of the art digital technology and FFT to make lightning fast and accurate measurements. With a very low noise floor and large dynamic range, it is well suited to measure any type of satellite, cable, wireless carrier or DAS system spectral activity, including very narrow band signals, beacon signals, interferers, spurious signals, and for carrier monitoring applications. Spectrum Analyzer accepts all signals from 5 MHz to 3 GHz and input power levels ranging from 110 to +5 dbm. RBW varies from 1 Hz to 15 MHz. The Spectrum Analyzer can be connected to an external 10 MHz reference for improved frequency accuracy and stability. All data communications with the Spectrum Analyzer occurs via its built-in Ethernet port. It can be installed anywhere, occupying only 1RU in a standard equipment rack, allowing you to monitor up to 8 different feeds. Figure 10. DCC590 Spectrum Analyxer (Front Panel) Figure 11. DCC590 Spectrum Analyxer (Rear Panel) Microlab 9
Spectrum Analyzer (continued) The Spectrum Analyzer s powerful Graphical User Interface (GUI) is available using any modern web browser. No additional software is required. The GUI is very easy to use and operates like most traditional spectrum analyzers. It provides user-selectable colors for markers and traces, allows storage of multiple traces and provides measurement reporting. The Spectrum Analyzer GUI includes a built-in Carrier Monitoring function which provides notification via or SNMP of carrier measurements that exceed user-defined limits, offering you peace of mind that your carriers are operating as expected. The Spectrum Analyzer provides network access to all technical staff connected to the facility network or a corporate wide area network. This allows all technical staff the ability to monitor feeds and carriers at any time and from any location in the world using only a web browser. For integration into a larger measurement or carrier monitoring system, the Spectrum Analyzer can be operated via its built-in GUI or the user can create a separate user interface using the publicly available API. An SNMP status interface is also provided. Figure 12. Spectrum Amalyzer graphical user interface. Microlab 10
