1. Introduction The 8262 DECT handset is capable to detect Bluetooth Low Energy beacons. The release v5381 improves the management of low energy beacon. Upon detection of a beacon, the handset notifies this detection to an alarm server via a DECT base station and via a Call Server. The alarm server can trig some actions upon notification of the presence of the handset close to a given beacon or localize precisely the handset. Note: 8262 DECT handset means either 8262 DECT handset or 8262 Ex DECT handset in this document. 2. List of acronyms ALE: Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise BT: Bluetooth BTLE: Bluetooth Low Energy DECT: Digital Enhanced Cordless Telephony dbm: decibel-milliwatts Ex: Explosive environment RSSI: Received Signal Strength Indication NAP: Non significant Address Part of the Bluetooth Device Address UAP: Upper Address Part of the Bluetooth Device Address LAP: Lower Address Part of the Bluetooth Device Address 3. Recommended use cases 3.1 event Roundsmen: the person making the round has to bring his handset very close to each beacon (<20cm). For this scenario it is recommended to set the threshold to Minimum sensitivity and select the mode Notify when Entering. The constraint is to put the beacons at least 10m from each others in order to have time to notify the first beacon before entering in the proximity of the next one. Trig an action when going outside/inside the proximity area. For example stop a machine when going outside the area and allow the use of the machine when inside the area: The area is 2/3m around the machine. For this scenario it is recommended to set the threshold to Medium sensitivity, adjust possibly the beacon emission to increase the circle more than 2m and select the mode Entering and Leaving. 8AL90346ENAAed01 3 /8

Leaving a protected room: For this scenario it is recommended to set the threshold to Medium sensitivity and select the mode Notify when Leaving. Smart beacon assisted DECT geo-location: the alarm server stores the smart beacon notifications and in case of alarm the DECT geo-location (Location mode set to DECT ) can be assisted knowing that the handset was passed close to a BTLE beacon. For this scenario it is recommended to set the threshold to Medium sensitivity and select the mode Notify when Entering. 3.2 Location mode set to Bluetooth In order to improve accuracy of the geo-location when an alarm is triggered, the Location mode can be set to Bluetooth instead of DECT. In this mode the density of BTLE beacon has to be adjusted to have a good coverage. It is recommended to set the transmit of the beacon to - 12dBm and to put beacon at least each 5m or in each room of the office. In this mode the handset sends a message to the alarm server with the BTLE identifier when an alarm is triggered (man down, no movement, shock, emergency call, pull-cord). First a scan of the BTLE environment during 3.6s is performed and all the beacons in a radius of about 7 m are recorded in the handset and then the message containing the beacon BDADDR of the one with the highest RSSI is sent. If no beacon in the radius of about 7 m are detected, the four DECT bases with the highest RSSI levels are sent instead of the BTLE identifier. An alarm with location mode Bluetooth can be active in the same time than the Smart beacon event. The Smart beacon event is suspended during of the alarm call. The last two detected beacons, if any, will be notified once the embedded alarm call is finished. 4. BTLE beacon configuration Each beacon has a Bluetooth Low Energy transmitter. It broadcasts very short radio signals over the air containing unique location-specific data. For an optimal detection by the 8262 DECT handset in motion, ALE recommends to use connectable beacons and configure their advertising interval (or period) to 100ms. For the main uses cases described hereafter ALE recommends to set the beacon output to 0dBm typically for the majority of use cases or less (down to -12dBm) when there is an high beacon density. The configuration of the beacon is done by establishing a BT connection with this beacon. This is generally done by using a smartphone (iphone or Android) and installing the application developed by the beacon supplier. Some beacons are secured and connection with them can only be established by entering credentials (account login/password) given by the beacon vendor/supplier. Other beacons are configurable only during a short period of time (30mn for ex.) after putting them on. The battery level or battery voltage can be read by the smartphone by establishing a BT connection with the beacon. 8AL90346ENAAed01 4 /8

5. BTLE beacon battery life time The battery life time varies a lot depending on the advertising interval and slightly less by the selected output. From one beacon to another there are differences in battery life depending on the BTLE chip set used by the beacon supplier and the voltage conversion technique used. The battery life is directly proportional to the advertising interval. Bigger the interval is more the life time is important. For example a life time of 365 days at 100ms will be 3650 days at 1s. The battery life is modified by about a factor of two (1.5 ~2) between the minimum transmit (- 20dBm) and the maximum transmit (4 dbm). For the beacons compatible with several advertising types (i, Alt, Eddystone,..), select only one during configuration in order to optimize the battery life time. Note that the 8262 DECT Handset smart beacon notification will work whatever the advertising type. See the beacon supplier datasheet for an exact battery life time indication. 6. deployment The beacons are emitting in all the directions (they have generally an omni-directional antenna). As the radio signal can pass through doors or walls, place preferably the beacon in the center of the area to be covered or far from the door. When a beacon is put close to a door to detect the passage through the door its output must be reduced to about -12dBm to limit the proximity area around the door. Put preferably the beacon at 1m80 2m above the floor. They can be put close to a DECT base station. The 8262 DECT BLTE survey mode (accessible from the handset menu screen and entering *service*) allows to scan the environment of BTLE beacons. Each detected beacons are displayed with the following information: the RSSI level in dbm. the identifier (BDADDR) in hexadecimal format and in decimal three digits/hex format (the one sent to the alarm server). the beacon protocol. This survey mode can be used for the beacons deployment. Note that no notification is sent when survey mode is active, only the! Icon is blinking upon detection of a beacon. 7. BTLE beacon white list ALE is giving a white list of recommended beacons: NAO BlueSpot V3 from PoleStar Rad X4 from Radius Network i cell C from The s These beacons are Enterprise Grade Bluetooth with Long Autonomy. The beacon standard can be i (Apple ), Alt (Radius Network ) or Eddystone (Google ) technology. Note: The beacon standard is not important for 8262 DECT releases R100/R200 as only the identifier of the tag is detected. The additional data provided in the payload packet, which is different given the standard, is not interpreted. The beacons must have their advertising period and output configurable. 8AL90346ENAAed01 5 /8

DECT handset configuration The 8262 DECT handset Alarm settings allows to configure Smart beacon detection in the Location & Events menu. Notification Mode has to be set to Call to server to activate the Smart feature. In the Smart beacon Settings, the Detection mode can be selected between: Notify when entering (in the proximity area of a beacon). A notification is sent as soon the measured radio level of a beacon exceeds the detection sensitivity threshold. No notification is sent when the radio level goes under the threshold or re-entering again in the proximity area of the same beacon. A new notification will be sent only when detecting a different beacon. Notify when leaving (the proximity area of a beacon). A notification is sent when the measured radio level of a beacon goes under the detection sensitivity threshold. The delay to sent the notification is between 2s to 10s depending how far the measured level is from the threshold. If the handset re-enters then leaves again the proximity area, a new notification will be sent. Notify when entering and leaving (the proximity area of a beacon). A notification is sent when the measured radio level of a beacon goes under or above the detection sensitivity threshold. The delay to sent the notification is between 2s to 10s depending how far the measured level is from the threshold. There is an hysteresis to prevent multiple notifications. In the Smart beacon Settings, the Detection Sensitivity threshold can be selected between: Minimum (the handset must be very close to the beacon for a detection, see approximate distances in the tables at the end). Medium (see approximate distances in the tables at the end). Maximum (the handset can be very far from the beacon for a detection, see approximate distances in the tables at the end). In the Smart beacon Settings, the Live sending mode has to be selected to be able to sent notification has soon as the beacon has been detected. The Location mode setting allow to chose between DECT or Bluetooth location. When DECT is selected all the Location & Events (excepted Smart ) and all Alarms are localized thanks to the DECT RSSI level of the detected four highest DECT base stations. When Bluetooth is selected the smart beacon Events and all the Alarms are localized thanks to Bluetooth if the handset is in the proximity area of a BTLE beacon, else the handset is localized as in DECT Location mode. The location accuracy is linked to beacon transmit. In deployments using the Bluetooth location mode it is recommended to set the beacon transmit to -12dBm (distance about 7m to 20m from the beacon). 8AL90346ENAAed01 6 /8

9. Alarm Server configuration The BTLE beacon can only be used in conjunction with an alarm server. The alarm server must be configured to associate a identifier (Bluetooth device address BDADDR) to an action: location indication, alarm triggered, identifier coding: The Bluetooth Device Address (BDADDR) is encoded in decimal before being sent in a 3 digits/hex format (call to server) to the alarm server: - With OmniPCX Enterprise Call Server, the 18 first digits are encoding the BDADDR. BDADDR = NAP (2 bytes, 6 digits) + UAP (1byte, 3 digits) + LAP (3 bytes, 9 digits). For example the following 18 digits are received by the alarm server , the corresponding BDADDR in hexadecimal is = 78 E A With OmniPCX Office Call Server, the 12 first digits are encoding a partial BDADDR (NAP is constant for a same beacon supplier). BDADDR = UAP (1byte, 3 digits) + LAP (3 bytes, 9 digits). For example the following 12 digits are received by the alarm server , the corresponding partial BDADDR in hexadecimal is = xx yy A Note that the differences between the two call servers are due to their different capacity to carry extra digits during the dialing phase. 10. Limitation and Troubleshooting Multiple notifications while not moving: The beacon is using radio technology which is subject to interference (WIFI or other BT devices) and fading (due to multi-path propagation of the RF signal). The 8262 DECT Handset algorithm is optimized to cope with this phenomenon but it can occurs that a beacon is detected several time by a handset even if the handset is not moving. If this occurs to much time it is recommended to choose a less sensible detection threshold on the handset (ie chose minimum rather than medium or medium rather than maximum) or if compatible with the use case prefer the notification mode Notify when entering. no more detectable: beacons are ed by a battery whom life time is dependant of the output and advertising interval. With the recommended values (0dBm, 100ms) the battery life time is more than 1-2 years and can be up to 5 years when using best in class batteries. When the 8262 DECT handset is configured in mode Notify when Entering, be aware that two beacons must be present to be able to leave the first beacon proximity area and notify the entering in the second beacon proximity area. If a single beacon is used, it can be needed to go very far from it before to be able to be notified again the entering in the same beacon proximity area. When using the setting Notify when entering and leaving is selected, it is highly recommended that the beacons are sufficiently separated each other to avoid permanent notifications when located between two beacons. For example when using 0 dbm beacons and a handset threshold set to minimum, the beacons must be separated by more than 3m (according value listed in the table in the next slide for 0dBm and Minimum, the distance between 2 beacons must be >2 * 1.1m). There are not such beacon placement constraint when using the setting Notify when entering or Notify when leaving. The handset is able to send up to 5 Smart notifications per minute. When the handset is in audio communication, the beacon notification is delayed to the end of the communication. During the communication the handset stores up to 2 beacons detection. The two last are sent when the communication is ended. Warning For optimum reliability of the Smart feature, it is recommended to fully charge the handset every 24 hours. 8AL90346ENAAed01 7 /8
