1. Introduction Modbus connection is a high-level protocol for industrial networks developed in 1979 by Modicon (now Schneider Automation Inc.). It defines a request/response message structure for a client/server environment. Modbus runs over various data links i.e serial links such as RS-232 and RS-485 including its own Modbus network. The Modbus Transmitter has the capability to connect to several different kinds of Modbus devices to allow data to be retrieved via a modbus connection. Several different types of Modbus Devices are available; Schneider PM750 Schneider PM5100 Socomec Diris A21 Socomec Diris A41 Multicube Metering Panels etc The setup and connection of these devices to third party meters will require reference to the relevant manufacturer s installation documents relating to each device, as the modbus registers can be different depending on what is required by the customer. The Modbus Transmitter will be programmed according to its designated purpose that is confirmed during the ordering phase. 5 2. Applications On installations where exsisting meters have a unused Modbus Connection. Energy Monitoring Bill validation Sub-metering Where there is a available Modbus Connection at the chosen metering point and quantity and type of meter is confirmed, the Modbus Transmitter is capable of transmitting the chosen Registars from the meter into the Gateway reciever for remote monitoring. Examples (*where meter is capable) Kwh Import Kwh Export* Line Voltage* Phase Voltage* Amps Per Phase* Other registars may be available when the meter type is confirmed as the Modbus Transmitter can be programmed at the factory to accomodate many different senarios but is limited to what the chosen meter can deliver. 3. Safety This manual gives details of safe installation of Modbus Transmitter. Safety may be impaired if the instructions are not followed or the system is used in a manner not specified by the manufacturer. Labels give details of equipment ratings for safe operation. Take time to examine all labels before commencing installation. Safety symbols on the meter have specific meanings. Caution Risk of Danger Refer to Instructions Danger Risk of Electric Shock Safety may be impaired if the instructions are not followed or the meter is used in a manner not specified by the manufacturer. The Device contains no user serviceable parts. Field wiring and commissioning should only be carried out by qualified personnel, in compliance with applicable national regulations. E.g. National Electrical Code (NEC) for US; Canadian Electrical Code for Canada For further Information contact the manufacturer: Address: Invisible Systems, 9 Beetham Road, Milnthorpe, Cumbria, LA7 7QL Web: Invisible Systems Limited P a g e 5
Voltage Circuits Safety The Modbus Transmitter requires a Mains supply rated at 240v and comes complete with 13amp plug as standard. An adequate protection device must be available within the attached circuit to provide a safe means of disconnection. Caution Care should be taken when mounting and drilling holes in the designated cabinet as the cables present on the inside of the enclosure will need to be avoided When connecting to this type of meter the correct safety protocols for site would need to be followed when working on electrical equipment and reference to the particular meter manual will be required, it is recomended to contact a qualified electrician for this work Maintenance The equipment should be maintained in good working order. Damaged equipment must be returned to the manufacturer (or his authorised agent) for repair. The meter may be cleaned by wiping lightly with a soft cloth. No solvents or cleaning agents should be used. All inputs and supplies must be isolated before cleaning any part of the equipment. Invisible Systems Limited P a g e 6
4. Requirements prior to Install. Information Needed from allocated metering positions. Meter Type/Model Quantity Circuit Names Modbus Address Registar Reads Required Confirmation of compatable Baud Rate Settings Confirmation of compatable Parity Settings The below table will need to be filled in prior to receiveing the Modbus Transmitter as it will be programmed to your specific requirements. This can be ed to you by Invisible Systems Ltd prior to equipment being sent. Ref QC0151. It is Advised that the maximum number of registar addresses on one Modbus Transmitter be 30. This Info will be used to set up your Realtime Online Portal by Invisible Systems Prior to installation. Invisible Systems Limited P a g e 7
5. Preparation Ensure the area you are going to be working in is clean and tidy. This includes any tools or equipment you have are stored neatly away so as to ensure there is no trip hazard. Find a suitable location for mounting the Modbus Transmitter. Clear of obstacles, on a flat dry surface not in close proximity to water. Also ensure there are no buried cables or pipe work close to a power outlet. Note It is advised that if where possible the Modbus Transmitter is fitted to a 5amp switched fused spur to ensure inadvertant disconnection from supply. Refer to qualified electrician should this be needed. Example below shows a Modbus Transmitter fitted to associated meters with a reciever in situe also Invisible Systems Limited P a g e 8
6. Correct connection of the data cables into the Modbus Transmitter from the Modbus Device. The data connection is made by three wires from the allocated Modbus Meters into the Modbus Transmitter, the connection of these cables is important as they are polarity sensitive and will not work if connected incorrectly. There is a label located on the side of the Modbus Transmitter showing correct orientation of the cables for connection. Under no circumstances should the cover be removed while the Transmitter is plugged in the available mains supply Under no circumstances should the Transmitter be mounted on any form of asbestos boards- Check asbestos register prior to any work commencing Example-Modbus Connections Modbus Transmitter As shown each meter is show as a slave, it is advisable that the last meter in the modbus loop be checked to see if there is a 120 ohm Termination Resistor present. This is more important where the modbus chain is approaching 100mtrs as the resistor helps clean the signal being sent by the meters to the Modbus Transmitter. The installation of the data cable between the Modbus Transmitter and the Modbus Device must be fitted in such a way that sufficient mechanical protection is provided as per IEE Wiring Regulations 17 th Edition Invisible Systems Limited P a g e 9
RS485 Connections The connection from the Modbus Transmitter (RS485) shall only be connected to low voltage (SELV) circuits. The maximum operating voltage for an RS485 network is 12Vdc. Cables with a minimum of 1 twisted pair + 1 single core with an overall shield should be used. A twisted pair should be used for network lines A(+) and B( ) and a single core or second twisted pair for 0V. Many specialist cables are available for RS485 but shielded CAT 5e cable (4 twisted pairs) may also be used. Cables running within the electrical enclosure may come close to high voltages and therefore must be insulated to the following minimum specification: RS485 Cables: UL 1015, 105 DegC, 600Vac AWG. 7. Examples of Metering Equipment that is compatible with the modbus equipment. Several different types of Modbus Devices are available; Schneider PM750 The Sequence below shows how to record/change the values in the meter. Invisible Systems Limited P a g e 10

8. Sensor Numbering Example Each sensor is supplied with a unique serial number marked on the side together with a barcode which is used to identify the sensor on the Realtime-Online dashboard. It is vital that these numbers are accurately recorded as otherwise it will be impossible to identify the sensor in ISL Setup or the server dashboard for the specific site. Note that a sensor number cannot appear twice on the same site, but can appear on more than one site dashboard. 9. Locating Sensors Realtime-Online Sensors use radio frequency communication to a local gateway. The distance between sensors and the gateway can also be very long (up to 15Km line of sight). However, environmental factors such as walls and furniture can reduce this distance considerably so optimal placement of sensors is important. Note that this document does not specifically cover the installation of Gateways which are covered in a separate document, (see index) but the following general guidance is given. When placing sensors, avoid the following: a. Placing the transmitter in metal enclosures such as a distribution boards. b. The transmitters are splashproof and are suitable for installation in outdoor areas, but are not 100% waterproof. Do not install them in positions where they are liable to be submerged. c. Do not install the transmitters close to other RF sources such as alarm systems, door openers or other radio systems. Although the amount of RF energy transmitted by the sensors is very small indeed, there is a possibility that they could interfere with other electrical devices, so they must not be installed close to other devices which could be affected e.g. medical devices or wireless alarm systems. Invisible Systems Limited P a g e 12
When siting the gateway, try to ensure that the location is approximately equidistant in radio signal terms from all the sensors. Typically, sensors can be expected to pass through 4 5 normal internal walls without difficulty. The following illustration shows how sensors which are hidden behind large metal objects like tanks or steel walls may have difficulty in transmitting to the gateway. Possible repeater location Notes Care must be taken when installing this sensor as live electrical circuits are usually within the vicinity. Seek to guidance of a qualified electrician if you are unsure. Invisible Systems Limited P a g e 13
7. Checking operation Following installation of the Pulse transmitter, it is suggested that the operation is checked to ensure the transmitter is being received by the Gateway. Open Ultra RF Gateway Setup This should be located on the desktop of your laptop. On first use, if requested, select the USB lead being used and highlight for use. Name lead connection and select it in drop down list Screen information being displayed. The Screen will show the transmitters it can see in range of the receiver, these can be sorted by sensor type or ID as per preference. Invisible Systems Limited P a g e 14
Each Transmitter will show the following 1. Sensor ID 2. Transmitter Type 3. Battery Voltage 4. Values being received 5. Signal Strength and frequency It is important to check all of this information to confirm that each sensor is being seen by the gateway and at regular intervals in relation to (5). Blue colour dots show direct messages being received and Orange colour dots show messages received via repeaters. Correct setup and operation of Realtime-online, will require all the Sensor ID s and Transmitter types in conjunction with the Gateway ID. The RSSI is shown in dbm with a bar chart showing signal strength. This is an important parameter. The table below shows dbm ranges in relation to Signal strength. The range shown above reads -100dBm this is shown in the table as a Marginal signal therefore will need improving either by reviewing the transmitter location, moving the Gateway closer or adding a signal repeater in between transmitter and receiver. Value RSSI Signal RSSI Signal Value dbm Strength dbm Strength Marginal Good Marginal Good Marginal Good Marginal Excellent Marginal Excellent 7-99 Marginal Excellent 8-97 Marginal Excellent 9-95 Marginal Excellent OK Excellent OK Excellent OK Excellent OK Excellent OK Excellent Good Excellent Good Further technical reference and product info can be obtained from associated data sheets Invisible Systems Limited P a g e 15
8. Meter Validation To confirm this meter readings will need to be taken at different intervals and entered into the meter validation page on Realtime-Online(tm). Check meter validation(reports>meter Validation) then pick sensor ID that is fitted Enter the reading obtained with date and time > Submit This will need to be done twice as a minimum to allow the Realtime-online software to check the readings. (the longer the time between reading the better the result). An initial check whilst on site can be done with a few hours between readings however for full and accurate calibration, ideally 7 days between readings is desirable (48 hours minimum). Click the two readings entered on the left of the screen and then Compare Readings the system will then work out and validate the readings being taken are correct. If the suggested pulse ratio is significatly diferent to the current Pulse Ratio the amend the Pulse Factor in Sensor setup to help aid in the calibration of the equipment. The more readings taken over time help prove correct operation. Invisible Systems Limited P a g e 16
