3. Planning the Installation It is important to ensure a safe method of working is followed when fitting this equipment. It is advised the appropriate PPE is used when mounting the Multi Input Temperature Logger and consideration of the surroundings to taken into account for safe operation and installation. As the temperature probes are hard wired caution should be taken to avoid trip hazards. 4. Locating Multi Input Channel Logger Realtime-Online Sensors use radio frequency communication to a local gateway. The distance between sensors and the gateway can also be very long (up to 15Km line of sight). However, environmental factors such as walls and furniture can reduce this distance considerably so optimal placement of sensors is important. Note that this document does not specifically cover the installation of Gateways which are covered in a separate document, (see index) but the following general guidance is given. When placing sensors, avoid the following: a. Placing the transmitter in metal enclosures (such as a distribution board, a fridge or a server rack). In these cases, try to locate the sensor head (CT, temp probe etc) inside the enclosure and lead the cable outside. b. The transmitters are splashproof and are suitable for installation in outdoor areas, but are not 100% waterproof. Do not install them in positions where they are liable to be submerged. c. Do not install the transmitters close to other RF sources such as alarm systems, door openers or other radio systems. Although the amount of RF energy transmitted by the sensors is very small indeed, there is a possibility that they could interfere with other electrical devices, so they must not be installed close to other devices which could be affected e.g. medical devices or wireless alarm systems. When siting the gateway, try to ensure that the location is approximately equidistant in radio signal terms from all the sensors. Typically, sensors can be expected to pass through 4 5 normal internal walls without difficulty. The following illustration shows how sensors which are hidden behind large metal objects like tanks or steel walls may have difficulty in transmitting to the gateway. Invisible Systems Limited P a g e 6
Possible repeater location Notes Care must be taken when installing this sensor as live electrical circuits are usually within the vicinity. Seek to guidance of a qualified electrician if you are unsure. 5. Preparation Ensure the area you are going to be working in is clean and tidy. This includes any tools or equipment you have are stored neatly away so as to ensure there is no trip hazard. Find a suitable location for mounting the Multi Input Temperature Logger. Clear of obstacles, on a flat dry surface, away from metal work, not in close proximity to water. Also, ensure there are no buried cables or pipe work close to a power outlet. Note It is advised that if where possible the 12 Channel Temperature Logger is fitted to a 5amp switched fused spur to ensure inadvertent disconnection from supply. Refer to qualified electrician should this be needed. Invisible Systems Limited P a g e 7
The Connection inside the Multi Input Channel Logger is shown below The Incoming 220v single phase supply connections are located to the left of the Unit and is internally fused at 2amps. When this work is completed ensure that the supply to the unit is isolated at the Switched fuse spur side while installation of the Temperature Probes is done via following the methods. When installation of the PT100 Probes has been done in either designated sensor pockets or locations ensure that the cable runs back to the Multi input channel logger safely fitted so as not to cause obstruction/hazard. The unit has the ability to monitor up to 12 individual PT100 Temperature inputs. Each 4 wire PT100 Probe needs to be connected to each input module as shown below. Input Channe 1 Channel 2 Channel 3 Channel 4 The Second and Third module follow on Channels 5 to 8 and 9 to 12 respectively. The above Unit shows connection of nine PT100 Probes. Should a module not be completely used the module will show an error but this doesn t effect its operational ability. Invisible Systems Limited P a g e 9
7. Checking operation. After installing the Gateway Receiver following the Associated manual see QC0140/QC0141 Open Ultra RF Gateway Setup This should be located on the desktop of your laptop. On first use, if requested, select the USB lead being used and highlight for use. Screen information being displayed. Name lead connection and select it in drop down list The Screen will show the transmitters it can see in range of the receiver, these can be sorted by sensor type or ID as per preference. Invisible Systems Limited P a g e 10
The info will show the following 1. Sensor ID 2. Transmitter Type 3. Battery Voltage 4. Values being received 5. Signal Strength and frequency It is important to check this information to confirm that the data from the 12 Channel Multi Input Logger data is being seen by the gateway and at regular intervals in relation to (5). Blue colour dots show direct messages being received and Orange colour dots show messages received via repeaters. All the channels connected with be sent via the one Transmitter fitted in the unit. Correct setup and operation of Realtime-online, will require the Sensor ID and Location name in conjunction with the Gateway to operate correctly. The RSSI is shown in dbm with a bar chart showing signal strength. This is an important parameter. The table below shows dbm ranges in relation to Signal strength. The range shown above reads -100dBm this is shown in the table as a Marginal signal therefore will need improving either by reviewing the transmitter location, moving the Gateway closer or adding a signal repeater in between transmitter and receiver.
