Fire Extinguishers located at Operator s station The Coil is current limited and is controlled by a Variac (power limiting control) The Operator has full control over the amount of power fed to the machine, thus controlling the discharged arcs. The high voltage arcs are controlled by the operator who is dialing up and down the power supply ( Variac) along with the the frequency and the duty cycle va their respective dials. The Operator also has the emergency kill switch. This kill switch disconnects the main power supply to the Coil. Tesla Coils have been used safely as a special effect in haunted houses and stage effects for decades. The Tesla Coil is not simply a special effect to create awe, but is actually integral to the songs it is utilized in, as it s played as a musical instrument directly through keyboard based MIDI controls. This occurs during 2 songs of our set list and for only a combined duration of a few minutes across approximately 10 minutes of songs within a 75 minute set. 6 Scaffold tower is 12 ft. tall (can be made taller in 6 ft. increments). Scaffold feet/castors will be insulated due to their rubber material. Human figure is 6 ft. tall with 8 ft tall outreached arm. Blue sphere is 8 ft. radius = the absolute maximum arc discharge from the center of the torrid due to the physics of the Coil s limitations. Humans will be barricaded away from accessing the scaffold tower structure via the IO Alter structure. A professional & licensed electrician will be hired to install a temporary, code compliant, 220V/20A circuit at the venue. (This is either provided by the venue via the Band Rider by the Band itself) They upper scaffold section will be fully insulated from the lower section via custom plastic insulator sections within the scaffold construction. The upper section of scaffold will be grounded to the Coil s main ground terminal which is ultimately routed back to the main grounding system that the electrical power is originally pulled from. Given these precautions, the Tesla Coil system as a whole creates no more risk than the same electric clothes dryer in one s home.

7 Voltage/Amperage: Voltage, especially high voltage, is always scary. We commonly think of voltage being the danger. In fact, it s the amperage that s associated with the voltage that is the real danger behind the electric current. To illustrate, let me use one of my favorite analogies for electricity: a flowing river. While not a perfect analogy, it provides a simplified view of electricity in a way we can all understand. If an electrical circuit is a river, voltage is the steepness of the river, while amperage is the amount of water that flows across a section of the river for some set period of time. So, if voltage is very high, but amperage very low, then a very small amount of water would be flowing down an extremely steep slope like a thin waterfall. If voltage is low and amperage is high, a large amount of water is flowing very slowly, like an almost-stagnant, yet wide river. If either voltage or amperage are very low, it s clear that the situation isn t dangerous. A tiny waterfall or a massive slow moving river probably won t do you much harm. On the other hand, if both are high (a large, raging waterfall, for example), it would indeed be very dangerous. Our coil is a high voltage, low amperage device. Operating on milliamps, or fractions of an amp. Electrical Arcs: The high voltage discharges admitted from the coils top load ( Torrid ) is a blue plasma arc of electricity. The arcs are from this coil are approximately 7 foot long. The high voltage arcs are controlled by the operator who is dialing up and down the power supply ( Variac) along with the the frequency and the duty cycle va their respective dials. The radius of these arc are controlled by Break Out Rods that force the arcs to discharge, for the most part, out of only 2 locations on the Torrid. These locations are placed along the largest barricade lines for maximum containment and minimum ability to reach audience members. Insulation: As part of the Tesla Coil s safety measures, the structure is insulated. Also, we ve provided insulated targets give the Coil something to arc to; the arcs will be brighter and last longer. The Coil is placed atop the insulated structure and sits over 16 feet from the Torrid s lowest point. Subtracting the maximum arc discharge distance of 7ft, audience members will be a minimum of 9ft the Coil structure. Additional barricading will quickly increase the distance of the audience members from the Torrid center, absolutely insuring that the audience is far from the maximum discharge capabilities of this Coil. Recent Local Performances: A Tesla Coil was used at last year's Hallowmass at National Western and for three consecutive nights at 3 Kings (a much smaller venue) in Denver without incident other than the flickering of some computer monitors in the basement office. POS stations were not affected. An onsite test demonstration can be scheduled in advance of the event to make sure no equipment on the premises is adversely affected by the RF of the Tesla Coil. Tesla Coil indoor use with confetti: Confetti is made from non/low conductive lightweight materials (tissue paper, mylar). The confetti dispersed will be free floating in the air (not grounded) so the Tesla Coil will not look to arc to them. The operator will be in direct visual observation of the Tesla Coil it s entire time. As a separate safety measure the coils operator can terminate the use while confetti is being applied. We ve used this same Tesla Coil in gallery shows and exhibitions in Denver for over the past 15 years. Our operators have had countless hours running this machine and understand it s safety concerns. We d be more than happy to provide a demonstration of its use.
