5 Background IMO The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations which is responsible for measures to improve the safety and security of international shipping and to prevent marine pollution from ships. The ownership and management of chain surrounding any ship can embrace many countries and ships spend their economic life moving between different jurisdictions, often far from the country of registry. There is, therefore, a need for international standards to regulate shipping - which can be adopted and accepted by all. The first maritime treaties date back to the 19th century. Later, the Titanic disaster of 1912 spawned the first international safety of life at sea - SOLAS - convention, still the most important treaty addressing the maritime safety. GMDSS Adopted by the IMO, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is an international system to ensure fast, automated alerting of shore-based communication, rescue authorities and ships in the immediate vicinity in the event of a marine distress. The GMDSS also requires ships to receive broadcasts of maritime safety information which could prevent a distress from happening, and requires ships to carry satellite emergency position indicating beacons (EPIRBs). Under the GMDSS, all ocean-going passenger ships and cargo ships of 300 gross tonnage and upwards engaged on international voyages must be equipped with radio equipment that conforms to international standards as set out in the system. Specific equipment requirements for ships vary according to sea area (or areas) in which the ship operates. The oceans are divided into four sea areas. Area A1 Within range of VHF coast stations (about miles). Area A2 Beyond area A1, but within range of MF coastal stations (about 100 miles). Area A3 Beyond first two areas, but within the coverage of Inmarsat geostationary maritime communication satellites. This covers the area between roughly 70 North and 70 South. Area A4 The remaining sea areas (the polar regions). 6 AIS ECDIS See around corners The JHS-182 AIS is a ship borne system capable of regularly broadcasting own ships unique information and continually receiving and displaying information broadcast from other ships. Ships within VHF range and equipped with an AIS transponder can continually receive and display information from other vessels. The AIS can see around corners, allowing avoidance of dangers before visual contact has been established. All ships information - including static data, such as ships name and MMSI, as well as dynamic information, such as position, course and speed - can be transmitted and received. 300 GT 5.7-inch display Small AIS transponder Easy operation with JOG dial Flexible installation approach Simple configuration Best choice for target distance ECDIS upcoming regulations New Passenger Ships >500gt New Tankers >3000gt New Cargo Ships >10000gt New Cargo Ships >3000gt Existing Passenger Ships >500gt Existing Tankers >3000gt Existing Cargo >50000gt Existing Cargo >20000gt Existing Cargo >10000gt JULY 2009 JULY 2010 JULY 2011 JULY 2012 JULY 2013 JULY 2014 JULY 2015 JULY 2016 JULY 2017 JULY 2018 Based on IMO Circular letter issued December Please check for the latest updates and news. 6 Navigation

TEF Developed exclusively by JRC, Target Enhancement Function (TEF ), allows target enhancement relative to the target size. The smaller echoes are far more enlarged, giving a better on-screen separation and identification. 10 Navigation

11 Radar Result of years of experience The radars developed by JRC play an integral part in the life of seafarers. JRC has a range of type approved systems available in either desktop and standalone versions. The choice of screens gives you complete flexibility on the bridge. Rotating scanner Typically, a cylindrically shaped array, horizontally fixed to a turning unit which for marine applications will rotate 360. Radar scanners come in many configurations depending on the size, speed and areas in which the vessels sails. For example, the speed of rotation for vessels travelling at less than 30 knots would be rotation per minute (rpm). For high-speed vessels, the rotation speed is doubled to 48 rpm. The physical size of the array unit can vary from 2 ft for leisure craft to 12 ft in respect of S-band radars fitted on large deep sea vessels. X-band? Or S-band? The marine radars are available in X-band and S-band frequencies. X-band operates at a frequency of approximately 9.4 GHz, while S-band operates at approximately 3 GHz. X-band offers greater resolution and detection of smaller targets, but is subject to interference from rain and seas. S-band radar has a longer range and less interference from rain and sea clutter, but has less sensitivity for small targets. A ship will typically use her X-band unit near shore, due to its higher resolution and ability to detect smaller targets, but depend on S-band while at the open seas. It is recommended for large oceangoing vessels to install both X-band and S-band radars. Navigation 11

12 Speed log Stable speed data The JLN-205 is a highly accurate ultrasonic speed measurement device using Doppler principles. 4-inch display Compact transducer Various display modes available Large characters for easy reading Highly reliable read-out < 50,000 GT Reliable read-out The JLN-550 provides highly stable ship speed information using two frequencies. Large characters for easy reading All-in-one transducer Dual frequency mode 4 beam transmission Dual or triple axis 50,000 GT Transducers JLN-205 The transducer is compact and constructed of light weight moulded rubber. It has been design to minimize the effects of aeration, which allows for stable and accurate operation. JLN-550 The all-in-one transducer allows for dual frequency transmission. The lower ultrasonic frequency measures ground speed and the higher frequency calculates the ships speed over water. Gate valve Both above speed logs can also be installed with a gate valve transducer which allows for long-term cost-saving and easy maintenance as dry docking is not necessary.
