3 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION Copeland's CR platform reciprocating compressors, introduced during the '80s, set the industry benchmark for ruggedness and efficiency across the globe. Different series of CR platform models evolved over a period of time, like CRKQ, CR5, CR, CR7 etc. to meet continuously evolving customer requirements and market needs. CR Manufacturing Plant, Atit India CRKM and CRKQM reciprocating models, being introduced by Emerson Climate Technologies and presented in this brochure have the most efficient, quietest and most reliable, full range of reciprocating compressors that are available today. Energy efficiency of compressors is a focus area of Copeland Reciprocating compressor Engineering team, to facilitate our customers meeting the MEPS (Minimum Energy Performance Standards) evolving in many countries, especially in Asia and the Middle East. This new series is based on the design of the widely popular CR platform and provides all the benefits of this successful product line, reaffirming the technology leadership of Emerson Climate Technologies in reciprocating technology. 18 PFV, PF1, AND PFZ COMPRESSORS MOTOR DESCRIPTION The PFV, PF1, and PFZ compressors use a single phase, permanent split capacitor motor. A run capacitor is required in order tperate this motor. A start capacitor and relay are not required in many applications. This motor, when used without starting components, is economical and efficient but has low starting torque. Therefore, the compressor with the run capacitor only is limited to use on systems where suction and discharge pressures are equalized (balanced conditions) prior to start-up. If the compressor is to be started at unbalanced conditions, or if increased starting torque is required for other reasons (such as low voltage), a start capacitor and relay can be added to this motor. NOTE: The run capacitors shown on previous pages do not have an identified terminal for wiring purposes as prior design run capacitors did. This precaution has been designed out of the capacitor. However, if a run capacitor with an identified terminal is purchased elsewhere and will be used, connect the identified terminal to the line (power) side of the compressor wiring (same as "R" terminal). Do not connect toward the start winding (or "S" terminal) side. MISWIRING CAN IMMEDIATELY FAIL THE SINGLE PHASE MOTOR A large percentage of single phase motor failures need not have occurred. Production and service personnel often do not realize how quickly fatal damage can occur if the motor is miswired. This quick damage usually occurs in the fine wires of the motor's start winding and is frequently caused by improper field installation of starting components. See Application Bulletin AE for more details on single phase motor miswiring and its effects. For film coverage see Emerson Climate Technologies International Video entitled "Miswiring Is Murder." It shows actual laboratory film of how quickly a miswired motor is damaged. After a compressor is wired, check and recheck that it is correctly done before the power switch is engaged. 1

40 COMPRESSOR SPECIFICATION The compressor shall be of two cylinders, with an internal start winding overload motor protector on all models. For maximum compressor life the compressor should include a minimum of 45 ounces (1.33 liters) of oil. The compressor shall be capable of operating on R22 refrigerant within the evaporating temperature range of -10 F to 55 F ( C to 12.8 C). The compressor must also be capable of operating at condensing temperatures up to 150 F (5. C). The compressor shall operate at an ARI point minimum efficiency of 9.77 BTU/W-hr. Efficiencies of better than 9.77 BTU/W-hr are acceptable, but efficiencies below 9.77 BTU/W-hr are not acceptable. The compressor shall be of the Copeland brand CR series reciprocating type or approved equivalent. APPLICATION NOTES Ÿ The CR series compressors include the features below that are important to every application. Ÿ Two cylinders provide smooth operation. Ÿ Aluminum piston/cast iron ring assemblies provide reduced reciprocating mass and positive pressure seal. Ÿ Centrifugal oil pump supplies positive lubrication to bearing surfaces. Ÿ External baked enamel finish prevents rust. Ÿ The motor protector used in the CR series compressors is mounted internally and its proven design is the result of extensive laboratory research and field testing. It protects the motor from maximum operating overload, both high and low voltage, and loss of refrigerant charge. It is both current and heat sensing. The single phase protector protects both the run and start windings. The three phase protector is wired at the connection point of the motor's three legs. Therefore, the protector protects all three legs and if a problem occurs with one or more of them, the protector breaks all three phases. Ÿ The rotational speed for the CR series compressors is: Ÿ 50 Hertz Ÿ 0 Hertz 2,900 RPM 3,500 RPM Ÿ The weight of the liquid refrigerant in the compressor shell that will cause an audible mechanical slug on startup is lbs. (2.7 kg). If system refrigerant charge exceeds this value, use a crankcase heater or other protective means. Ÿ The CR series compressors have the approval tperate as a heat pump within the approved operating range. Its increased bearing surfaces and improved lubrication system provide excellent reliability even when operated at the heat pump's higher compression ratios.
