3 What is telecommunication? q Telecommunication is the transmission of information over significant distances to communicate q In earlier times, telecommunications involved the use of visual signals, such as smoke signals and signal flags, or audio messages via coded drumbeats, lung-blown horns, or sent by loud whistles, for example q Today, telecommunications also include the use of devices such as telephones and radio communication systems, as well as fibre optics, orbiting satellites and the Internet 3

4 Pioneering work in telecommunications q First decade of the 20th century: pioneering developments in wireless radio communications by Nikola Tesla and Guglielmo Marconi q Marconi won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1909 for his work q Other pioneers: Charles Wheatstone and Samuel Morse (telegraph), Alexander Graham Bell (telephone), Edwin Armstrong, and Lee de Forest (radio), John Logie Baird and Philo Farnsworth (television), Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn (internet) 4

5 Course objectives q Introduce students to key aspects of digital radio systems, and fundamental principles that underpin these systems q Become familiar with aspects of compression, coding and modulation (i.e., the key building blocks of a radio), as well as of aspects of information theory that give insights on performance of the radio q Discuss applications and future trends of telecommunications 5

8 Learning outcomes On completion of this course the student will be able to: q Understand key concepts of random processes q Understand the basics of telecommunication systems, and in particular of wireless systems q Understand key concepts in information theory (e.g., entropy, capacity of channels) 8

9 Learning outcomes (cont d) On completion of this course the student will be able to: q Apply different compression techniques to data, and explain advantages and disadvantages of the different options q Apply different coding techniques to data, and demonstrate the types of errors which can be corrected q Describe and explain a number of analogue modulation schemes, and calculate bandwidth and power consumption of the different schemes 9

10 Learning outcomes (cont d) On completion of this course the student will be able to: q Describe and explain a number of digital modulation schemes, and calculate bit error performance under different conditions q Explain the trade-offs and choices that can be made in the design of digital radios q Explain possible applications and future trends of telecommunications 10
