2 RF POWER SWITCH Plug and Play Combining TX signals Plug and Play with RF POWER SWITCH The innovative RF POWER SWITCH from HUBER+SUHNER sets new standards and is the simpliest solution for switching between two RF channels. The RF POWER SWITCH family is a new product group designed for applications in mobile radio base stations. Thanks to the Plug and Play concept, switching is done automatically as soon as the mating connector is plugged in. RF POWER SWITCH connectors are used for combining two transmit signals (TX) to increase the coverage of the mobile radio base station. In addition, they simplify the installation of modules and the cabling of base stations. The RF POWER SWITCH replaces electronically controlled RF relays and allows simplified PCB layouts with a more compact design. This ultimately produces appreciable cost reductions. 3 Applications RF POWER SWITCH applications Wider coverage thanks to the combining of transmit signals (TX) The combining of transmission signals means that mobile radio base stations can now transmit further and more efficiently then previously possible. This approach reduces the amount of base stations required and contributes to reduced network costs. When applied in rural areas, the base station is operated under the combined mode and in urban areas under the non-combined mode. The RF POWER SWITCH switches automatically when cables are connected Until recently, electronically controlled RF relays were used for switching between RF channels. This method was both epensive and prone to operational failures. The mechanical approach of the RF POWER SWITCH however allows easy, cost-effective and reliable switching between the different RF channels. The RF POWER SWITCH can be applied for frequencies of up to 4GHz and continuous power ratings of up to 100 watts. Terminate unused receive channels (RX) The RF POWER SWITCH automatically terminates unused channels. This is accomplished by an RF resistor located directly onto the PCB. As soon as the cable connector is removed from the RF POWER SWITCH, the resistor will engage and all devices will be protected. This eliminates the need for eternal terminations and will prevent errors occurring from poorly torqued eternal connections. This virtually rules out system failures and eliminates epensive product servicing in the field. This concept is surprisingly simple and can be used in a wide variety of applications. For these reasons the RF POWER SWITCH is already being broadly deployed and successfully set in operation by many reputable mobile base station manufacturers. With the connection of an eternal antenna the signal reception can be improved. In order to prevent interference, the internal antenna must be deactivated. The RF POWER SWITCH automatically switches between the internal and eternal antennas as soon as the connection cable of the eternal antenna is plugged in. This greatly simplifies handling and helps to quickly establish good connections in field applications. The RF POWER SWITCH family is available with QN, QMA, N, TNC or SMA interfaces. A conducting sealing compound allows the RF POWER SWITCH to be electrically shielded on its semi-circular connector housing. Threaded and snap-type interfaces can be designed upon customer request. 6 Further developments Modularity opens up new fields of application Modular system The scope of applications for the RF POWER SWITCH is wide and varied and its modular design promises to answer many of the challenges faced by our customers today and tomorrow. Development efforts will continue on the PCB version and our aim is to produce an integrated RF POWER SWITCH adapter. Besides different interfaces, a wide variety of fiing options will be implemented to satisfy customer s specific needs. Interfaces currently available for the switching interface are the QN, QMA, TNC, N and SMA. Coaial ports are available with QN, QMA, TNC, SMA and MCX connectivity. The following table shows the possible combinations for the RF POWER SWITCH adapter. The product range consists of two basic types which can be etended upon customer request. The modular flanged design allows selection from a standard flange, a flange or a customised version. The flange is designed to ensure a protection of IP 67 in the mated condition.
