3 Straightness, Angle and Inclination Measurement Levels and Inclinometers Mechanical instruments with vial or electronic inclinometers take advantage of the earth s gravity to provide highly accurate readings of horizontal and vertical angles. The horizontal and vertical positions of the measuring faces on the housing allow form errors of the geometrical elements to be measured on the workpiece. For instance, straightness, flatness or position errors, such as deviations from parallelism or squareness can be measured. Depending on the type of level, readings may differ. Typical measurement outputs are: Inclination in / 10 in, respectively in / m. Radians in mrad. Angle in decimal output, e.g Sexagesimal angle in degrees ( ), minutes (') and seconds ("), e.g. 15, 30', 45". Application of two electronic Inclinometers in differential mode for the capture of the squareness errors on a machine tool.
