5 NDE at PNNL: Ultrasonics for Commercial Nuclear Power- Cast Stainless Steel (CASS) CASS piping is susceptible to thermal aging and embrittlement CASS microstructure makes examination of welds very difficult Low-frequency phased-array ultrasonic testing with advanced image processing can detect cracking in CASS piping weld specimens PNNL studies have been and are being used as the basis for ASME Code actions and providing a basis for rulemaking related to CASS examinations January 26,
