7 Exploring the Voltage Blooming Effect: Are You Rejecting Good Boards? What is Voltage Blooming? It is associated with the X-ray camera technology used in many real-time X-ray inspection systems. The effect occurs when the voltage is increased, causing the white area of the X-ray image to expand, or "bloom," and encroach on the black area. Thus, the same void that occupies less than 10% of a BGA solder bond at 57 kv may appear to consume up to 50% of the bond at 76 kv. Why is it important? Recent studies indicate that voids constituting less than 24% of the solder bond area may actually increase bond reliability. However, if void size appears to vary with voltage, assemblers who measure voids to evaluate BGAs cannot rely on measurements from X-ray cameras subject to the Voltage Blooming effect. As a result, they may be rejecting good boards, inflating both their reject rates and rework costs. eoe Glenbrook's patented X-ray camera technology eliminates the Voltage Blooming effect: when imaged at 50 kv and 70 kv, the size of the solder voids remains constant in relation to the bond area. oee eoe ee., e BGA solder bonds, imaged at 57 kvand 76 kv with conventional X-ray camera technology, demonstrate the Voltage Blooming effect: at higher voltage, solder voids appear larger in relation to the bond area. How can it be prevented? With the Glenbrook X-ray camera, the only system of its type not subject to Voltage Blooming. The technology of this camera ensures that void sizes remain consistent in relation to the solder bond area as the voltage is increased. When void size is a critical element in the BGA X-ray inspection process, pass/fail decisions should be based on the most accurate and reliable source of data: the Glenbrook X-ray camera.
