Cable Release Macarthur Photographic Society, INC April 2018 Issue 293 From the Presidents Desk President Brett Atkins Hello MPS, What a great month it has been, and April also has plenty in store. We had a great March competition night judged by Nic Peters with lots of fantastic images. Congratulations to Diane Mulley who took out "Image of the Night" with an amazing portrait called "Douk - The Book Seller". The Camden Show was another success for MPS with many of our members receiving awards in all the different categories and the highlight was our own Bill Livesey taking out the "Best Colour Image in Show" and then going on to win the "Best Colour Image in the Southern Districts Show Society's". Congratulations and well done Bill. During March we also had a well attended Photowalk led by Eddie Lim to Wirrimbirra Sanctuary and the Dingo Sanctuary on Sunday 25th March. We look forward to seeing some of the great images from this photography outing. Lastly to complete the month we were privileged to have one of our outstanding club photographers give us an insight into his photography and post processing techniques. Thank you Tony Naumovski for a great presentation night which our members appreciated. Coming up in April our competition night will be judged by Tanya Du Toit a new judge to MPS and our themed subject is "Fences". Starting on the 16th April at the Narellan Town Centre MPS will be hosting an Exhibition titled "Local". We would like as many members as possible to submit images for the exhibition to Robert at our April Competition Meeting night. This month we have a workshop meeting planned for Wednesday the 18th April presented by Ian Clark and myself. The workshop will cover image editing software from Lightroom to other new packages available out there for post processing. Just to let everyone know our presentation meeting scheduled for Wednesday April 25th has been cancelled due to the ANZAC Day public holiday. Please also remember to submit your Camden Art Prize entries online ASAP, as entries will close very soon. Well a big month ahead coming up and I look forward to seeing everyone at our meetings and also being part of our April Narellan Town Centre exhibition. 6 March Presentation Night The March presentation night had Tony Naumovski talk on his photographic life. Tony started with a talk about his photography, then showed a very well put together slide show with some great music. He explained a lot of his in camera techniques, particularly with double exposure, as well as his post processing using Lightroom, Photoshop, Topaz and Nik Silver Effex Pro (black and white converter.) Tony is our Member Profile subject for this month, so a very good idea on Tony and his images can be found at page 9. Below are two images from Tony s presentation. Our first Photowalk/Photoshoot for the year was held on Sunday the 25th March. It was organised and run by Eddie Lim. Eddies report is below. Wirrimbirra Reserve and Dingo Sanctuary Photoshoot MACARTHUR PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY SUNDAY, 25 MARCH 2018 Seven members, including David, Pam, Jen, Chelsea, Lyn, Robert, turned up at the Wirrimbirra Nature reserve at 9 this morning. Contrary to rumours, the place was tidy and well kept and, for a gold coin donation, we were treated to a tour during which we were introduced to Warren, the feisty, senior citizen wombat as well as a collection of wallabies and two emus, named Thelma and Louise. And, best of all, we were given entry to the aviaries where we were able to photograph sundry parrots, a gang gang cockatoo and a tawny frogmouth, without the interposition of unsightly wire meshes in our images. Next, at the neighbouring Dingo sanctuary, a volunteer guide called Bob enlightened us with an interesting and informative talk on dingoes, their origin, diet, behaviour, and reproduction. It would appear that these Australia s apex predators are in danger of extinction from hunting and poisoning. The majority of the animals at the sanctuary are pure bred, in itself a rarity, due to crossbreeding with dogs in the wild. Some 40 of these animals are kept in clean, well maintained cages with high fences and given such exotic names as Guyra, Gunyah, Jarlie, Arlie, etc. They appear well fed and contented. For reasons unknown, they seemed not to like David Williams and on his approach became quite skittish and agitated! Jenny, Chelsea and Lyn were given the privilege of handling one of the friendlier dingoes which was brought out of the cages. Photography was encouraged. All in all, a morning well spent and hopefully, we will see a few images on the Club Comp nights in the coming months. Eddie Lim Page 6 April 2018

April Competition Night Our April competition night is on Wednesday 11th April. The judge is Tanya Du Toit. Below is Tanya s bio. Tanya Du Toit has been involved in photography for nearly two decades now and has been practising as a professional photographer for the last 10 years. During her involvement with photography there isn't much she hasn't photographed. Professionally, she has covered many areas including: *Weddings * Corporate websites and business interests * Model portfolios * Family Portraiture * Sporting events Tanya has presented many lectures and workshops showcasing her extensive skills not only with her Nikon D700, but also her talented use of Photoshop. She has studied intensely over the years, having completed a number of courses, most of those at the very reputable Australian Centre for Photography, Paddington. Her favourite photographic style could be described as dramatic portraiture, as she strives to create images that evoke an emotional response. The comment "that's a nice photo," is nowhere near good enough for this photographer. She strives to create images that jump out and grab you. The theme for the April competition night is Fences. The theme for the May competition night is Goodbye. Competition Entry Rules *Only current members can submit images. 10 April Member Profile The April Member Profile is one of our best Photographers in Tony Naumovski. Tony is the winner of many of our awards, including Top Shot of the year. Here is his profile. Tony Naumovski I joined MacArthur Photographic Society almost 4 years ago as a local resident of the area. Even though I' am no longer residing in the area I have kept my membership as I still enjoy the friendly atmosphere in the club where I can share my passion for photography and improve on my photographic skills. My initial interest in photography were purely in taking holiday/ family snaps on a film camera with no real understanding of the key elements such as shutter speed, aperture or ISO. However, this all changed with the introduction of digital cameras which made life a lot easier in terms of convenience and ease of carrying and digitally storing the images. During this period of my working life I was travelling around the world extensively and the point and shoot cameras were constant companions. In addition to capturing or recoding some memorable moments of my travels, my interest in photography grew tremendously. Eventually I invested in a DSLR system. I am currently using Canon DSLRs ( 5d Mark iv and 7d Mark ii). Basically, I like shooting anything and everything ie landscapes portraits architecture, wildlife, sports etc so my lens collection ranges from prime wide angle and portrait to telephoto mm including two prime lensbaby creative lenses. In recent years I also invested in a professional printer (canon pixma pro10) which in my opinion is money well spent as I like to print my images. Having gone through capturing and processing I feel, printing is the final stage of presenting the image. Printing presents different challenges ie selection of paper that best suits the image. This is one area I m working on enhancing my skills. In terms of software I use Lightroom, Photoshop, Nik Silver Effex, and Topaz impressions. Predominantly my post processing is done in Lightroom (well over 80%). I use PS for textures and blending images and silver fx to enhance the contrast on my black and white images. My preference is to use the camera as a creative tool as much as possible and one of the techniques is in camera multiple exposures. In this regard the Canon DSLRs have a number of available options. For example you can take as many as 9 images on a single frame. In addition there are 4 methods of exposing ie additive, average, lighten and darken. The last two being simulator to blending modes in PS. Typically I use three methods to achieve different results. 1) placing the camera on a tripod with nodal slider where I can create movement of stationery object by moving the camera in small increments to the left, right, up, down, forward and back 2) freehand moment of the camera whilst focusing on stationery subject/s. 3) camera on tripod where you have, for example movement of people and stationery building. Whilst this technique is not a path to the most beautiful images it does create some interesting patterns and abstract images. In many circumstances I save the images in my texture files where I can blend them with other images Page 10 April 2018

April Member Profile I constantly challenge my self not only in technically executing capture of the image but also in creating visually appealing image in post processing from what s normally a flat and unappealing image. This is made a lot easier with the availability of various software programs. However, I try not to over cook or over process the image to the point where it s no longer a photograph. Therefore, I feel the use of textures needs to be subtle in most cases but of course on many occasions I break this self imposed rule. One of the rules I try to apply when taking a photo is to look around on the side and behind the object of interest. Often I find that there are just as many interesting things to photograph behind the subject being photographed. This is typical in a group outing where we all rush to take photo of the same subject. Another method in post processing is to look within the image. In other words, what could be considered an average image may have elements of an image that pop out. In regards to this my process is to eliminate distraction and elements that don t add anything to the image. The methods of post processing and technique can be better explained visually form the two attachment of before and after of the top shot image for Working on set projects, I found, is a great way to improve your photographic skills. In the past I was involved with a number of fellow photographer in exhibiting under HeadOn photography festival which runs in Sydney every May. My chosen theme was industrial landscapes where I took the opportunity to express my skills with multiple exposures of Port Botany Freight Terminal with the intention to capture contrasting views of the ever changing environment. My current projects involve capturing reflections, rusty objects and odd shapes which I will post process into abstract images. Going forward my goal is to get involved in some thermal imagery which I most likely try and blend with normal photography. Having travelled to many countries, my favourite destinations are Iceland, Japan and Namibia. These countries are unique in their own way and I have had the fortune travel there and photograph some amazing scenes. Page 11 April 2018

April Member Profile Iceland is blessed with some fantastic landscape and Namibia in addition offers even more with seascapes, wildlife and people photography. Japan tops it all with their complex culture. In my view the three countries are photographers paradise. On my bucket list are Norway and Antartica and hopefully I get the opportunity in years to come. Here are a few more of Tony s images. I Hope this gives you some idea of my photography. I am more then happy to discuss or further explain any points of interest. Please feel free to contact me. Thank you Tony. Page 12 April 2018

Photography Tips, Reviews and News Bruce Wallace Newsletter Editor Colour toning of Black and White Images. Colour toning is a method of putting a colour tone to a black and white image. Colour toning was first used in the film days using a colour toning solution that bleaches the photographic paper to remove the silver in the emulsion and then replaces it with a toned silver compound. This can only be done on black and white prints, not colour prints. With sepia toning the silver was replaced with silver sulphide (Ag 2 S), with selenium toning the silver was replaced with silver selenide. This toning can increase the archival properties of the print, or decrease it. Sepia, selenium and gold toning increased the archival properties of the print. Iron and copper toning decreased the archival properties of the print. Here is a run down on how this process happens. This attains to sepia toning. Obtained from the website Guide To Film Photography 1. Set out 3 plastic trays that are larger than the prints you intend to tone. One tray will be used to rinse the print, one will be for the bleach mix (refer to the manufacturer for dilution) and the last will be for the toner (refer to the manufacturer for dilution). 2. If the print you are using is dry, rinse it under running water for 2-3 minutes. If working in the darkroom, you can take the print directly from final wash and skip this step, but the print should be fully washed before toned. 3. Place the print in the bleach tray. The image on the print will slowly begin to disappear. When most of the image disappears it can be removed from the bleach tray. Typically the print will be in the bleach tray for 1-2 minutes. 4. Remove the print from the bleach and rinse it in water for about 3 minutes to stop the bleach. 5. Place the print in the sepia tray. You will see the image return. The print can be removed from the toner when it appears to be toned to the desired effect. 6. Remove the print from the toner and rinse it under running water for one minute to remove any excess toner. 7. Wash the print in water for minutes. The toned print can be washed with other prints in the darkroom. 8. Dry the print on a drying rack. Do not use heat dryers as they can cause defects in the toner. As you can see, a very involved process. Many chemical toners are highly toxic, some even containing chemicals that are carcinogenic. It is therefore extremely important that the chemicals be used in a well ventilated area, and rubber gloves and face protection should be worn when handling them. Now that we are in the digital age, the toning of our images are much easier and less dangerous. The toning is done digitally in a image editing program. I do my toning in Photoshop using the add on program Nik Silver Efex Pro 2. This process, in Nik, can tone your images with the toning colours, Split Toner, Selenium, Blue, Cyanotype, Coffee, Copper, Sepia and Ambrotype. Each colour has sliders to give a more or less tone shading. With the sliders you can very these parameters, Strength, Silver Hue, Silver toning, Balance, Paper hue, Paper toning. So, as you can see, you can have a toned black and white image in seconds as opposed to many minutes of messy and sometimes dangerous work. One of my sepia toned images. Done in Nik.
