Making quality as the first priority, we completed a filmless hospital in October Having been performing health care and administration under the filmless environment for one year, we investigated its economical effectiveness described as follows. The average completion period for a report was reduced to 2.0 from 10.7 working days. The number of persons necessary for film archiving room was decreased to 9 from 22, and this resulted in a cost-saving of 6 million NT dollars for each year. The cost of medical materials for radiology department was reduced 9 millions, and a space of 595 square meters was spared. A large amount of chemical agents for film processing was no longer needed, and the medical waste was greatly decreased. From implementing the filmless hospital, we have accumulated valuable experiences. The critical considerations include the correctness of patient's information, the image flow, the image missing and redundancy, the quality of display monitors, the condition of the network traffic, the prevention of data damages, the integration of various imaging modalities and computers, and the invasion of computer viruses. In this paper, we share the useful experiences to the hospitals that are building or planning to build a filmless environment.
