3 James Arterburn of Tulsa spent a morning trying to photograph the regal fritillary at the Tallgrass Prairie Nature Preserve in Osage Co., but they wouldn t land. He came back later in the afternoon and was able to get this shot. There are several mulberry trees in Tom Cummings backyard in Cushing, and in May the trees were frequented by cedar waxwings like this one. This silhouette depicting a successful deer hunt was photographed by Mike Lambeth of Edmond. 12 OutdOOr Oklahoma

7 Tom Cummings of Cushing increased the exposure setting on his camera by two-thirds of a stop to compensate for the brightness in the sky on this August day when he was photographing Mississippi kites near Perkins. 9 Joel Anderson of Choctaw said all it took was a trip to Falls Creek, a slow shutter speed and a beautiful fall day in Oklahoma. Falls Creek is located in the Davis area. Mike Fuhr had set up a blind early one morning on the Arkansas River near his home in Tulsa hoping to get some photographs of great blue herons. Instead, this kingfisher struck a pose for the camera. 13 Von Castor of Muskogee photographed this red-shouldered hawk in Tulsa County. Castor said the photo was taken after a night of heavy rain and that two hawks were feasting on crayfish in a bar-ditch along a fence line. Shelley Fowler of Boise City says she was taking her four dogs for a romp on her land three miles west of Boise City. As I stepped through some weeds on the rutted road, I felt something squishy under my right foot. It was the rattlesnake! She was able to step away quickly and even get off a few photographs. 22 OutdOOr Oklahoma

18 This small green tree frog appeared to be waiting for its meal when it was photographed at the Red Slough Wildlife Management Area near Idabel by Shelley Fowler of Boise City. These tiny frogs are barely more than an inch in length and the only part of Oklahoma where they occur is the southeast region. An unusual specimen for Oklahoma, photographer Lindell Dillon of Norman says this acorn woodpecker was first noticed near the headquarters of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in January of This is one of the only acorn woodpeckers ever documented in Oklahoma Annual Readers Photography Showcase 27

20 Diana Shores of Stigler noticed these on her pond that she had never seen before. 21 A cluster of bats in the Selman Cave system photographed William Caire, professor of biology for the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, during a research project in the cave. The bat species pictured is the cave myotis or Myotis velifer.
