Vernon Road Lithia Springs, GA Douglas County GPS Coordinates: N W Phone: From Atlanta: Take I-20W exit #44 at Thornton Road, turn south and go 1/4 miles. Turn right on Blairs Bridge Road. After 2 miles, turn left on Mount Vernon Road. Once you pass the north park entrance, drive past Cedar Terrace Road, Shelter #1 and the Office Bait Shop will be on your left. Continue South on Mt. Vernon Road, you will pass a big black mailbox with 1750 on it before you turn left on Factory Shoals Rd. less than a quarter mile south of Cedar Terrace Road and follow the signs to the Visitors Center and hiking trails. Taking Factory Shoals Road bearing right to the parking lot at the back end of the road between the Visitors Center and hiking trails. We will meet no later than 8:00 AM, so don t be late. Opportunity to photograph. Besides the mill 5-story ruins, Sweetwater shoals & rapids (up to Class IV+), Sweetwater Falls, bluffs overlooking the falls, a 215-acre lake, multiple trails ( 9+ miles) and canoe, kayak & boat rentals available. Bird and wildlife opportunities, see below. Annual events: Ruins and Rapids Full Moon Hike (September through December), New Manchester Days Festival and Arts & Crafts Show (September) and A Walk Through Time: Sweetwater Valley 75 Years Ago (September). Sweetwater Creek State Park is a peaceful tract of 2,549 acres wilderness only 15 miles west of downtown Atlanta. A wooded trail follows the stream to the ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company, a textile mill burned during the Civil War. Beyond the mill, the trail climbs rocky bluffs to provide views of the beautiful rapids below. Additional trails wind through fields and forest, showcasing ferns, magnolias, wild azaleas and hardwoods. Park rangers lead informative hikes to these areas throughout the year. The 215-acre George Sparks Reservoir is popular for fishing and provides a pretty setting for feeding ducks and picnicking. Four different trails, 9 miles, closed at dark. Biodiversity state park: Birds & Waterfowl over 30 species, Mammals over 10 species and over 25 different types of Reptiles, some VENOMOUS snakes. YouTube link: to see and learn about the park. Join GNPA at then register for our Field Trip. Group size: Maximum of 25 and minimum of 10 Fee: Cut-off date: Friday, August 29, 2014, 6 days before Field Trip outing. None needed. $5 parking. Annual passes available. As a senior and veteran, my annual pass was under $20. I highly recommend the annual pass as it is good at any Georgia State Park & Historic Sites. Travel & any meals are member expenses. NOTE: To get inside fence to Ruins, must register in advance and have Range accompany our group, would also necessitate additional fee of $5 per person. Inside fence 1 to 1 ½ hours. Concerning gear, you will want to bring your tripods, fresh batteries, memory cards, remotes or cable release, all lenses (think wide, normal and fish-eye for sure), and UV & Circular Polarizing filters. Mammals 12 identified species Beaver, Bobcat, Common Raccoon, Coyote, Deer, Feral Hog, Grey Fox, Muskrat, North American River Otter, Red Fox, Skunk and Squirrel. Reptiles over 25 identified species, including Brown Water Snake, Red-Bellied/Yellow-Bellied Water Snake, Northern Water Snake, Queen Snake, Brown Snake, Red-Bellied Snake, Eastern Ribbon Snake, Common Garter Snake, Smooth Earth Snake, Rough Earth Snake, Eastern Hognose Snake, Ringneck Snake, Eastern Worm Snake, Racer, Coachwhip, Rough Green Snake, Corn Snake, Rat Snake, Eastern/Black Kingsnake, Mole Kingsnake, Scarlet Kingsnake/Milk Snake, Scarlet Snake, Southeastern Crowned Snake.
