1 TRIP REPORT NEW JERSEY, U.S.A. 7 TO 14 FEBRUARY 2014 TONY DAVISON, RICHARD PITTAM, MIKE RICHARDSON & GLYN SELLORS DRAKE HARLEQUIN DUCKS, BARNEGAT JETTY

2 FLIGHT FROM HEATHROW TO JFK ( WE WEREN'T TOO IMPRESSED WITH THIS AIRPORT) I THINK PHILADELPHIA IS MUCH BETTER. WE TOOK THE SHUTTLE TO COLLECT OUR CAR FROM ALAMO WE UPGRADED TO A 4 X 4 MUCH MORE SPACE FOR 4 ADULTS WITH LUGGAGE. IT WAS ABOUT 2 HOURS' DRIVE TO OUR HOLIDAY INN HOTEL AT MANAHAWKIN THIS IS AN IDEAL BASE BECAUSE IT'S NOT TOO FAR FROM BARNEGAT JETTY. WE ALL HAD SEPARATE ROOMS BREAKFAST & EVENING MEALS WERE EXTRA, BUT VERY RESONABLY PRICED. BARNEGAT JETTY WAS EXCELLENT FOR DIVERS, SCOTERS, LONG-TAILED DUCKS AND, ONE OF OUR TARGET BIRDS, HARLEQUIN DUCK. IT WAS QUITE GOOD BIRDING AROUND THE CAR PARK SEVERAL HERMIT THRUSHES & GOOD NUMBERS OF CEDAR WAXWINGS. THE BEAUTY ABOUT THIS PART OF NEW JERSEY IS YOU DON'T HAVE TO DRIVE LONG DISTANCES TO DIFFERENT BIRDING SITES I THINK THE LONGEST WE DROVE WAS ABOUT 120 MILES IN A DAY. LIST OF NATURE RESERVES VISITED BARNEGAT JETTY EXCELLENT FOR SEA DUCKS IT'S APPROX. 1 MILE TO WALK TO THE END OF THE JETTY. CAPE MAY AREA EDWIN B. FORSYTHE NWR ( ALSO KNOWN AS BRIGANTINE ) JAKE'S LANDING HARRIERS & ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARDS IN WINTER ETC. AVALON ANOTHER EXCELLENT AREA FOR SEA DUCKS UP TO 3000 BLACK SCOTERS & SMALLER NUMBERS OF SURF & WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS. STONE HARBOUR NOT VERY GOOD IN WINTER ALTHOUGH THERE WERE 2 SNOWY OWLS PRESENT AT THE END OF JANUARY. NUMMY'S ISLAND HEISLERVILLE COX HALL CREEK YOU CAN COLLECT A MAP FROM THE VISITORS' CENTRE ON EAST LAKE DRIVE, CAPE MAY.
