BirdWalk Newsletter Walks Conducted by Perry Nugent Newsletter written by Jayne J. Matney Photo by Guenter Weber We do not remember days. We remember moments. Cesare Pavese In a time of fast moving choices, spontaneous decisions, quick analyses, and excellent or rotten timing, communing with nature, whenever you can, seems to be a great way to stabilize ourselves. Those moments among the trees, wind, and waters give you what you need. Sometimes those
moments cannot be defined only in one photograph. This week is a revealing of sequential photos that have been coming in. Enjoy. Always a sight to behold, the Osprey, as it soars, stops, and hovers for prey sightings. Photos by Guenter Weber Photos by Angie Bridges, Cathy Padgett, and Jo Frkovich respectively Growing up..

Parenting Lesson 101: How to play with sticks and make a nest Photos by Jo Frkovich This Barred Owl tip-toes through the water to find a spot, washes up, dries off and then proceeds to preen. Photos by Guenter Weber
Sibling Interaction. Hey, this branch looks like a cool lookout! Woah, cut that out! That s my face you are grabbing! Since ya ll are having so much fun up here, you need to share! Make room for me! Photos by Guenter Weber
Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength. John Muir Anhinga in the bright sunshine Photo by Erik Barlow July 30 th was a gorgeous day here at Magnolia Plantation. A storm had come through during the night, and sucked all of the humidity out of the air which resulted in a sunny, mild, and non-humid day. Two participants logged in 42 species.
Wood Duck in flight Photo by Guenter Weber Highlights of the Morning: 50 or more Wood Duck were seen on the property. It is a good time to see the adults and pre-adult birds of this species here after a productive spring. 2 Clapper Rails made the list this morning. They were located at the large impoundment. 1 Spotted Sandpiper was seen at the large impoundment just past the boat dock. 4 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds revealed themselves on this day. They tended to be around the blooming trumpet vines or crepe myrtle trees located all around the property.
Our Prairie Warbler pair is still visible along the large impoundment in the dike shrubbery. 2 Indigo Buntings were observed on the opposite side of the dike from Ravenswood Pond. Prairie Warbler Stare-down Photo by Ray Swagerty Other Sightings: Pied-billed Grebe, Anhinga, Least Bittern, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Little Blue Heron, Tri-colored Heron, Green Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Common Moorhen, and American Coot were all seen mostly at the large impoundment along the river. Osprey were flying overhead above the large impoundment looking for fish. Mississippi Kite and Laughing Gulls were flyovers. Later in the day, 5 Mississippi Kite were seen soaring on the thermals over the greenhouses and front parking lot.
A Red-tailed Hawk was seen but no Redshouldered Hawk made the list this time. Black and Turkey Vultures were seen circling high in the sky. Even though the Prothonotary Warbler Young Egret stretching its wings and the Parula were noticed Photo by Jo Frkovich to be missing this time around, the Eastern Bluebirds, Yellow Warbler, White-eyed Vireo, Common Yellowthroat, and Blue-gray Gnatcatcher were in attendance. In the woodpecker grouping, the Red-bellied, Downy, and Pileated Woodpeckers were accounted for. A Yellow-bellied Cuckoo was clearly heard in the Audubon Swamp near the cemetery. American Crow and Fish Crow were seen, along with the Common Grackle and Red-winged Blackbird. A noticeable no-show for this category was the Boattailed Grackle. Rounding out the numbers were the Mourning Dove, Carolina Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Wren, and Northern Cardinal. A surprise no-show was the Northern Mockingbird.
