1 Kamloops to Philadelphia and Back Road Trip July 28-August 26, 2018 My family and I travelled east during the month of August to visit with my wife s family based in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. We decided to do this via vehicle and small tent trailer, camping along the way. We stayed for one week in Grand Rapids and one week in Philadelphia. Obviously, nature exploration was not the purpose of the trip. Nevertheless, one cannot travel this far along these roads and not take in different wildlife and birds. This is the report of the nature side of the trip. Tent trailer and vehicle in travel mode Tent trailer set up at a campsite
2 The first paragraph of a report such of this is obviously about the distance travelled. In all, we did almost exactly kms in our vehicle. A quick google search reveals that this is the distance (as the crow flies) from Kamloops to the southern tip of South America one way. London, England to Beijing, China is listed on google as 8136 kms as the crow flies. If there was a perfectly straight road from western Europe on the Atlantic Ocean to east Asia on the Pacific, we drove the distance from western Europe to east Asia and half of the ways back. We camped for all but 8 of the nights in our trusty tent trailer. The weather in the eastern part of the continent was stubbornly humid which made for some sweaty set ups and take downs even though the temperature was in the low 20s. We also experienced more rain than usual in the east which hampered outdoor activities and made the ground soggy at times. I tried to do a short birding walk each morning at the different places we stayed but the weather played a major factor several times in keeping me in the camper. Still, it was possible to get out here and there to do some birding walks. Other wildlife was also seen on these walks or roadside along the highways. List of Campsites below for personal records: 1. Medicine Hat, Alberta: Gas City Campground 2. Whitewood, Saskatchewan: Whitewood Campground 3. Kenora Ontario: Rushing Rivers PP 4. Iron River Wisconsin: Twin Bear Campground 5.
