The prognostication of an early spring suggested in the previous Bulletin was verified by the exceptionally mild and clear weather throughout the month of March and up to about April 29. Apple trees then in blossom on the campus were about one week in advance of the average time of flowering May 2-4. Snow fell on April 30, checking and injuring the tender foliage of many trees like the tulip or belated maples where buds were but lately unfolded. Cold or wet weather has followed this period to the present time, May 9, so that the gains in most plant growth registered at an earlier date have been more than counterbalanced by the severe check received during the past fortnight. Nesting of Robin -----o----- Young Robin found under nest on Campus near Main Building of Adelbert College; estimated age 5 days; time occupied by building nest and laying eggs, 5 days (estimated); incubation, 14 days, total 24 days; date of beginning nest (estimated) April 15. Incubation begun in another nest, Noble road, build on crate, supported by brackets under eaves of Barn, May 3. This nest begun (estimated), April 29.
3 Youngstown (0) Vindictor, July 25, MIGRATION LIST OF BIRDS THIS CITY AND VICINITY DURING SPRING By George L. Fordyce. The following list is made up from my report of the bird migration for this locality to the department of biological survey at Washington. It represents careful observation during the migration season, as my records show that I was in the field some time each day from March 12 to May 16, with the exception of four days. In comparison with my list during the spring season of 1907, there are several species that were listed a year ago that were not observed this year. On the other hand, several species were listed this year that were new to the list for this Locality. This may be accounted for to a considerable extent owing to the fact that several species of water birds stopped over at the Struthers dam that heretofore have not stopped near here. On April 27, 68 species were listed; on May 12, 85 species were listed, and on May 24, 83 species. The night of May 11 was a migration night, and the morning of May 12, several new species were listed and all others were more common than any time during the season. I wish to give due credit to Rev. S.F.Wood and Professor E.A. Gilmore, who helped to make this record more complete than it otherwise would have been. The list includes 112 species, and while some of those listed may be observed at times during the entire winter, I am satisfied that this record applies to birds that were actually on their migration.
