3 Exif Features Exif records camera information and thumbnails when photos are taken using a digital camera. The first main feature of Exif is its ability to record camera information in an image file when an image is taken. For example, photographic information such as the time and date taken, device name, shutter speed, and aperture setting can be recorded along with such information as the compression mode, color space, and number of pixels in order to allow the correct reading of the primary image data. The second feature is the inclusion of thumbnails in addition to the primary image data in a single image file. The thumbnail size is specified as 160 x 120 pixels by DCF standard. 4 History of the Exif standard Exif, which was established as a standard of digital camera storage format, has been modified and expanded in keeping with the times as shown below. 5 Printing is optimized using information recorded when the image was taken. The digital camera records the photographic information set by the photographer (i.e., photographic parameters, photographic scene information) in the form of Exif tags together with the image data. The printer then accurately reads this photographic information using application software to ensure optimal printing. Various details recorded when the photo was taken can thus be obtained directly, whereas before such details were obtained through a process of estimation. Consequently, images can be obtained that faithfully reflect the photographers' true intentions.
