2 CONTENTS Description The Planar Film Duplicating Device (PFD2) has been specifically designed to safely flatten film that has been tightly rolled. The PFD2 holds curled film in place so that it can be duplicated without distortion or risk of film damage. All of the fabrication materials were chosen and additional tools designed for minimal handling of the film artifact. 5 3 PLACING FILM IN THE PFD2 1 Turn both Spring Fingers to the Open position. 2 Closed Open Unroll two inches of film out. 3 Open both Hinged Hold-Downs by holding the Knobs. The Teflon Spatula can be used to carefully slide in the film into the Out-Feed Guide. Slide the film strip (emulsion side up) on an angle into the In-Feed Fence and Guide. PFD2 with both Flaps open:

6 4 Slowly bring the Flaps down, holding the Knobs. Be very careful not to let the Flaps drop. 3 PLACING FILM IN THE PFD2 (Cont d) 5 Turn both Spring Fingers to secure the Flaps down. PFD2 with both Flaps closed: The Spring Fingers must be turned to the Open position before attempting to move the film across the PFD2. Doing otherwise could damage the film. Note: Should there be a need to tighten or loosen the glass Flap, it can be adjusted with the small wrench provided: Insert the small wrench into the Adjuster Screw, located in the middle of the Hinged Hold-Downs, and adjust accordingly.

7 4 WORKING WITH THE ENDS Weights can be used to hold the ends of the film down when duplicating. Carefully place the weight over the curled-up end of the film until it clicks into the weight s slit. Bring both weight and film down. There are two weight sizes. The Teflon Spatula s corners can be used to bring the film into a correct position in the PFD2 by gently pulling at a perforation at the film s end. The weights can also be stacked when needed.

8 5 DISASSEMBLY / CLEANING KIT Disassembly Cleaning Kit To disassemble the PFD2 use wrenches provided. There are two wrench sizes. Should the Lower Glass be removed, it can be done by removing the Fence and Guide assembles. To remove dust and dirt: Dustblower Soft brush To clean the glass: Lint-free cloth Non-abrasive wipes 50/50 Ethanol/H 2 O Gloves: Cotton gloves Nitrile gloves Finger cot

9 6 RECOMMENDATIONS It is strongly recommended to place the film emulsion side up in the PFD2 to reduce the risk of scratching or stressing the film. Bending a brittle film base, especially emulsion side out, can break the film. Placing the film emulsion side up implies flipping the digital image later on with the imaging software (Photoshop, Canon, etc.). The use of gloves is optional but its use is recommended to avoid fingerprints on both the film and the glass. Cotton gloves can leave fuzz behind and get tangled with broken film; nitrile gloves are a better option and allow one to feel the film. Be careful when handling the film as it will quickly spring back to its curled up form. The film will also curl back once it is duplicated. When transporting the PFD2 make sure that the Spring Fingers are in the closed position. Should the Flaps become loose, it is recommended to send the PFD2 back to George Eastman House Photograph Conservation Laboratory to readjust it. If there is a need to replace the Flaps make sure the Glass Flap Replacement s edge is smooth in order to avoid scratching the film. While working, keep the film dry and away from heat. Inspect the film before placing it in the PFD2: Identify the film base. Check the film for breaks, brittleness, dirt and any signs of deterioration. When checking the film for signs of deterioration or decomposition: Smell the film, check for a vinegar smell in acetate film or pungent odor (nitric acid) in nitrate film. Look at the color of the film base (fading or discoloration: yellow, amber, brown). Check for any signs of stickiness. Duplicate film after inspection. Clean the holder afterwards, especially if dirt or any decomposition signs were detected.
