1 Overview of Functions The digital microfiche/microfilm scanner allows to view, print and digitally convert library materials in these formats. The included software allows for near realtime viewing of the captured image, refreshing the screen as you scroll. Controls on both the viewing machine and the computer allow for either fast scrolling or fine adjustments, and the software delivers fine-grained control over contrast and brightness levels, focus, zoom, rotation, and image inversion. Settings can be saved between sessions to ensure identical image capture quality at a later date. Captured images can be selected, cropped, and sent to the public printer located in the South Information Commons, ed, or saved to a USB key. The video below demonstrates the features and use of the Microfiche/film scanner. The model shown in the video is different from the one at the library but the basic operations and the software are exactly the same. Location The microfiche/microfilm scanner is located near the front entrance of the library. When entering go to the right and you will find it along the wall just under the stairs. 2 Turning On Turn the power switch up (1) to turn on the reader. Microfiche Setup 1. Using the scanner s handle pull the glass place gently toward you. 2. Place the microfiche in between the glass plates. Adjust it so that the fiche is straight or images will appear skewed when eventually viewed on the monitor. 3. Using the handle push the glass back under the camera. Microfilm Setup 1. Please use the diagram on the reader to thread the microfilm roll. If you require assistance, please ask staff at the circulation desk. 2. The red and grey buttons located on the handle allow you to scroll through the film. The red buttons are for fast scrolling while the gray buttons scroll more slowly. Browsing Page 2 of 5

3 Note: it is not recommended that you use the Auto Focus button to automatically focus your image. 1. Using the scanner s handle, move the glass back and forth until you have a view of the contents. 2. Adjust the image by flipping/rotating it as needed. 3. Use the optical zoom in and out and focus in and out to adjust the image manually. 4. Adjust the image resolution by modifying settings under Adjust Image. Capturing Images 1. To capture the entire frame, select Full Frame at the bottom left corner. 2. The image that you captured appears at the bottom as a thumbnail. 3. To capture a selection, select the Addition Tool under the Cropping tab and draw boxes around the areas you would like to capture. 4. The Subtraction Tool can be used to remove a portion of this selection. 5. Once you have selected what you would like to capture, click on Selection in the capture tool bar. 6. A thumbnail of the selected image appears next to the capture tool bar. 7. Repeat process to capture multiple areas or pages. Printing Captured Images If you would like to print what you see on screen, then select Instant! Print under the Cropping tab at any time. You can also capture images first and then print them. 4 1. Under the File tab, select Print. 2. Checkmark the thumbnails you want to print. 3. Click Print. Saving Captured Images 1. Under the File tab, select Export. 2. Checkmark all the thumbnails you want to export. 3. Pick a suitable base filename for the saved files. The filename of each image will be the base filename, followed by a number. 4. Choose a save location (for instance, a USB key). Select the file format under Format. 5. Click Save. Page 4 of 5
