1 2016 Mason County 4-H Extravaganza Still Life Premium Guide Superintendent: Marilyn Brennan or General Information Still life entries will be accepted on Thursday July 28, 2016 location and times will be announced soon. Entries will be released at the conclusion of Extravaganza event on Saturday July 30 (approx. 3 pm). Be sure to read information regarding 3 x5 cards for each exhibit class. If required, they will not be judged as part of the exhibit, but they assist the judges in evaluation. Multiple entries per class are allowed, however, be aware that there are strict guidelines for number of entries allowed at our State 4-H Fair. 4-H Still Life State Fair Qualifiers will be announced during Extravaganza event. To qualify for 4-H State Fair 4-H members must have given a county level presentation and be documented as having an up-to-date record book. Unless otherwise noted, member must be enrolled in project area of their exhibit to be eligible for State Fair. Members enrolled in the Adventures in Family Living project will have their exhibits entered in appropriate corresponding classes. Division 1 Textile Arts 1. All entries in this division must be accompanies by a 3 x5 card giving the following information: Age of exhibitor, Number of years in project, and care instructions if a separate care label is not permanently attached to exhibit. 2. All quilt exhibits must be accompanied by completed form C1065E- 4-H Quilt Questionnaire. 3. Non-sewn items such as fleece blankets will be entered in general media craft division. Class 1- Non-Clothing Sewing items (pillows, accessories, etc.) Lot 1- Simple Lot 2- Difficult Class 2- Embellished items Lot 1- Any purchased or member made fabric item embellished by the member using a sewing technique. 3 x 5 card must state what technique was used. Class 3- Costumes Lot 1-Simple Lot 2- Difficult Class 4- Clothing Lot 1- Single Separates Lot 2- Coordinated Separates (two or more coordinating pieces) Class 9-Pieced, quilted wall hanging or home décor Lot 1- Simple Lot 2- Difficult 1

2 Class 10- Pieced, quilted wearable garment Lot 1- Simple Lot 2- Difficult Class 11- Hand or machine pieced quilt Lot 1- Small (Less than 2500 sq. inches) Lot 2- Large (more than 2500 sq. inches) Knitting & Crocheting: 1. Each entry must have a 3 x 5 card attached stating 1) name and age of exhibitor, 2) Title of project (i.e. Basic Knitting ) 3) Number of years in project 4) Care directions 5) for classes 17, 18, & 19 please indicate whether machine or hand knit. Class 17- Knitted accessories & decorative items- Lot 1- Knitted accessories (slippers, hats, scarves, etc.) Lot 2- Knitted decorative items Class 18- Knitted Clothing Class 19- Knitted Afghans Lot 1- Small- minimum size 1200 sq. inches maximum size is 2500 sq. inches Lot 2- Large- Minimum size is 2500 sq. inches Class 20- Crocheted accessories & decorative items Lot 1- Crocheted accessories Lot 2- Crocheted decorative items Class 21- Crocheted Clothing Class 22- Crocheted Afghans Lot 1- Small- minimum size is 1200 sq. inches. maximum size is 2500 sq. inches Lot 2- Large- Minimum size is 2500 sq. inches. Division 2 Foods & Nutrition 1. All entries must reflect knowledge gained from projects in which member is enrolled. 2. Alcoholic products are not to be used in any food product exhibit 3. Decorated cakes will be entered under applied arts division 4. No cream based or chiffon pies or uncooked products exception: cream cheese frostings and glazes high in sugar will be accepted. 5. Recipes are to be included for all exhibits in this class. Include exhibitor name on all recipe cards. Class 23- Food Product, cooked Lot 1- Quick Breads & Muffins- ¼ loaf or 4 muffins Lot 2- Yeast Breads & Rolls- ¼ loaf or 4 rolls Lot 3- Desserts- ¼ cake, ¼ pie, 4 cookies, tarts, cupcakes etc. Lot 4- Baked Item for special dietary needs (such as gluten or sugar free). Please enter appropriate amount or number of items for exhibit and explain nutritional information on 3 x5 card. 2

3 Class 24- Food Product, preserved 1. Processing methods and times must follow current Washington State University and USDA recommendations. Water Bath Canning methods must follow USDA or Ball Blue Boo recommendations. Pressure canned exhibits MUST follow current USDA guidelines. Recipes and processing times listed by the National Center for Home Food Preservation are approved by USDA. Website is: Due to potential presence of e-coli and salmonella in raw meat, an Extension-approved recipe using pre-cooked meats for drying is available from WSU Extension Office. Dried meats using this recipe will be accepted. 2. Recipes MUST be included in exhibit. 3. Bring dried foods in plastic food storage bags, providing ¼ cup of product. Complete label C0804 to accompany exhibit) 4. All canned products must be exhibited in standard canning jars, sealed with flat metal lids and screw bands/rings. Rings should be included in exhibit but must be able to be removed by judge. Minimum jar size on all canned products is 8 oz. (1/2 pint). 5. All canned exhibits must be labeled with C0803 (available online or from extension office. We ll have some labels available on entry day also. Please indicate hot or raw pack on label. 6. Exhibitor should indicate if lemon juice or citric acid has been added to any canned tomato product. Lot 1- Dried foods Lot 2- Canned Fruit Lot 3- Pickles, relishes Lot 4-Jams, jellies, conserves, marmalades Lot 5- Canned vegetables Lot 6- Canned meats, fish or poultry Division 3 Expressive (fine & applied) Arts 1. Each entry must be accompanied by a 3 x 5 card to explain what it is, where it is to be used, and what technique used (i.e. batik, copper tooling, etc.). 2. Each fine arts item in class # 25 (fine arts), and any other item intended to be displayed by hanging, must have a hanging device securely attached. 3. All exhibits entered in class # 26 (applied arts) Lot-4 must b non-machine sewn artwork. 4. Decorated cakes should be entered in class # 26, Lot 6. Class 25- Fine Arts Lot 1- Drawing (charcoal, pen & ink, pencil, other) Lot 2- Painting (watercolor, tempura, oil, acrylic, other) Class 26- Applied Arts Lot 1- Item made from kit Lot 2- Printmaking (relief, lithograph, screen, etc.) Lot 3- General media craft (clay, glass, metal, wood, leather, fiber, other) Lot 4- Needle arts (stitching, weaving, latch hook) Lot 5- Paper crafts (scrapbooking, cards, stamping, etc.) Lot 6- Decorated Food Arts (decorated cakes, cupcakes, cookies, edible food mixes, etc. Lot 7- Jewelry (all jewelry, regardless of technique) Lot 8- Poetry (written by exhibitor; must be either matted or framed; may include illustrations) 3

4 Lot 9- Performing Arts items (dioramas, displays, costumes, props, etc. made by exhibitor no notebooks. Lot 10- Handmade 4-H Project Equipment- Designed to allow 4-H members not necessarily enrolled in applied arts projects to enter their handmade equipment/items used in another project area (for example: tail bags, lead ropes, walking sticks, garden markers, dog beds, etc.) * Must include 3 x 5 card describing use, how made, and what was learned. Division 4 Photography 1. All entries must be taken by exhibitor during current 4-H year. 2. Photographs must be firmly mounted on matte board (not poster board). Minimum matt margin is 1 on all sides Maximum margin is 2 ½ inches on all sides. Back of photo must be covered by poster board if using frame matt. Framed or non-mounted entries will not be accepted. 3. All photos must be printed on photo paper. 4. Color enhancement and changes may not be made to original photo unless it is entered in digitally enhanced class. 5. Attach a completed WSU C0890 label to bottom of photo matt. 6. Entries in class 27, lots 1-11 must be either enlargements of black/white or color negatives or slides or digital captures not manipulated in any way. Photos must be 5 x 7, 8 x 10, 8 x 12, or 5 x 14. Scanned, laser, or manipulated digital copies will not be accepted. Class 27-4-H Project Photography Lot 1- Scenic Lot 2- People Lot 3- Animals Lot 4- Flower/Nature Lot 5- Buildings/architecture Lot 6- Any other subject Lot 7- Action Lot 8- Close Up Lot 9- Composition: Special lighting- (timed exposures, back lighting, etc. Identify lighting type on C0890) Lot 10- Composition: Design Elements (Lines, shapes, patterns, textures, special angles, contrasts, etc. Identify design element on C0890) Lot 11- Composition: Still Life (inanimate objects set up for photo) Lot 12- Composition: Abstracts Lot 13- Special Effects (note effects used on C0890) Class 28- Digital Imaging 1. Finished photos must be no smaller than 5 x 7 and no larger than 8 x Black/white photos must be done with gray scale. Color photos must be done with RGB or CMYK scale 3. Must be printed on photo paper. 4. Digital captures must be color corrected 5. All images may be sandwiched/cut & paste; retouched/cloned; filters or any other special effects used. 6. Original image must be part of display mounted on same board for comparison. 7. A typed index card must be part of display, explaining what was done to arrive at final image. Completed C0890 must be attached. 4

5 8. Display board must be no larger than 14 x Do not use dry mount use spray adhesive or adhesive mount only. Lot 1- Regular film & camera Digitally imaged by scanning, then manipulated & printed by exhibitor. Lot 2- Digital Capture Photo taken with digital camera, then enhanced/ manipulated and printed by exhibitor. Class 29-4-H Promotional Photos 1. Photos must be captioned. 2. Refer to general photography rules for information on matting. 3. Minimum size is 5 x 7. Maximum is 8 x 10. Lot 1- Community Service Lot 2- Activities/ Events Lot 3- Projects Lot 4- Leadership Development Division 5 Plant Sciences 1. Entries in Lot 3 should be exhibited with foliage intact. Vases will be furnished for display. 2. See EB1610 Suggestions for Vegetable Exhibits at Fairs and EB1103 Selecting, preparing and judging vegetables for information. Class 30- Garden/ Home grounds Lot 1- Vegetable Garden Lot 2- Container Garden (plants grown in containers ornamental or vegetable) Lot 3- Flower Garden Lot 4- Fruits, nuts, berries Lot 5- Other garden produce Lot 6- Cut or dried flower arrangement (need not be grown by exhibitor) Lot 7- Teaching display showing results of experimental vegetable, container or ornamental garden Division 6 Science/Engineering/Technology Class 30- Rocketry 1. Exhibits in lots 1-3 must have been successfully flown. A completed certificate of flight must accompany each exhibit. 2. Superintendent or judge will determine level of challenge for lots 1-3. If degree of challenge is already determined in Lot 1, please indicate that information on entry form. 3. Lots 1 & 2 require copy of exhibitor s plan/design sheet 4. Engines must NOT be in rockets for exhibit. Lot 1- Rockets built from plans other than kits. Lot 2- Rockets designed and built by exhibitor Lot 3-Model rockets from Kits Class 31- Woodworking 1. All exhibits must be accompanied by a 3 x 5 card describing item and use, techniques used, tools used, and what was learned. 5

6 Lot 1- Small woodworking project Lot 2- Medium sized project Lot 3- Large, intricate, or difficult project Class 32- Computer Technology 1. All exhibits must include 3 x 5 card describing item, how it was made, programs used and what was learned. Lot 1- Flyers/pamphlets Lot 2-Greeting cards Lot 3- Certificates Lot 4- Scrapbooks Lot 5-4-HClub Newsletter Lot 6- T-Shirt design Lot 7- Calendars, programs, etc. Lot 8-4-H Club Web Page Lot 9- Homemade Computer Equipment- Computer Tool Kit or Software Toolkit Lot 10- Digital art-(no smaller than 5 x 7 ). Class 33- Robotics Lot 1- Any item or display from Robotics project- Entry to include 8 ½ x 11 poster that informs public of use/purpose. May include pictures. Class 34- Environmental stewardship 1. Any display/exhibit from any project in the environmental stewardship/natural resource program or similar in subject matter. 2. Exhibits should be properly labeled, mounted, identified and classified where appropriate. Lot 1- Forestry Lot 2- Marine Life Lot 3- Energy Lot 4- Outdoor adventures (hiking, etc.) Lot 5- Any other Class 35- Shooting Sports 1. Targets are not acceptable entries 2. Firearms are not allowed as exhibits. Lot 1- Any exhibit from the riflery, pistol, shotgun, black powder/muzzle loading, archery, or hunting projects. Division 7 Social Sciences 1. Open to all members enrolled in Social Science Program Projects: Community Service, Leadership, Health, Entrepreneurship, Intercultural Class- 36 Lot 1- Display/exhibit from individual member Lot 2- Group/club entry 6

7 Division 8 Education & Misc. Activities Class 37- Displays Lot 1- Posters (14 x 22 minimum) Lot 2- Table display to fit 30 x 30 table Lot 3- Large Display Class 38- Primary Member Exhibits 1. Primary members will be interviewed upon entry and asked to describe entry and what they learned. 2. Please follow entry specifications in all project areas 3. Primary Ribbons (rainbow) awarded. Class 39- Public Presentations - You can sign up on day of Extravaganza Lot 1- Demonstration Lot 2- Illustrated Talk Lot 3- Persuasive Speech Lot 4- Power Point (Screen provided, however, member is to furnish Power Point projector) Class 39 (b)- National Equine Presentations (Senior level members only) This event is a qualifying event for State 4-H Fair 1. Open to Senior 4-H members only 2. High scoring blue ribbon presentation from each lot will be eligible for State 4-H Fair Contest 3. A complete copy of the rules for the National Equine Presentation Contest is available online at Lot 1- Individual presentation Lot 2- Team presentation (2) Lot 3- Public Speech Class 40- Record Books Open to all members enrolled with current year work Guideline follows the same order found on the inside front cover of the 4-H Record Book. Scorecard for evaluation of points is available at the Extension Office. 8 *Lot 1- Creative Art Baling Twine You must use baling twine to make your creation The creation should be usable. a 3 x 5 card must accompany the entry describing how the item was made and its use Maximum size of the entry is 18 x 18 x 18 While other decorative items may be used in the creation, it must be primarily made from baling twine *Lot 2- Creative Recycling Metal Cans Items must be made from metal cans. Other decorative items may be used, but the focus shall remain on the metal can Plants are not to be used as a part of any entry in this class The creation should be usable. a 3 x 5 card must accompany the entry describing how the item was made and its use All items are to be constructed by the member Maximum size of the entry if 18 x 18 x 18 *Lot 3- Creative Culinary Bar Cookies All entries made from scratch; items requiring refrigeration not allowed; entries containing uncooked eggs not allowed; Alcohol may not be used in recipe. Include recipe with entry Entry consists of four 2 x 2 bars *Lot 4- Creative Photo America The Beautiful Photos must be either 5 x 7 or 8 x 10 See 4-H photography section for mounting/matting instructions Photos must be captioned and printed on photo paper. Each entry is limited to one 8 ½ x 11 page Printing must be 12 point or larger (easily read font) or hand printed Illustrations are permitted, but must be contained within the one page Entries may be metered, free verse, haiku, or any other style of poetry Lot 6-4-H Extravaganza Photo Special Animal Photos Photo must be of an animal. any kind of animal Photos must be either 5 x 7 or 8 x 10 See 4-H photography section for mounting/matting instructions Photos must be captioned and printed on photo paper. Photo label C0890 must be attached. *Creative Kids Contests Lots 1-5 as indicated with an asterix are eligible for State 4-H Fair participation.
