Born in Paris in 1873, Louis Aston Knight, the son of American genre painter and expatriate, Daniel Ridgway Knight, spent most of his life and career in France. While he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris with Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Tony Robert-Fleury from 1891 through 1895, Aston Knight also received his artistic training from his father. His work departed from his father s as Aston Knight depicted pastoral landscapes usually without figures and began to incorporate elements of Impressionism that he learned from the paintings of Claude Monet. Knight s admiration for Monet s gardens at Giverny inspired him to plant his own garden and, purportedly, Knight offered prizes to neighbors with the best gardens, ensuring he would have beautiful floral surroundings to paint. Around 1925, Knight moved to California and painted views of San Francisco, Santa Monica, and the Monterey Peninsula. $30,000-50,

Although he studied both music and painting, Ball is best know for his naturalistic works of sculpture executed in marble and bronze. Beginning with renderings of musicians, he quickly gained success as a sculptor. His numerous works include the Henry Clay statue displayed in New York s Central Park and George Washington equestrian statue in Boston s Public Garden. Arguably the most important American Neoclassical sculptor Thomas Crawford is best known for his figural works executed in marble. Born in New York City, in 1835 Crawford left for Rome to study with Danish sculptor Bertel Thorwaldsen. There, he set up a studio where he received commissions from the visiting American tourists. Although he made several trips back to the United States, Crawford spent the majority of his career working in Rome. Although this piece is one of only two known marble sculptures of Adam and Eve completed by Crawford, he worked with this figural grouping for many years. Crawford s depiction of Adam and Eve reflected the mid-19th century revival of Christian art, however was unique in that it is one of the few 19th century American works that include both Adam and Eve (Eve appeared more frequently alone). Crawford created a plaster cast of Adam and Eve in his New York studio in In a letter he wrote to his friend Charles Brooks dated July 1843, Crawford writes that he chose this subject of Adam and Eve because he believed it to be, the most forcible expression of grief, that humanity is capable of. 1 Although this plaster cast stood over 9 feet tall, the arrangement was similar. A friend from Boston, William Gillespie, visited Crawford's studio in Rome in and described the pair. He writes, Adam clasps his hands in almost hopeless supplication, and looks to Heaven with a despairing, yet imploring glance of intense agony. 2 He says of Eve, she clings to him with feminine dependence her left arm is clasped around him, but her right hand is convulsively pressed against his eyes, so as to shut out the sight of the fatal apple which lies at her feet. 3 The only other known marble version which stands 54 1/4 inches tall, is dated 1855 and is in the collection of the Boston Athenaeum. The version in the Athenaeum was purportedly commissioned by Bostonian Franklin Dexter when he visited Crawford s studio in Rome in These versions reveal slight alterations. For example, the serpent beneath Adam s foot was removed and his loin was covered with oak leaves. 1. Although he was born and partially educated in the United States, Daniel Ridgway Knight spent most of his career in France. A plein-air and genre painter, Knight received his formal training at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA) prior to 1861; the École des Beaux Arts in Paris from 1861 to 1863, where he studied with Charles Gleyre and Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier; and the Academia di San Lucca in Venice. His best-known works depict young peasant women in floral landscapes with views of cottages in the countryside.
