Emile Gruppe was a prolific artist, producing many portraits, landscapes, and seascapes, however he is best known for his Impressionistic views of Rockport and Gloucester harbors. Gruppe studied with his father, painter Charles Gruppe, as well as George Bridgeman (at the Carnegie Art School), John F. Carlson (at the Art Students League), Charles Hawthorne, Richard Miller, and George Chapman. He was also influenced by the work of French Impressionist Claude Monet. While he incorporated elements of Monet s style, Gruppe developed a specifically American approach to Impressionism.
