2 The take off to our exploration with Art I would like to draw Attack I saw a yellow helicopter Painting is fun! Everyday these statements were heard from the children of Manyara class. Their keen interest in art gave rise to our theme: Art Attack To further enhance their skills and curiosity we planned intriguing activities which the children simply adored and they all had an amazing experience.

3 Linking our theme to Language, Maths, Social, Science and art Science: Talk about mixing colours Discuss sizes and shapes Feel different textures like rough, slimy, smooth etc. Talk about the colours found in nature How nature helps with art. Maths: Count colours around the class Count favourite colours Discuss shades: light/dark Counting different colours. Sorting coloured beads Compare leaf sizes Social skills: Working in groups Sharing ideas of techniques Field trips Art Attack Language: Discuss colours Talk about their favourite colour Sing songs on colours Discuss the items used and the products for different art activities Learn new vocabulary Art: Free painting/drawing Gooey painting Leaf printing Splatter painting Pasting Tennis ball prints Car tracks Magic painting Cards for occasions Block prints Hand and foot prints Bubble painting Pendulum painting Marble painting

5 Art Attack Language The children discussed about their favourite colours and sang numerous songs related to different colours. We also read various books about exciting colours. To name a few; Colors, Little Red Riding Hood and The Painting. The story time sessions and various art activities included different vocabulary like; bright, beautiful, dark, light etc. During snack time the children discussed the different colours of their lunch boxes and bottles. The children drew different shapes using different colours and discussed about colours seen in our surroundings.

7 Art Attack Maths During circle time, they decided to count how many colours they knew. The children saw the picture of the rainbow in the flash card on the class wall. They wanted to know how many colours the rainbow has and the colour names too. We counted the colours of the rainbow. We sang the rainbow song. The children counted their favourite colours which they saw around the class. They also sorted different coloured blocks. The children used the colour flash cards to match it to the clothes they were wearing.

9 The children counted the number of colours and the tyres on the toy cars. They also compared the size and shapes of the cars. Linking theme to report: Counts to at least five from memory Fills and empties containers (e.g., with sand or water Looks at two objects and identifies which one is bigger or smaller Identifies two geometry shapes (e.g., circle, triangle) Arranges objects in lines (e.g., row of blocks)

10 Art Attack During art activities the children discussed how mixing colours can create new exciting colours. They explored different textures such as sand, goop and gooey paint. The children experienced the textures and also explored different mediums. The children enjoyed leaf printing. They were excited to realise that they could give the leaf a new shade and colour simply by painting over it. Nature and science played a wonderful role during this session. Some of them made rainbow leaves. They discussed the different shapes, textures and sizes of the leaves. Science Texture rubbing The children were amazed to see how the textures rub off on the paper.

11 Feeling different textures Goop It was a great experience for the children to feel the consistency and behaviour of goop as it ran through the fingers. It was sticky, slimy and had a heavy feeling.

15 Art Attack The children gave each other exciting ideas and techniques to make their art piece extraordinary and amazingly special. They were very proud of their master pieces! Sharing and caring was a part of our free drawing sessions. The children happily shared the crayons, colours and other pasting materials. Through discussions, the children developed their social and emotional skills by expressing their feelings, ideas and thoughts verbally. They worked in groups as young artists. 17 Art Attack Field trip On the way... What a great and exciting field trip! We went to slipway in the yellow bus! During our drive to slipway, the children saw the blue ocean, green trees and counted the different coloured cars. They visited various stalls there and were thrilled to see so many types of art. We finally reached

18 The children excitedly looking at the beautiful paintings...

19 At slipway, the children went to the artists to have their names painted on beautiful name plates. They conversed with the artists and also observed how they work. All of the different colours and paintings!! We got to paint like real artists We loved it!!

20 After having their names painted, the children sat down to have lunch, listening to all the different sounds and gazing at the amazing scenery. They also shared thoughts, conversations, fun and excitement.

21 Art Attack Art Most of us instinctually know that art is important for our children; we simply believe it's important because we've seen our children deeply involved in art. But beyond what we feel and believe, there is much factual information about why art is important in our children's development that is both interesting and helpful to know. Creating art expands a child's ability to interact with the world around them, and provides a new set of skills for self-expression and communication. Not only does art help to develop the right side of the brain, it also cultivates important skills that benefit a child's development. But art goes far beyond the tangible statistics measured by studies -- it can become a pivotal mode of uninhibited self-expression and amazement for a child. Art matters the same way language matters -- or the way breathing matters! It is a fundamental component of what makes us uniquely human. Acknowledgement:

27 Pendulum painting Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The children observed the reaction of pushing the bottle back and forth. They discussed about the movement, the design and force of gravity. (Science)
