14 PART 4 THEMES Chapter 4.2 Spirituality and Art Art and Spirituality as Personal Vision Sometimes artists express the spiritual in a personal way using their own vision to portray spiritual ideas. The pre-historic artist may have been working for himself and/or a small tribe or family group where his message is personal or specifically meaningful to his clan. For the 19 th to date artist, personal expression is given full freedom to expand to include personal vision and truths-not just those deemed by society, religion or ruling power. 19 Diego Rivera s murals in the Lerma my water supply system in Mexico. Commissioned in 1951 its theme water, the origin of life on earth, features the architects and workers who built it. The murals depict a fertile body of water teeming with life. The female and male characters are submerged in water. They symbolize the roots of Mexico s population and are seen as rooted in the life. The fertility of the water and that of their bodies intermingle- each enriching the other.
