This year's show was juried by John Salminen when he was in town in September leading a great workshop at our KWS Brownsboro Gallery! KWS welcomed three new Signature Members this year; Pat Dispenziere, Judy Mudd, and Jane Stoddard. After the awards were announced, there was a wonderful dinner downstairs at Milkwood, a new restaurant run by Louisville s own celebrity Chef, Eddie Lee. KWS wants to thank Jim McArthur, Kathy Belcher, Marilyn Swan, George Gow, Ann Adamek, Lynn Christensen, Rebecca Braden, and George and Pat McCracken for helping with all of the details. Special thanks our many member cash sponsors, as well as our Corporate sponsors. This Exhibition would not have been possible without the generousity of our members and our community. Please support these businesses and convey your appreciation: Actors Theatre, Airfloat Systems, Canson Fine Papers (Arches), Creative Catalyst Productions, Daler-Rowney, M.Graham &Co., Don Preston Art Supply, Jack Richeson & Co., Savoire Faire/ Sennelier, Silver Brush Limited, Strathmore Fine Papers and Utrecht Art Supplies/Dick Blick. Dr. and Mrs. Maynard Stetten purchased "A Barn is Just Not a Barn" by Ratindra Das and the Louise Steinbock Family purchased "Lemons With an Old Pitcher" by Chris Krupinski. We are grateful for their support each year! We are already gearing up for Aqueous 2014 and are looking for more participation from our members and many more sponsors in order to keep this national exhibition going for years to come. If anyone knows of possible sponsors and would like to help, please contact Sue Hinkebein. Most important to the survival of the show in the future are your entries - so start painting now so that you ll have lots of beautiful paintings to choose from come Spring! Sue Hinkebein, Director Aqueous USA

2 A Letter From the President... Hello Art Friends, 2013 seemed like a whirlwind of activity. The biggest change, of course, was the move of our KWS Gallery & Studio to 4836 Brownsboro Road. If you haven't checked it out yet, then please do. It s a brighter and safer space with much better parking. We are excited about its potential to help us promote watermedia art in our community and to make the public more aware of our fine organization! On behalf of KWS, I am pleased to welcome Anna Marshall as our new Secretary for the Board, Rita Stout as our new Vice President, Judy Egerton as our new Communications Director, and Luci Mistratov, who will be working with Nevenka Martinovic as our Exhibition Co-Director. Mary Sue Klusman and Pat LeFevre are our new Gallery Directors. Charlotte Humphress and Susan Christensen will continue as our Education Co-Directors and Shirley Knoop has agreed to serve one more year as KWS Treasurer. In years past, Sue Hinkebein has taken on a significant amount of responsibility. This year she will serve as our Aqueous Director, a responsibility she took on last year while also serving as V.P. and Chairing the Castleman Statue Art Contest. We want to express heartfelt gratitude for Sue s selfless guidance and support of individuals new to the Board and the organization. Outgoing KWS Board members and many generous volunteers contributed countless hours to ensure our success. Administrator, Rebecca Braden, is doing a tremendous job keeping us organized and on top of things. Thank you, everyone! Remember, all these good things don't just happen It takes a lot of great people (just like you). Please join us! 2014 is the perfect time to get more involved. Tom Poole, KWS President A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FROM ALINE BARKER Aline Barker, our first KWS Master Painter (2009), Charter KWS Member, and beloved friend and teacher to many, has moved to Parkway Rehabilitation Center on Eastern Parkway (Louisville, KY), Rm 415. These books along with several of her paintings, will be available in the KWS Gallery Jan 28-Feb 28 during regular Gallery hours (Tues-Fri, 11am-4pm, Sat 11am-3pm). This sale is open to the public, as well as Ms. Barker s many writing and art friends. Prices will be reasonably set in consideration of small donations, all proceeds supporting KWS. Please come and join the fun, pay tribute to Aline, and support KWS in the process! Middletown Library Exchange Wednesday, March 5th, 9:15am Wednesday, March 5th at 9:15am is our Middletown Library painting exchange. Bring your watercolor paintings framed under acrylic glazing and wired for hanging. 3 2014 Workshops Karlyn Holman Watercolor: Fun and Free! April About the Instructor: Karlyn Holman is completely immersed in the world of art. She is a popular workshop instructor known for her enthusiastic, innovative, and fun teaching techniques. She is a world traveler who leads adventurous and instructional tours abroad. Karlyn has illustrated four children s picture books and is also the author of Watercolor Fun and Free, Searching for the Artist Within, and Watercolor - The Spirit of Spontaneity. She has been the owner of her own studio-gallery since About the Workshop: Watercolor Fun and Free is a motivational workshop for beginning as well as experienced painters. 4 Jeannie McGuire Watercolor Workshop: Figurative Design June 23-26, 2014 In Jeannie s Figurative Design Watercolor Workshops, she shares many aspects of her art with students. The workshop introduces her style and process. The four-day workshop allows for four versatile projects with time for experimentation. Workshop instruction focuses on creating paintings of people as works of art worthy of exhibition. Students will explore the interplay between the figurative subject(s) and their backgrounds, natural design in reference materials, size, shape and cropping impact, pigment maintenance, intentional and spontaneous marks, use of titanium white, and the freedom to change ones mind. For more information regarding any KWS Workshops or Educational opportunities, please visit our website or contact Charlotte Humphress, or charlottehumphress@gmail.com 2014 Mini -Workshop I hope everyone has had a nice Holiday season and is ready for some art fun. Susan Christensen and I have planned a KWS mini-workshop. It is tentatively set for March 15 th at 10 am in the KWS Gallery & Studio. The subject of this mini-workshop will be Zentangles, introduced to KWS members by Don Preston (Preston's Art Center) at our Fall General Meeting in November. Zentangles is a new style of doodling that uses very strong, easy to learn design principles. It s a fun, creative way to strengthen drawing, design, painting, and creative skills. Even many teens and preteens are discovering this fun activity. An enjoyable activity to do by yourself, it s also something fun people can do with one another regardless of age. We are inviting everyone interested to join us and to bring their children and grandchildren. Although this mini-workshop will not be geared toward very young children, there are always exceptions to the rule. Please sign up and I will send you the supply information. The cost will be $20 per person, and only $5 per young adult (under 18). Please pre-register so we can plan for supplies and snacks. Contact: Charlotte Humphress , charlottehumphress@gmail.com to pre-register or for further information. Also planned for 2014, a two-day portrait workshop taught by Judy Mudd. Watch for details on our KWS Website and in upcoming Newsletters. Of course, we are looking forward to seeing many of our members at our regular workshops this year, too. Look for more information on these week-long opportunities in this newsletter (pages 3-4) Charlotte Humphress, KWS Education Co-Director 4

5 Pat Hagan named 2014 KWS Master Painter Everyone in The Kentucky Watercolor Society knows Pat Hagan. She's a past president as well as having served on numerous committees over the years. Pat started her formal education at Parson's School of Design in New York City and it's European branches. She's worked in interior architecture and design here in Louisville as well as other places for over 50 years and several of us can attest to her unerring sense of color choices. I know she advised Cliff and me when we moved into our new house. And we simply love her ideas! Pat enjoys her close knit family who all came to support her the night of her Master Painter Award announcement. She is pictured (left) with several of her beautiful family members. An impeccable hostess, Pat earns our gratitude for her parties and casual get togethers. I remember one memorable occasion when her son and future daughter in law dressed up in tuxedos to serve us. Those present will not soon forget the groaning table full of shrimp and fillet of beef! The view from Pat's home on the Ohio River strikes one immediately upon entering her lovely art-filled home. Pat's sense of gracious living is evident to all upon arrival. She has her art, as well as the art of others, displayed on every wall. Her easel is always set up at the ready. Pat has a wonderful sense of humor. She's a master of puns and quick retorts. She keeps her friends laughing when they are with her. Perhaps Pat is best known as the organizer of the KWS plein air group. Brush with Nature is now known as the most active group of it's kind in Louisville. Since it's start, Pat has scheduled every meeting starting with a spring luncheon at her home. The last one featured salads and desserts made by everyone in attendance. None in plein air are intimidated by the critiques held after a session of painting mainly because, if Pat leads them, they are unerringly kind and helpful. She can zero in on just what a painting needs to finish it off. Sometimes she has little time to paint because of her duties as hostess of our group. But, those of you who know Pat, know that in the last 20 minutes she can knock off the start of something wonderful. Pat captures moods and moments in time as this makes her studio wherever she happens to be. In October of 2013, Pat won the Castleman Art Contest for her painting of the Castleman Statue. She is also a Signature Member of KWS. Her paintings hang in many private collections across the country. Pat is represented by The Jane Morgan Gallery here in town and the Red Studio in Greenwich, Connecticut. She is a valued member of many art organizations as she works in oil, acrylic and pastel, as well as watercolor. She continues to study with noted instructors anyplace she happens to fancy. Pat Hagan is a most valued friend and colleague... and now Master Painter of 2014! Tribute written by Connie Kuhn, KWS Exhibiting Member (pictured, right, with Ms. Hagan, at 2013 Aqueous USA Opening Reception, presenting the 2014 Master Painter Award) News From The Gallery Happy New Year To All, The KWS Gallery & Studio is looking great and little by little our foot traffic is increasing. Classes offered in the Gallery still have openings. Judy Mudd, , judy@judymudd.com, has openings on Tuesdays, 1-3pm and Luci Mistratov, , luciamist@hotmail.com, has openings in her Juicy Luci class on Saturdays, 10am-12:30pm. There are seventeen KWS members now exhibiting their work in the Gallery. If you re interested in becoming a Gallery member and exhibiting your work, we have space available for more artists. You may contact Pat Lefevre, , plefevre@bellsouth.net, or Mary Sue Klusman, , sueklus@aol.com, for more information. The "Life in Kentucky" Exhibit Opening on Dec 7th was a challenge because of the severe winter weather. However, we did have some courageous guests and dedicated art fans who braved the elements to come and see the show. In spite of the weather conditions, we even sold a few paintings. This exhibit closes soon, so if you haven t seen it yet, there s no time like the present. Participating artists will pick up their paintings Feb 28, 11am-1pm. Our next exhibit will be the KWS "2014 All Member Show" opening March 5th, with the Opening and Awards Reception to take place on March 8th, 1-3pm. This year s theme is Derby Time! Paula Knopf is Chairing this event. The Prospectus in this Newsletter has more details. We look forward to many of our talented artists participating. Reminder There is a Gallery Meeting and painting change scheduled for March 1st at 10am. Gallery members or anyone interested in Gallery membership should make every effort to attend. Pat Lefevre & Mary Sue Klusman, KWS Gallery Directors Opportunity Knocked & KWS Gallery Members Answered... During the September Grand Opening of our new KWS Gallery & Studio in Brownsboro Center, we received a visit from Laura Shaughnessy of Four Seasons Organic Foods, 4816 Brownsboro Rd (just a hop, skip and a jump from our new location). She made an offer to and a request of KWS Gallery Members that evening. She invited them to hang 8 or 9 paintings in Four Seasons retail store. KWS happily accepted and the art is hung. It looks great! Stop by and check it out and while you re there do all your organic shopping. Say Hello! on behalf of KWS to our great new neighbor and supporter of the arts! After you pick up the supplies for your upcoming feast, meander on down to the KWS Gallery to feast your eyes on more original artwork. We want to thank Ms. Shaughnessy and the owner of Four Seasons Organic Foods for this new venue. Four Seasons works exclusively with local growers of organic produce and other fine foods from KY and IN. Gallery Member Laverne Arkenberg says she can t wait to try their delicious fudge and she highly recommends their maple syrup! 5 5
