Page 3 Company History Legend has it that following a storm huge trees were blown down exposing large solid masses of black material under their roots. It looked like coal but it did not burn. Shepherds discovered that it was an excellent material for marking their sheep. Local people soon discovered that it was possible to write and draw with the lumps of graphite. Strips of graphite were eventually encased in wood to produce the world s first pencils. Katherine Tyrell A cottage industry quickly developed, culminating in the formation of the Cumberland Pencil Company in Production methods may have changed over the years, but today The Cumberland Pencil Company remains at the forefront of pencil manufacture with its world renowned brand of Fine Art Pencils, Derwent. 4 Inktense Pencils Page 4 Pen and ink offers strong, intense colour combined with a translucent effect. Now you can enjoy these distinctive qualities in an easy to use pencil. Inktense has a highly blendable texture and comes in a range of 71 jewel-like colours, plus a non soluble outliner which allows you to draw outlines that are permanent, even when water is applied. Angela Gaughan-Owens Apply pure vibrant dry colour then wash the pigment out completely to leave an ink-like effect. Once dry, the colour is permanent and can be worked over with other media. The possibilities are endless, the results stunning. Inktense Pencils can be used on fabric to create interesting silk paintings and stunning quilting projects. Derwent Inktense Pencils are available individually, in blister packs of 6, in tins of 12, 24, 36, 72, collections and special wooden boxes. 6 Inktense Blocks Page 6 These chunky Derwent Inktense Blocks bring a whole new colourful and exciting dimension to drawing and painting. They are extremely versatile and can be used wet or dry, on their own or with other media. They are also perfect for creating fine lines or broad strokes of colour. They combine beautifully with the Derwent Inktense Pencils and Outliner which are perfect for very fine detail and outlines. The blocks are ideal for loose, expressive landscapes and colourful still life. They can also be used on fabric to create stunning silk paintings and quilts. Nick Belshaw Fun accessories to complement your Inktense Blocks The Grate n Shake allows you to create paint and mix new colours in three easy steps. Add water into the container, grate the Inktense Block into the water and then shake the container to mix the pigments. Holding the Inktense block and dipping it into water can get a bit messy! The Derwent Grippers are the perfect way to keep the block secure and your hands clean. Linda Stevens Derwent Inktense Blocks are available individually or in assortments of 12 and 24. 10 Page 10 Aquatone Sticks Aquatone offers four times more useable material than a wood cased pencil. This solid stick of pure, water-soluble colour can be used wet or dry, and you can apply broad sweeps of colour in seconds. For even faster colour lay down, simply peel off the protective wrapper and apply Aquatone on its side. Aquatone will give you many hours of creative pleasure. Aquatone colours are the same as those in the Watercolour Pencil range so they complement each other perfectly. Angela Gaughan-Owens Available in 24 stunning colours that match the Watercolour Pencils range. Derwent Aquatone Sticks are available individually and in tins of 12 and 24. 13 Watersoluble Media Techniques Using your Grate n Shake Make a wash using a Derwent Grate n Shake and Inktense Blocks. Simply grate the colour you need into the container (example 1), add a little water and shake (example 2). Repeat for each colour required. If making several washes at once decant into a palette. Add just a little water for a strong tone and more water for a paler shade. Holding the Inktense Blocks in a Derwent Gripper avoids any mess on your hands (example 3). Page Create a Wash Example 1 shows how to lay a wash. Pick the wash up using a slightly wet paint brush and apply to the paper. Example 2 shows how to create a watercolour effect. Apply dry colour to the paper and then wet with a waterbrush to intensify the colour. Example 3 shows how you can lift colour direct from the side of the Inktense Block (using it as a pan) or the top of the pencil or stick For more techniques and hints & tips on the Derwent range, visit the Hints & Tips section at
Page 14 Watersoluble Media Techniques Applying colour to paper Example 1 shows how to apply colour direct to the paper using a block. The picture also shows a Derwent Gripper being used. Use the Inktense blocks on their edge for finer details and on their side to cover large areas quickly. Example 2 shows how colour can be put down on the paper direct from the tip of a pencil or stick. Example 3 shows how you can lay two or more washes over each other to blend colours together to create new hues. You can also mix colours in the Grate n Shake to create the colour you want before applying to the paper. Creating effects 1 2 3a 3b Example 1: use a Derwent craft knife to scrape white Aquatone over a wash. Do this while the wash is still wet. This effect is good for snowy scenes. Example 2 shows how to use a Derwent Fan Brush to suggest seaweed fronds or grasses. Apply the darker green once the lighter colour is dry. Lift the colour direct from the tip of the pencil, block or stick with a wet brush and then apply to paper. Inktense is permanent once dry making layering easy. Examples 3a & 3b shows you how to pick multiple colours up onto your brush. Lay your Inktense blocks side by side and run a wet brush over them. This is a great technique for quick coverage of several colours at once. You can also use this technique with your Aquatone Sticks. For more techniques and hints & tips on the Derwent range, visit the Hints & Tips section at
Watersoluble Media Techniques Creating effects continued Page 15 Example 4: creating a bubble effect. Use a Derwent Eraser Pencil to lift out colour from a damp wash. This technique is also great highlighting. Example 5 shows how to create texture. Use the stiff brush from the end of a Derwent Eraser Pencil, pick up some wet colour and flick over your drawing Examples 6: adding salt to a damp wash to create texture. Once dry, gently brush the salt off to leave interesting effects Example 7: a great technique for creating trees and grasses. Pick up wet colour and add to your drawing using the Derwent Stipple Brush. Example 8: using a craft knife scrap the Inktense blocks direct onto a wet surface. This is great for creating texture, such as pebbles, stones and sand. This technique will also work with your water-soluble pencils and Aquatone sticks. Examples 9 shows how to use a sponge to create a cloud effect. When the wash is still wet, use a sponge to lift off some of the colour. Techniques by artist, Jenny Hill. 16 Page 16 Project: Seahorses A step-by-step demonstration using Derwent watersoluble pencils, blocks and sticks by Jenny Hill Materials used: Inktense Blocks: Dark Violet, Tangerine, Sun Yellow and Iris Blue. Inktense Pencils: Dark Aquamarine, Burnt Orange, Vivid Green, Red Violet, Tan and Scarlet Pink. Aquatone Sticks: Dark Violet, Raw Sienna, Magenta, Light Blue, Kingfisher Blue, and Bottle Green. Watercolour Pencils: Rose Pink and Imperial Purple. Accessories: Derwent Grate n Shake, Derwent Grippers, Derwent Stippling Brush, Derwent Eraser Pencil, Derwent Craft Knife and Derwent Waterbrush (fine or medium). Thick, rough watercolour paper and no. 4 watercolour brush. Optional: Derwent Battery Eraser, Derwent Superpoint Sharpener (gives an extra sharp point) or Five-Hole Sharpener, small empty spray bottle, rock salt. Tip: synthetic brushes are ideal for this project as they will take lots of rough treatment. Step 1 Draw your design onto NOT or rough watercolour paper. Outline each element using Inktense pencils in appropriate colours then dampen each outline with a waterbrush and allow to dry. Once dry, the colour is permanent and will not run when other colours are applied on top. Tip: If time is short, speed up drying by using a hairdryer. For further inspiration & other projects to complete, please visit the hints & tips section at
Project: Seahorses A step-by-step demonstration using Derwent watersoluble pencils, blocks and sticks by Jenny Hill Step 2 Using the Derwent Grate n Shake; make two washes of different shades of blue with the Inktense blocks and/or Aquatone sticks. Apply the wash onto the background of your picture, using the lighter wash at the top. Before it dries, add fine rock salt to some areas for texture. With a craft knife, scrape on a little Dark Violet Inktense block or Aquatone stick. When dry, brush off the salt and any loose shavings. Page 17 Step 3 Add some dry Rose Pink Watercolour pencil to the top of the sea anemone and dampen with a waterbrush. Cover the background area of the seabed with a wash of Aquatone Raw Sienna. While still damp, add a few Dark Violet shavings, spreading them out with a damp brush and adding the same colour to the sea anemone. Wash in strong greens, blues and purples on the seaweed, leaving some areas white for highlights. Leave to dry. For further inspiration & other projects to complete, please visit the hints & tips section at
Page 18 Project: Seahorses A step-by-step demonstration using Derwent watersoluble pencils, blocks and sticks by Jenny Hill Step 4 Scribble watercolour pencils Rose Pink and Imperial Purple onto the small hillocks on the left, on the coral and the foreground. Use a waterbrush to spread the colour out. Make a strong wash with a Tangerine Inktense block and stipple this on the coral fingers and foreground. Tip: Stippling should be done with a nearly dry brush to prevent big splodges of colour. Wipe excess paint on a rag before stippling. Step 5 Make a wash of Sun Yellow using an Inktense block and another of Kingfisher Blue Aquatone stick. Wash Sun Yellow over the smaller seahorse and while still damp, add details with a Dark Aquamarine Inktense pencil. When dry, add a touch of Kingfisher Blue to the Sun Yellow wash (making turquoise) and apply this to the darker side of the seahorse. For the larger seahorse, first scribble on Kingfisher Blue Aquatone dry, leaving plenty of white highlights. For the mid-tones, add a little Sun Yellow Inktense block to the blue wash and brush this over the lower part of the face, tail and fin. Allow to dry then wash a little Sun Yellow onto the face and body. Stipple some purple over the lower foreground to add interest and add a few dots of dry Dark Aquamarine Inktense pencil to link the foreground with the background. For further inspiration & other projects to complete, please visit the hints & tips section at
Project: Seahorses A step-by-step demonstration using Derwent watersoluble pencils, blocks and sticks by Jenny Hill Step 6 Stipple strong Kingfisher Blue and Bottle Green Aquatone over the lower foreground. The strong colour will link the whole painting together. Page 19 Tip: an empty spray bottle is useful for refreshing dried up washes (of watercolour and Aquatone) or adding tiny amounts of water to a few shavings when stippling. Swirl some strokes of Light Blue Aquatone over the sandy yellow part of the seabed, carrying some over the foreground. Finally, if you have a battery eraser, lift off some colour between the seaweed and around the seahorses for highlights.
