1 Computer-Generated Watercolor By Cassidy J. Curtis, Sean E. Anderson, Joshua E. Steins, Kurt W. Fleischer and David H. Salesin SIGGRAPH 97 Aditya Bhatia Computer Science McGill University Introduction Watercolor Painting Two basic approaches to painting: 1. Low Level Simulate the characteristics of artistic medium. E.g. Watercolor simulation, gravity, fluid flow, diffusion. 2. High Level Simulates the artistic process. e.g Haeberli, Hertzman,, Gooch. A Watercolor Generated Painting Watercolor Materials Watercolor Paper linen / cotton rags. Sizing Cellulose barrier. Watercolor Materials Watercolor Paint Pigment Particles - Vary in density, staining power. Binder Enables adsorption. Surfactant - Surface active agent Water 1

2 Watercolor Effects Paper Generation Modeled as a height field using Perlin Noise. Perlin Noise = Noise Function + Interpolation function. The value of the noise function changes smoothly as you move from one point to the other -- that is, there are no discontinuities Parameters of the Simulation Wet Area Mask, M ( =1 if wet, =0 is dry) Velocity u, v of water. Pressure p of water Concentration g k of each pigment in water. Gradient of paper s height h Viscosity and Viscous drag. Shallow Water Layer Pigment Deposition Layer Capillary Layer 2

3 Shallow Water Layer Constrained Flow in Wet Area Mask. Surplus water outflows in nearby regions UpdateVelocities calculates new velocity based on SWE. RelaxDivergence redistributes the fluid into neighboring cells Flow Outward removes water from a cell depending upon its distance from boundary of M. Shallow Water Layer Pigment Deposition Layer Capillary Layer Pigment Deposition Layer At each Time Step: Pigment Adsorbed Pigment Desorbed Depends upon: Density Staining Power Granulation 3

4 Shallow Water Layer Pigment Deposition Layer Capillary Layer Capillary Layer Caused by puddle of water Absorption. Depends Upon: Absorption rate Minimum Saturation to diffuse Minimum saturation to receive Rendering Kubelka-Munk (KM) Model Absorption Coefficient K Scattering Coefficient - S Used to compute Reflectance and Transmittance. Opaque Paints Similar Color on both Black and white. Indian Red Cadmium Yellow 4
