4 2. BOOK REPAIR TRIAGE LEVELS (1-3) Book repairs are often divided into three needs or triage levels. The table below outlines triage levels for circulating books. Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Surface Cleaning Perfect binding reheat repair Rebinding case bindings; tight backbone bindings, etc. Tear Repair Signature inserts Repair textblock sewing Tip-in page repairs Spine repair - minor Reattach boards Case binding hinge tightening Repair damaged corners Reattach boards Library repair station Reattach endpapers and/or fly papers Phased box construction Remove adhesive labels Corner replacement Spine/tail repair Mendery and/or conservation lab Level 1 includes basic repairs that can be undertaken at library repair stations. Procedures for Level 1 repairs are outlined in section 3 of this booklet. Level 2 includes intermediate level repairs and/or box making. Level 2 repairs require specialized equipment, materials and a dedicated workspace. Level 3 includes advanced repairs that should be undertaken in a mendery or conservation lab. 6 3. REPAIR PROCEDURES LEVEL 1 1. Dry Clean/Surface Cleaning Mars Plastic eraser (white vinyl eraser) Soft brush 1. Pencil marks and other light surface soiling can be removed or minimized with the white vinyl eraser. 2. Always push the eraser towards the page edge in a straight line. Caution must be taken around tears so that no further damage is created. 3. Brush the eraser crumbs and dirt towards the page edge. NOTE: Ink and Highlighter marks cannot be removed. 2. Tear Repair Filmoplast tape Bone folder Scissors 1. Align tear so that the text is easily read. 2. Cut Filmoplast so that it is at least 1 cm longer than the tear. 3. Place the Filmoplast tape so that it extends 0.5 cm before the start of the tear and extends approximately 0.5 cm beyond the edge of the page. 4. Cut the excess Filmoplast from the edge of the page. 5. Use the bone folder to burnish the tape. Burnishing increases the transparency of the mend. 3. 7 White glue Filmoplast Bone Folder Scissors 1. Cut two sheets of waxed paper so that they are little larger than the size of the page to be tipped-in. 2. If the loose page has a torn or raggedy edge Filmoplast tape should be applied to the edge and smoothed in place with a bone folder. 3. If the loose page has a straight inside edge apply a thin line of white glue along the entire page length. Glue can be applied to the page edge directly with the glue brush. Alternately, glue can also be applied to the knitting needle. The glued knitting needle can then be placed at the page edge to transfer a thin straight line of glue. The line of glue should be no wider than 1/8 or 2-3 ml wide. 4. Insert the glued page so that the top and bottom of the page are correctly aligned with the textblock. Use the bone folder to lightly press the tip-in in place. 5. Insert one sheet of waxed paper behind the tip-in and one sheet on top of the tip-in. 4. Case Binding Hinge Tightening Knitting needle Waxed paper White glue Bone Folder 1. Open the book so that the cloth spine forms a hollow. 2. Apply white glue to the knitting needle. 3. Insert the knitting needle along the spine hinge. Insert the knitting needle only half way down the spine. 7

Reapply white glue to the knitting needle again and insert the knitting needle to the other half of the spine hinge. 4. Close the book. 5. Use the bone folder to gently, yet firmly, score the joints. 9 5. Repair Damaged Corners White glue Glue brush or knitting needle Waxed paper Scissors Bulldog clips 1 Gently fan the binder s board layers. 2. Cut waxed paper squares that are larger than the length of the bulldog clip. 2. Apply white glue to the knitting needle or glue brush. 3. Apply a very thin layer of white glue to as many layers of the binder s board as possible. 4. Place waxed paper on either side of the corner. 5. 10 6. Reattach Boards Coloured cloth tape Scissors 1. This should only be done for books that already have either buckram or cloth tape hinge repairs. 2. Use cloth tape on top of old cloth tape or buckram to reattach the board. 3. If the board is heavy or damaged set book aside for Level 2 repair. NOTE: Most board reattachments are a Level 2 or 3 repair. 10
